Bloodborne is a PS4 game that PlayStation says is playable on PS5; the cited product page does not identify a separate native PS5 edition. A digital license can be downloaded on a compatible console, while a PS4 disc works only on a PS5 with a disc drive and must stay inserted during play. PS5 Digital Edition requires a digital license. PlayStation Plus is not listed as necessary for offline single-player, but the US listing says it is required for online play.
Can you play Bloodborne on PS4 and PS5?
Yes. PlayStation lists Bloodborne as a PS4 title and says it is playable on PS5. Its game page cautions: “Although this game is playable on PS5, some features available on PS4 may be absent.” PlayStation does not specify which features may be absent, nor does the cited listing establish a native PS5 edition or particular PS5 resolution, frame rate, or enhancement. See the Bloodborne product page.

PlayStation’s broader compatibility guidance says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, while noting that functionality can differ. That broad figure is not a Bloodborne-specific performance or compatibility measurement; the game-specific statement is the relevant one here. Read PlayStation’s PS4-to-PS5 backward-compatibility guidance.

How to download Bloodborne
If you own the digital game
- Sign in on the PS4 or PS5 with the PlayStation account that owns the digital license.
- Open your game library or the PlayStation Store on the console and locate Bloodborne. On PS5, choose the PS4 game listing; the cited PlayStation product information identifies Bloodborne as a PS4 title.
- Select the download option and let the game install. On PS5, follow any update prompt shown by the console.
On PS5 Digital Edition, a compatible digital PS4 game is the applicable way to play; a physical disc cannot substitute for a digital license. PlayStation confirms digital PS4 game compatibility in its PS5 FAQ.
#1 Best Overall
- Bloodborne Game of The Year
- If Bloodborne needs to be summed up, then the prevalent themes would be: exploring the fearsome unknown, intense life-and-death battles, and a familiar yet uniquely new online experience
- From the makers of the infamous Souls series, From Software's PS4 exclusive will attempt to take the tried and tested formula of giving players a sense of achievement to the next stage - especially when Miyazaki, the original creator of the Souls series is back at the helm
- What is promised is a harrowing experience like no other, and fans of tension, discovery, and straight up fun will sure to be excited to play Bloodborne
- If you have played the previous Souls games, then this one is a definite must buy
If you have a PS4 disc
- Check that the PS5 has a disc drive. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read the disc.
- Insert the Bloodborne PS4 disc and install the game. Download an update if the console prompts you to do so.
- Leave the disc in the console whenever you launch and play the game; the disc is needed to verify access.
These disc requirements follow PlayStation’s backward-compatibility instructions.
Does Bloodborne require PlayStation Plus?
PlayStation’s US Store listing marks online play as optional and says PS Plus is required for online play. It lists support for up to five online players with PS Plus. That supports playing the offline single-player game without a Plus membership; it does not make online features available without the required membership. Store labels and terms may differ by region; check the listing for your account’s storefront.

- Bloodborne - Game Of The Year Edition [PS4]
The same US listing currently advertises Bloodborne through the PlayStation Plus Extra Game Catalog. Catalog access is not the same as owning the game: it depends on the title being in your region’s catalog and on having an eligible membership. PlayStation explains how to browse and download eligible catalog games on PS4 and PS5. Its general guidance says streaming requires broadband of at least 5 Mbps; that is a general PlayStation Plus streaming requirement, not a Bloodborne-specific speed or performance guarantee.

The cited US PlayStation Store listing showed a standard digital price of $19.99 in a search result observed on October 7, 2026. That is a time- and region-specific listing, not a permanent or worldwide price; the live store may show a different price, promotion, or availability. Check your local PlayStation Store listing before buying. Catalog inclusion can also change, so confirm it in the local PlayStation Plus catalog rather than relying on an older listing.
