The Penitent One’s pilgrimage through Cvstodia has two original endings: he either sinks into the ash or reaches the throne and becomes an object of worship. The Wounds of Eventide route adds a third outcome, confronting the High Wills—the power sustaining the Miracle—and leading into the sequel.
What is the story of Blasphemous?
Blasphemous is set in Cvstodia, a land shaped by the Miracle, a force that brings apparent blessings as well as grotesque afflictions. The Penitent One, the sole survivor of the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow, journeys through the region in search of an end to its torment. Xbox Wire’s story recap describes him as the survivor of the Massacre of the Silent Sorrow and frames his journey as an attempt to save Cvstodia from a fate worse than death.

The story is delivered in fragments through places, encounters and item descriptions rather than a single, straightforward explanation. The base game follows the Penitent One’s pilgrimage and climb through ash; the Wounds of Eventide route later reveals more about the force behind the religious order he encounters.
What happens in the two original endings?
The base game has two original outcomes. Both conclude the Penitent One’s ascent within Cvstodia’s existing religious order; neither includes the later confrontation with the force behind the Miracle.

| Ending | What the Penitent One does | Outcome | Does it confront the Miracle’s underlying power? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default outcome | He does not complete the optional confessor-dungeon path and its thorn transformation. | He fails to reach the summit and sinks into the ash. | No. |
| Throne outcome | He completes the optional confessor-dungeon path and transforms Deogracias’s thorn to its final form. | He reaches the throne, stabs himself with Mea Culpa and becomes a tree-like object of worship. | No. |
Players often call these the “bad” and “good” endings, respectively, but those labels are shorthand, not full explanations. Both are grim conclusions inside the established order. The later DLC changes the larger context by revealing what sustains that order.
What is the Wounds of Eventide ending?
Wounds of Eventide adds a third major route, commonly called Ending C or the true ending. On this route, the Penitent One learns about the fourth visage, works with Crisanta and enters the Dream to confront the High Wills.
Rank #2
- Overcome fearsome enemies and deadly traps as you venture through a variety of different landscapes, and search for redemption in the dark gothic world of Cvstodia
- Release the power of Mea Culpa, a sword born from guilt itself, to slaughter your foes. Acquire devastating new combos and special moves as you purge all in your path
- Unleash your wrath and relish in the gory dismemberment of your adversaries - all in beautifully rendered, pixel-perfect execution animations
- Hordes of gigantic, twisted creatures stand between you and your goal. Learn how they move, survive their devastating attacks and emerge victorious
- The Deluxe Edition also includes the 'Alloy of Sin' And 'Golden Burden' Skins, digital soundtrack, digital artbook, digital comic, stickersheet and poster of Cvstodia
The High Wills are presented as a divine trinity that draws power from Cvstodia’s reverence and worship through the Miracle. The Penitent One and Crisanta destroy them, ending the Miracle’s control. This revelation identifies the power sustaining the system; it does not establish that the High Wills directly planned every event or affliction in Cvstodia.
The ending depicts the Penitent One’s death. Its post-credits image introduces a new event but does not explain it. It is best understood as a sequel hook, not as a mystery with a confirmed answer in the available story recaps.

How does the ending connect to Blasphemous 2?
Blasphemous 2 follows the lead-in from Wounds of Eventide, rather than treating the base game’s two original endings as the complete setup. In Xbox Wire’s August 2023 recap, the Heart in the sky heralds the Miracle’s return and foretells the birth of a new miracle child. The sequel then reawakens the Penitent One and sends him into another cycle of life, death and resurrection. For the narrative bridge into the sequel, Ending C is the relevant route.
What do the imagery and themes mean?
Blasphemous draws on Catholic iconography, Spanish Holy Week traditions and baroque visual language. These influences shape its imagery; they do not, by themselves, prove that the game is a one-to-one allegory for a particular religious institution or doctrine.
Guilt, faith, penance and institutional power are useful ways to interpret the story’s conflicts. The game leaves much of its world and history fragmentary, so these are readings supported by its imagery and events, not a single definitive explanation of every symbol.
