The clearest takeaway is that it is a colorful, exploration-heavy 2D Metroidvania with responsive-feeling shooting and platforming, but some sections and bosses can spike in difficulty. MeriStation’s 2022 review was positive about its controls, exploration, and presentation while flagging those difficulty bumps, a predictable story, and characters who feel less distinct as abilities accumulate. Here’s what that means for players, plus where the game is listed.
What kind of game is Blast Brigade?
Steam describes Blast Brigade as a 2D Metroidvania inspired by 1980s action films. Its core loop combines platforming, shooting, puzzle solving, exploration, and backtracking: new weapons and abilities open routes through a connected world. The official description also says players can switch among four characters, each with unique abilities, and advertises a story campaign of more than 20 hours with fully voice-acted cutscenes. That duration is the publisher’s scope claim, not an independently measured playtime.
The game’s cartoon presentation and action-film tone are part of its identity, but the structure is familiar to Metroidvania players: explore, encounter routes you cannot yet access, gain abilities, and revisit earlier areas with more options.
What do reviews say about its strengths and weaknesses?
In a review published May 13, 2022, MeriStation’s Cristian Ciuraneta Catalán called the game an entertaining, polished Metroidvania. He praised its movement and shooting, exploration, cartoon art, and the scale of the adventure. In particular, he found the dual-stick shooting, jumping, and movement responsive-feeling.

Combat and movement
The positive assessment is most relevant if you want a platformer that mixes aiming and traversal rather than focusing on one combat style. The review’s praise is an individual critic’s impression, not a guarantee that every player will find the controls equally satisfying.
Exploration and progression
Exploration and backtracking are central rather than incidental. Players who enjoy mapping a connected world and returning to blocked paths as their toolkit grows are likely to find the structure appealing.

Difficulty and character variety
Ciuraneta Catalán also reported frustrating difficulty spikes in some sections and boss fights. He found that the four characters became less distinct in practice once many abilities had been unlocked. That criticism matters if you are choosing the game mainly for sharply different character playstyles or consistently even challenge.
Story and tone
The 1980s action-film influence gives the adventure a playful, cartoon presentation, but the reviewer considered the central story predictable. The official listing advertises voice-acted cutscenes; that is a presentation feature, not evidence that the plot itself is especially surprising.

Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Consider it if you like 2D action-adventures built around exploration, ability-gated routes, platforming, and returning to earlier areas.
- It may be a weaker fit if you strongly dislike sudden boss or section difficulty increases, need each playable character to remain mechanically distinct throughout, or prioritize an unpredictable story.
- For a comparison with another Metroidvania, focus on combat and aiming, map exploration and backtracking, boss demands, character differentiation, advertised campaign scope, and tone. The available evidence does not support ranking this game against a specific competitor.
