Wukong’s recorded high is over twice Cyberpunk 2077’s. The comparison is about peak concurrent activity on Steam, not which game sold more copies or attracted more players across all platforms.
Why launch-day reports cited a different number
On 20 August 2024, about 11 hours after launch, PC Gamer reported that Wukong had passed 2.1 million concurrent Steam players and overtaken Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring at that point. That was a timely snapshot while the count was still climbing, not a final record. SteamDB’s later chart records the peak two days after launch, on 22 August. What “concurrent players” does—and doesn’t—tell you
Concurrent players are the accounts playing on Steam at the same time. A peak is the highest simultaneous count recorded during a particular moment. It is different from:
- Sales: a concurrent-player count does not reveal copies sold or revenue.
- Lifetime players: it does not count every unique person who played over time.
- Total audience: Steam’s figure does not include activity on console storefronts.
Keep the metric, time window, platform and category together when comparing records. A launch-day snapshot is not the same as an eventual all-time peak; a Steam chart is not a cross-platform total; and a single-player category chart is not a ranking of every game on Steam.
