Bone Pits: What They Are and Why They Were Used

“Bone pit” is a context-dependent term for several kinds of human-remains deposits. Location, chronology, archaeological evidence, and historical context determine how a particular site should be interpreted.

A “bone pit” is not one universally defined kind of burial. The term has been used for communal ossuaries, cemetery spaces where disinterred remains were gathered, and deposits associated with people killed in conflict. To interpret one, you need its location, period, archaeological evidence, and historical context—not just the word “pit.”

What does “bone pit” mean?

In historical and archaeological writing, “bone pit” can refer to different deposits of human remains. It may describe a communal ossuary, a place where remains were moved after an earlier burial, or bones gathered and buried after a violent event. These uses are related by the presence of collected remains, but they do not establish a single burial custom or purpose.

One scholarly account of colonial-era island cemeteries uses terms including “bone piles,” “osarios,” “bone pits,” and “bone valleys” for designated repositories of disinterred human skeletons. Other sources use “bone pit” in discussions of North American ossuaries and battlefield deposits.

Three contexts that can be called bone pits

Context Place and period What the deposit may represent
Communal ossuaries Historical accounts of sites in Jefferson County, New York, and parts of Canada and south of the Great Lakes Multiple human remains collected or buried communally. One early archaeology text interpreted some deposits as associated with collective burial after deaths over a period of years; this is that author’s historical interpretation, not a rule for all sites.
Cemetery boneyards Caribbean and Pacific island territories that became US territories after 1898 Remains disinterred after a period of years to make room for later burials, then gathered in designated spaces, sometimes in an open pit and sometimes above ground.
Conflict-related deposits Oberesch, in the Erfurt area of Germany; interpreted in relation to the AD 9 battle Human remains and pits understood alongside evidence and historical records concerning the burial of people killed in the conflict.

Communal ossuaries in North America

An Ontario Archaeology study reviews nineteenth-century descriptions of ossuaries in Jefferson County, New York. Earlier accounts described pits containing multiple human skeletons and used “bone pits” for deposits in the region. Those descriptions and any estimates they report belong to the specific sites and historical authors being discussed; they are not a representative count for bone pits generally.

An early text, Introduction to the Study of North American Archaeology, describes ossuary burial or “bone-pits” in parts of Canada and south of the Great Lakes. Its author proposed that some were associated with communal burial of people who had died over a span of years, in a ceremony called the Great Feast of the Dead. That account is a historical interpretation, not a universal description of Indigenous practice or a conclusion that can be applied to every ossuary.

Cemetery boneyards in Caribbean and Pacific island territories

In the cemetery context, a bone pit could be part of a cycle of burial and later disinterment. A scholarly chapter by Krystle Stricklin describes designated boneyard spaces where disinterred, disarticulated remains were gathered, either above ground or in an open pit. In the island territories discussed, remains could be moved after a period of years so cemetery land could be used for later burials.

The chapter also examines photographs of these repositories after 1898. Images circulated as souvenirs and in books, magazines, newspapers, stereographs, and postcards. Stricklin places that circulation within the colonial history of the islands and the treatment of the dead; the photographs should therefore be understood not just as records of burial spaces, but as objects made and distributed in a particular historical context.

Bone deposits associated with conflict

The University of Leipzig’s account of a mass grave near Erfurt describes isolated human remains and pits containing bones. It relates interpretation of the remains to historical records about the burial of people killed in the AD 9 battle. In this setting, a deposit may reflect the events of conflict and the subsequent handling and burial of the dead, rather than a customary communal ossuary or a cemetery’s periodic management of remains.

The Oberesch example illustrates why archaeological remains are interpreted alongside written accounts and other evidence. It is an example of a site-specific method, not a template that determines the meaning of every bone deposit.

How to interpret a particular bone pit

The term alone cannot tell you why the bones were placed together. A sound interpretation considers the site and the evidence that supports it:

How many people were buried in a bone pit?

There is no general number that applies to bone pits as a category. Historical accounts give estimates for particular deposits, but those figures must remain attached to the site and the author who reported them. A count from one ossuary, cemetery repository, or conflict-related deposit cannot be used as a typical size for another.
