Bloodflame Blade is one of Elden Ring’s most useful early weapon-buff incantations for fast bleed weapons. It adds a modest amount of fire damage based on your seal’s Faith scaling, then applies a delayed 40-point Blood Loss effect over two seconds whenever the buffed right-hand weapon connects. Its fixed bloodflame buildup does not scale with Arcane, so the spell is strongest when you can land repeated hits with a weapon that already causes Bleed.
You can obtain it from an invisible Teardrop Scarab northwest of Rose Church in Liurnia of the Lakes. The spell requires only 12 Faith and 10 Arcane, lasts 60 seconds, costs 20 FP and 10 stamina, and uses one memory slot.

What Bloodflame Blade does
Bloodflame Blade is a Blood Oath incantation granted by the Lord of Blood. When cast, it coats the weapon held in your right hand with bloodflame. You can cast it while moving, making it practical to apply before entering a fight without having to stand still.

The buff has two separate effects:
- Fire damage: Adds fire attack power equal to 40% of the casting Sacred Seal’s Faith-based incantation scaling.
- Delayed bloodflame: A successful hit applies 40 Blood Loss buildup over two seconds, equivalent to 20 buildup per second.
The second effect is Bloodflame Blade’s real selling point. It is not simply a weaker fire coating. Every connecting hit can add another delayed bloodflame instance, allowing quick attacks and multi-hit skills to build considerable Bleed pressure while the target remains in contact range.

Bloodflame Blade requirements and duration
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Type | Blood Oath incantation |
| Requirements | 12 Faith, 10 Arcane |
| FP cost | 20 FP |
| Stamina cost | 10 stamina |
| Memory slots | 1 |
| Base duration | 60 seconds |
| Weapon affected | Buffable right-hand armament |
| Added status effect | 40 Blood Loss buildup over two seconds per successful hit |
The low stat requirements make Bloodflame Blade accessible to many characters. A Strength, Dexterity, Faith, or Arcane build can usually reach the requirements without heavily changing its planned progression. The one-slot cost is also modest, although a player with very limited FP may prefer a grease instead.
Bloodflame Blade location: northwest of Rose Church
Bloodflame Blade is a guaranteed drop from an invisible Teardrop Scarab in Liurnia of the Lakes, northwest of Rose Church. Rose Church is the important navigation landmark; you do not need to search for a conventional enemy camp or a visible spell merchant.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Travel to Rose Church in Liurnia of the Lakes.
- Explore the area northwest of the church.
- Look and listen for the invisible Teardrop Scarab’s movement trail.
- Watch the glowing footprints and follow the route the scarab travels.
- Attack the scarab’s path rather than trying to hit a visible creature.
- Time your attack to intersect the trail. Once defeated, the scarab drops Bloodflame Blade.
The scarab is invisible, but its movement is not. Its visible trail is the key to the encounter. If you swing randomly after the trail has passed, you will usually miss; instead, predict where the next footprints will appear and attack as the scarab reaches that point.
For players who want a broader reference while exploring Liurnia, the Elden Ring official strategy guide Volume I is an optional map-and-quest resource. It is not required to obtain the incantation, and the scarab can be found without it.
How Bloodflame Blade scales
Faith increases the added fire damage
The fire component is calculated from 40% of the casting seal’s Faith-based incantation scaling. Raising Faith, or using a seal with stronger Faith-based scaling, increases the fire damage added by the buff.
This does not mean Bloodflame Blade turns into a major fire-damage spell at high Faith. Its fire contribution is generally the secondary benefit. The spell’s practical value comes from adding another source of Bleed buildup to repeated weapon hits.

Arcane does not increase the fixed bloodflame buildup
Arcane is required to memorize and cast Bloodflame Blade, but it does not increase the spell’s fixed 40-point bloodflame contribution. The same applies to the weapon’s Arcane scaling and the use of the Dragon Communion Seal: they do not make each Bloodflame Blade application larger.

This creates an important distinction for Faith/Arcane builds:
- Faith improves the added fire damage through the casting seal.
- Arcane lets you meet the spell’s requirement and may improve other parts of a bleed-oriented build, but it does not increase Bloodflame Blade’s fixed 40-point status application.
- Repeated successful hits are what allow the spell’s bloodflame effect to produce more total pressure.
There is no universally best seal for every Bloodflame Blade build. The correct choice depends on your Faith, other stats, spell selection, and whether you care more about this buff’s fire damage or the rest of your incantations. Avoid choosing a seal solely because it has Arcane scaling: that scaling does not increase the spell’s fixed bloodflame buildup.
Best weapons for Bloodflame Blade
The ideal weapon has three qualities:
- It can receive weapon buffs.
- It already has innate Blood Loss buildup, or attacks quickly enough to exploit the delayed effect.
- Its moveset or skill can land several hits reliably.
Good weapon categories to investigate include:
- Katanas: Reliable reach and frequent access to innate Blood Loss.
- Curved swords: Fast attacks and strong running or jumping attack options.
- Claws and fists: Very rapid hit sequences at close range.
- Twinblades: Multi-hit attacks can repeatedly apply the bloodflame effect.
- Other quick buffable weapons: A weapon does not need to be a traditional bleed weapon if its attack speed lets it produce repeated applications.
Always verify the exact weapon’s buff eligibility before committing to a build. A weapon’s damage type, affinity, Ash of War, upgrade path, and unique properties can affect whether external weapon buffs are allowed.

Bloodflame Blade becomes more valuable when paired with skills that connect several times. Each successful hit can create another delayed bloodflame application, so a multi-hit skill can stack substantial additional pressure faster than a single attack.
Examples identified as useful pairings include:
- Spinning Gravity Thrust
- Repeating Thrust
- Double Slash
- Savage Claws
- Charge Forth
- Blood Tax
These are examples, not a guarantee that every use will produce the same result. Range, enemy movement, poise, hit confirmation, and the skill’s current behavior all matter. The best pairing is the one that lets you land repeated contact safely and consistently.
Weapons with innate Blood Loss are particularly attractive because their normal buildup works alongside Bloodflame Blade’s additional fixed contribution. The spell does not replace the weapon’s own status effect; it adds another source of pressure to it.
Which weapons cannot use Bloodflame Blade?
Bloodflame Blade is not a universal coating. It is intended for a buffable right-hand armament, and many weapons cannot receive external weapon buffs because of their affinity, unique skill, damage type, or upgrade restrictions.

As a practical rule, check the weapon before building around the spell. A weapon that uses a special upgrade path or has a fixed unique skill may be unable to accept the incantation. Do not assume that every weapon upgraded with Somber Smithing Stones is excluded, either: Varre’s Bouquet is a documented exception that can receive Bloodflame Blade despite using Somber Smithing Stones. That exception should not be generalized to all Somber weapons.
If the incantation icon is unavailable when you try to cast it, confirm that:
- The intended weapon is in your right hand.
- The weapon is a valid buff target.
- The weapon is not using a restricted affinity or skill.
- You have the required 12 Faith and 10 Arcane.
- You have enough FP and a Sacred Seal equipped.
Useful Bloodflame Blade synergies
Fire-damage bonuses
Several effects can improve the fire-damage portion of the buff:
- Fire Scorpion Charm
- Flame, Grant Me Strength
- Flame-Shrouding Cracked Tear
These increase the value of the added fire component, but they do not change the basic fixed 40-point bloodflame application. They are therefore most attractive when the rest of your setup also deals meaningful fire damage.
Bleed-triggered damage bonuses
Lord of Blood’s Exultation and the White Mask are natural companions for a bleed-oriented setup. Their benefit activates after nearby Blood Loss, so they complement a weapon that can trigger Bleed through its own buildup plus Bloodflame Blade’s additional applications.
These items are synergies, not mandatory equipment. If your build does not trigger Blood Loss frequently, or if the fight does not allow sustained contact, their value may be lower than a more generally useful talisman or headpiece.
Extending the duration
Old Lord’s Talisman extends the spell’s documented 60-second duration by 30%, producing a duration of 78 seconds. This is convenient for exploration and longer encounters, but it is not essential. In many fights, the limiting factor is reaching the target and maintaining contact—not the base duration.

Bloodflame Blade versus Blood Grease
Blood Grease and Drawstring Blood Grease are the closest consumable alternatives. The choice depends on your build and how often you need the coating.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Bloodflame Blade | Blood Grease or Drawstring Blood Grease |
|---|---|
| Requires 12 Faith and 10 Arcane | No spell-stat requirement |
| Uses one memory slot | Does not use a memory slot |
| Costs 20 FP per cast | Does not consume FP |
| Lasts 60 seconds by default | Useful when you want a consumable coating instead |
| Can be reapplied whenever you have FP and a seal | Limited by your supply of grease |
Choose grease if your build cannot spare the requirements, you want to preserve a memory slot, or you do not want to spend FP on weapon buffs. Choose Bloodflame Blade if you frequently use a buffable bleed weapon and want a repeatable 60-second coating.
Patch-history warning: do not rely on old projectile claims
Older Bloodflame Blade discussions often describe interactions with projectile, wind, or other non-contact weapon skills. Those claims should not be treated as universal current strategies.
Bandai Namco’s official Version 1.12 patch notes documented a fix for a bug that caused Bloodflame Blade’s bleed buildup to trigger with Spinning Strikes even when the attack did not hit an enemy. The current behavior should therefore be evaluated around actual weapon contact, not assumed projectile or no-hit applications.
A separate pre-1.09 behavior allowed a percentage-based burn effect to pass through certain projectile-based weapon skills. That was tied to an earlier game state and should be treated as historical, not as a current recommendation.
When should you use Bloodflame Blade?
Use it when:
- You use a fast, buffable right-hand weapon.
- The weapon already has innate Blood Loss or can land many hits quickly.
- You can maintain close-range contact with the target.
- Your build can comfortably meet 12 Faith and 10 Arcane.
- You want repeatable bleed pressure rather than a one-hit damage boost.
Consider skipping it when:
- Your main weapon is slow and rarely lands repeated hits.
- Your weapon cannot receive external buffs.
- You cannot reliably stay in melee range.
- You have no spare memory slot or FP.
- You are using a build that gains little from either fire damage or Blood Loss.
Practical build guidance
For a Faith/Arcane bleed build, Bloodflame Blade is easy to slot into the early and midgame. Meet the minimum requirements first, then decide whether additional Faith is worthwhile for the spell’s fire damage and your other incantations. Do not raise Arcane expecting the spell’s 40-point bloodflame application to increase.
For a pure bleed build that only wants the buff, the 10 Arcane requirement is modest, while the 12 Faith requirement is the more unusual investment. Whether that trade is worthwhile depends on your weapon, FP pool, available memory slots, and access to blood-grease alternatives.

For a fire-focused Faith build, Bloodflame Blade can add useful supplemental pressure, but it should not be mistaken for a primary fire-damage solution. The fire component scales from the casting seal, while the strongest status benefit still comes from repeated hits and compatible weapon choice.
Quick verdict
Bloodflame Blade is excellent for a fast, buffable weapon—especially one with innate Blood Loss—and much less compelling for slow weapons or builds that cannot maintain contact. Its requirements are low, its location is available relatively early in Liurnia, and its 60-second duration makes it convenient to use repeatedly.
Build around the spell’s actual identity: Faith supplies the fire-damage scaling, Arcane supplies a requirement rather than stronger bloodflame buildup, and rapid successful hits create the largest practical payoff.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you get Bloodflame Blade in Elden Ring?
Defeat the invisible Teardrop Scarab northwest of Rose Church in Liurnia of the Lakes. Follow the scarab’s visible movement trail and attack its route to hit it.
Does Arcane increase Bloodflame Blade’s bleed buildup?
No. Arcane is required to cast the incantation, but its bloodflame contribution is fixed at 40 Blood Loss buildup over two seconds per successful hit. Faith increases the added fire damage through the casting seal’s Faith-based incantation scaling.
How long does Bloodflame Blade last?
It lasts 60 seconds by default. Old Lord’s Talisman extends the documented duration by 30%, resulting in 78 seconds.
Can Bloodflame Blade buff Somber weapons?
Most weapons with restrictions, unique skills, or special affinities cannot receive ordinary weapon buffs, but Varre’s Bouquet is a documented exception: it can receive Bloodflame Blade despite being upgraded with Somber Smithing Stones. Do not assume every Somber weapon is compatible.
Is Bloodflame Blade better than Blood Grease?
Neither is universally better. Bloodflame Blade is repeatable and lasts 60 seconds, but it requires 12 Faith, 10 Arcane, a memory slot, and FP. Blood Grease avoids those requirements but is limited by your consumable supply.
The Bottom Line
Bloodflame Blade is a low-requirement, repeat-hit bleed buff—not a universal fire coating. Use it on a buffable fast weapon, preferably one with innate Blood Loss, and take advantage of multi-hit attacks. Faith improves its fire damage, while the fixed bloodflame buildup rewards accuracy and sustained contact rather than extra Arcane.
