PC Gamer’s October 7, 2026 staff poll reported unread inbox counts ranging from 0 to 76,547. It is a collection of individual snapshots and stories about email habits, not a representative survey—and the article’s author says the numbers should not be a source of shame.
What did PC Gamer staff report?
The counts below are the figures shown for individual staff members in PC Gamer’s October 7, 2026 article. They are not standardized: the contributors describe different inboxes, habits and ways of counting unread mail.
| Staff member | Reported unread count | Context they gave |
|---|---|---|
| Christopher Livingston | 780 | He described it as a personal improvement after setting filters and unsubscribing. |
| Kara Phillips | 4,854 | She opens important messages and lets much other mail accumulate. |
| Evan Lahti | 38,523 | He pointed to a long work history and old correspondence. |
| Sean Martin | 5,488 | He cited corporate notifications and press lists. |
| Phil Savage | 18 | He uses unread mail as an informal to-do list. |
| Joshua Wolens | 760 displayed | He said he marks everything read when the displayed total reaches 1,000, so his actual unread messages are likely much higher. |
| Andy Chalk | 49,925 | He attributed the volume to his job and criticized the Gmail web client. |
| Jody MacGregor | 45,664 | She mentioned duplicate press releases and a period when ADHD-related difficulty affected her inbox. That is her personal account, not a general claim about ADHD. |
| Robert Jones | 17 | He said he normally aims for zero unread messages. |
| Ted Litchfield | 5 in his work inbox | The article does not disclose his personal inbox count. |
| Jacob Ridley | 39,608 | He said he reads useful messages and ignores the rest. |
| Tim Clark | 37,332 | No additional context for this count is included here. |
| Lauren Morton | 0 at the time reported | She said the count fluctuates from zero to more than 50 during a day. |
| Fraser Brown | 76,547 | No additional context for this count is included here. |
PC Gamer’s article also reports Livingston’s estimate that he received roughly 50,000 emails over 2026, 56 in an eight-hour overnight-to-morning interval, and had 284 filters. Those are his own estimates and figures, not a measured email rate for other people.
Why the counts are not directly comparable
An unread total is only a snapshot of what a particular inbox marks unread. The article’s examples show why a single number does not mean the same thing for everyone: some contributors prioritize important mail while leaving other messages untouched; one uses unread status as a reminder; another periodically marks messages read to keep the displayed total below a threshold. Ted’s figure is specifically for his work inbox, while Joshua distinguishes the displayed number from the larger amount of mail he believes is actually unread.

- Setting filters and unsubscribing from unwanted lists.
- Opening important messages while allowing other mail to accumulate.
- Keeping unread messages as a to-do reminder.
- Marking messages read in bulk when the displayed count reaches a chosen point.
- Skimming subject lines or filing press releases for later searching.
Jacob Ridley summed up his approach with, “I read the good ones, I ignore the rest. Life is too short.” Tim Clark’s “I will never know the light of God’s grace again” is staff humor, not a serious measure of inbox distress.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a large unread count mean you should feel ashamed?
No conclusion about competence or wellbeing follows from these figures. Livingston acknowledges the story’s shame-inducing framing, then writes: “Despite my headline up there, it really shouldn’t be a source of stress and shame. It’s not your fault email turned out this way.” The poll’s point is the variety of staff inboxes and habits—not a standard readers are expected to meet.
