The Blood Mage is a Human hero in Warcraft III, tied to the Blood Elves and their dangerous pursuit of magical power. Blizzard’s Warcraft III: Reforged art article labels Kael’thas Sunstrider “(Blood Mage)” and describes the Blood Mages as refugees seeking to increase their remaining magical powers at any cost, with passions that bring them close to madness.

Blizzard’s legacy Warcraft III hero page describes the Blood Mage as “A mystical Hero, adept at controlling magic and ranged assaults.” That is the page’s broad character framing, rather than a current assessment of competitive strength. Blizzard also says later World of Warcraft characterization influenced the Reforged art team’s reconstruction of the hero’s appearance.
What does the Blood Mage do in Warcraft III?
The The Frozen Throne manual names four abilities. Together, they let the hero damage groups of ground units, interfere with a target’s ability to fight, drain an enemy’s mana and summon a fiery flyer.

Flame Strike
Flame Strike creates a pillar of fire that damages ground units in an area. The manual describes both an initial burst and continuing damage, making it the Blood Mage’s area-damage spell.
Banish
Banish makes a target ethereal and slows it. An ethereal unit cannot attack but can still cast spells; the manual also notes that certain spells affect ethereal creatures more strongly. It is therefore a form of disruption, not simply a way to remove a unit from play.

Siphon Mana
Siphon Mana is a channeling spell that drains an enemy’s mana over time. Its purpose is resource pressure rather than direct damage.
Phoenix
Phoenix summons a powerful flying unit made of flame. The manual notes that the Phoenix damages itself as well as nearby enemies, so its presence comes with ongoing self-damage.

To compare the Blood Mage with other Human heroes, evaluate each hero’s role, abilities, timing and resource demands in the game version you play. The Blood Mage’s documented identity is magic control and ranged pressure, but that description alone is not enough to determine which hero is strongest in a given matchup.
