In its October 7, 2026 announcement, Blizzard named the High Definition (HD) Skyborne Druid forms as one example. It describes less softness, more detailed fur textures and adjusted color saturation. It also agreed that HD Skyborne characters can look jarring beside Standard Definition (SD) models and the SD world, and said Skyborne SD player characters and SD Druid forms are in development for early 2027. The “look worse” wording in the headline comes from PC Gamer’s reporting, not from Blizzard.
What Blizzard is changing
HD Skyborne Druid forms
Blizzard’s official post, titled “World of Warcraft: Forever – The Future of Skyborne Visual Updates,” uses the HD Skyborne Druid forms as its main example of a revision. According to Blizzard Entertainment, the team made three adjustments:
- Less softness: Blizzard says it “removed a bit of the softness” from the forms.
- More detailed fur: the forms gained “more detailed fur textures.”
- Adjusted saturation: the team “adjusted the color saturation.”
The stated reason is fit rather than polish. Blizzard wants the Skyborne to reflect their exotic environment without clashing with the visual language of other creatures in the game.
The SD option
Blizzard had initially built the SD/HD toggle around races from original World of Warcraft. After feedback, it changed course. The post says the team heard that HD Skyborne characters “can be jarring by contrast when placed in the same world as the SD models and world, and we agree.” The practical result is that SD versions of Skyborne player characters and Druid forms are being developed alongside the HD versions, not treated as an afterthought.

Why Blizzard says it is doing this
Blizzard frames the work around two commitments. The first is the core aesthetic: “Our aim has always been to uphold the original WoW era aesthetic, while giving players more choice in how they experience Azeroth.” The second is consistency. Blizzard acknowledges that “some ideas the team wanted to explore ultimately didn’t quite meet the consistency and cohesion we are aiming for,” and says it is revisiting some visuals as a result.
Read together, the two commitments explain the choice of HD and SD options. Players keep a way to see the game in the presentation Blizzard considers original-era, while the Skyborne stop looking like outliers in the world around them.
Timing and status by version
Blizzard’s announcement separates the HD revisions from the SD work. Only the SD items carry a target window.

| Version and form | What Blizzard describes | Status in the announcement | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| HD Skyborne Druid forms | Less softness, more detailed fur textures, adjusted color saturation | Revised visuals described as part of the update | No date given in the announcement |
| SD Skyborne player characters | Standard Definition option for Skyborne player characters | In development | Expected early 2027; no exact day stated |
| SD Skyborne Druid forms | Standard Definition Druid forms | In development | Expected early 2027; no exact day stated |
Because the SD items are still in development, the early 2027 window should be read as a target. Blizzard does not say that the SD work is finished, and it does not give a release date for the HD Druid revisions.

Where “look worse” comes from
The headline, “Blizzard promises to make the blue elves in World of Warcraft: Forever look worse (positive),” was written by Tyler Colp for PC Gamer and published October 7, 2026. The “worse” and “(positive)” wording is the outlet’s editorial framing. Blizzard’s own explanation centers on consistency and cohesion, not on the models looking less refined.
PC Gamer’s report adds context that Blizzard’s post does not provide. It describes the Skyborne as a new faction of High Elves and compares their appearance to the Blood Elves of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. It also reports that players criticized how polished the new models looked next to older models. These points are PC Gamer’s reporting and interpretation, not statements from Blizzard.
