Start by identifying which symptom you have, then work through these eight checks. Ninja Kiwi specifically documents firewall, DNS-filtering, and co-op version issues; Steam’s networking advice is general guidance, not a BTD6-specific diagnosis.
First, identify what “lag” looks like
Separate local performance trouble from connection trouble before changing settings. Steam recommends checking game performance before following its network-latency advice.
- Stuttering or freezing: the picture itself pauses or runs unevenly. Check the PC requirements and local performance.
- Delayed actions: clicks or in-game events appear late, or the game seems to wait on other players. Check co-op compatibility and network access.
- Disconnects: the session drops or reports a connection problem. Check firewall, DNS filtering, and network conditions.
- “Game Types Not Compatible”: treat this as a compatibility issue, not ordinary lag.
These symptoms can overlap, so note exactly what happens and whether other players in the session experience it too.
Try these eight checks in order
1. Check that every player has the latest game version
Have everyone install the latest available Bloons TD 6 update from the official store or platform they use. Ninja Kiwi says players on different versions may see “Game Types Not Compatible.” Its guidance also says unofficial copies or modified saves or executables can cause compatibility problems; use an official copy with unmodified game files rather than deleting save data or making unsupported changes. If the error remains after updating, contact Ninja Kiwi and include both players’ user IDs. Ninja Kiwi’s compatibility guidance is dated March 10, 2020.

2. Allow the game executable through your firewall
Ninja Kiwi says network-access errors commonly happen when its domains are blocked by firewalls, parental controls, or DNS-level filtering. Use your firewall’s normal controls to allow the BTD6 game executable. A Ninja Kiwi webpage opening in your browser does not establish that the game itself is permitted through the firewall. The exact menus differ by firewall and platform, so use the controls for the security software installed on your PC. Ninja Kiwi’s network troubleshooting article was updated May 28, 2024.
3. Check DNS filtering and parental controls
Check whether parental controls, a DNS filter, or network security software blocks Ninja Kiwi domains. The support article names ninjakiwi.com and nkstatic.com, along with API and assets domains used by its games. Follow Ninja Kiwi’s current domain guidance when checking or requesting an allow-list change. On a school or university network, ask its administrator whether access is blocked; do not try to bypass institutional controls.

4. Compare your PC with Steam’s listed requirements
For the Steam version on Windows, Steam lists these requirements on its Bloons TD 6 store page, checked October 8, 2026. They are a baseline, not a guarantee of smooth play:

These are Steam’s published Windows values, not an independent performance test. If the game is stuttering, close unusually demanding apps and downloads, then see whether performance changes. Check Steam’s Bloons TD 6 listing for the current requirements and platform details.

5. Check whether the problem follows one player or the whole co-op session
Ask your co-op partners whether they see the same delay, stuttering, or disconnect. If only your PC has visual stutters, focus first on its performance. If several players experience delayed actions or a disconnect together, record that detail for support and continue checking connection access. This comparison helps narrow the symptom; it does not by itself identify a server-side cause.
6. Reduce competing network activity and test another connection
Pause large downloads or other heavy network use, then check whether co-op behaves differently. If another stable connection is available, test it briefly. Steam’s general lag guidance notes that connection speed, distance to a server, and router operation can affect latency. It does not establish a BTD6-specific server selector or a guaranteed latency fix. Steam’s general troubleshooting advice provides the broader network context.

7. If you use Wi-Fi, try Ethernet as a diagnostic
If your PC is on Wi-Fi, a temporary wired Ethernet test can help show whether wireless instability is involved. It is an optional comparison, not a guaranteed fix; it will not resolve a version mismatch or a blocked game connection. If Ethernet is impractical, compare co-op behavior from a different location or connection only where permitted.

- Which platform or store each player uses and the game version shown.
- Whether the symptom is stuttering, delayed actions, a disconnect, or a compatibility message.
- Whether it affects one player or everyone in the co-op session.
- When it happens and which checks you have already tried.
- Both players’ user IDs if you are reporting “Game Types Not Compatible.”
What these checks can—and cannot—tell you
Ninja Kiwi documents domain blocking as a common reason for network-access errors and lists version differences, unofficial copies, and modified files as possible causes of the co-op compatibility message. Steam’s system requirements can help identify a PC that falls below the listed baseline, while its network page gives general—not BTD6-specific—latency context. If the symptoms persist after these checks, the available guidance does not establish whether the cause is a particular server issue, a game defect, or a local network problem; Ninja Kiwi support is the appropriate next step.
