“The program can’t start because boost_filesystem.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “boost_filesystem.dll was not found,” “Error loading boost_filesystem.dll,” or a message saying the DLL is not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.
The safest fix for a boost_filesystem.dll error is to repair, update, verify, or reinstall the application that requested it. Do not download a replacement DLL and copy it into System32.

What boost_files.dll is
boost_filesystem.dll is a Windows dynamic library built from Boost.Filesystem, part of the Boost C++ Libraries. Boost.Filesystem provides programming functions for working with paths, files, and directories.
It is not a normal Windows component. The application that uses it usually installs its own copy beside the application’s executable. Windows searches an unpackaged application’s folder before system folders, so the correct location is normally the affected program’s installation directory, not C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The filename does not identify one universal DLL. Different developers can build Boost.Filesystem with different Boost versions, compiler settings, dependencies, and processor architectures.
Adobe Premiere Pro is a verified association, particularly Premiere Pro CC 2018 and CC 2019 and related Adobe components. However, another commercial application or game can also use the same filename.
Identify the program that owns the file
Before repairing anything, establish which executable is failing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLook for the program name in the error dialog. If the dialog only shows the DLL name, use one of these methods:
- Open the application’s shortcut menu and choose Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Open the target folder in File Explorer.
- Check whether
boost_filesystem.dllis present beside the program’s.exe.
You can also right-click a running shortcut, choose Open file location, and inspect the executable’s folder. If the error appears during startup, note whether it occurs with Premiere Pro, another Adobe application, a game launcher, or a specialist utility.
Do not assume every copy belongs to Adobe. The full executable path is more useful than the DLL filename alone.
Fix 1: Update or repair the owning application
An incomplete or damaged application installation is the highest-confidence place to start.
Adobe Premiere Pro and other Creative Cloud apps
If Premiere Pro or another Adobe application is named in the error:
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- Select Apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Open its three-dot menu.
- Choose Check for updates or use the available update command.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If updating does not help:
- Open Creative Cloud.
- Select Apps.
- Open the three-dot menu beside the affected application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Apps and install the application again.
Reinstalling from Creative Cloud restores the vendor-built DLL and its related files together. It is safer than replacing one file manually.
Other applications and games
Use the application’s own repair, update, or verification feature. For a game, open its launcher and look for commands named Verify, Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair.
For Epic Games titles:
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Click the three dots beside the game.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the scan to finish, then start the game again.
If no repair feature exists, uninstall the affected application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. Run the installer as an administrator only when the installer requires it or the vendor recommends it.

Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software may remove or quarantine an application file. This is a possible cause, not proof that the file is safe.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application or
boost_filesystem.dll. - Check the detected file’s full path and originating program.
Restore or allow the file only if all of these are true:
- The file is inside the legitimate application folder.
- The application came from its official installer.
- The publisher and installation source are trusted.
- You have reviewed the detection and are confident it is a false positive.
If there is any doubt, do not disable protection globally. Remove the application and reinstall it from the official vendor source instead.

Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A DLL must match the process that loads it.
- A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL.
- A 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL.
Microsoft documents this separation in its WOW64 guidance.
The public file records associated with this filename include both architectures:
| Catalog record | Architecture | Approximate size |
|---|---|---|
| Version 13.0.0.0 | 64-bit | 0.12 MB |
| Version 12.1.0.186 | 64-bit | 0.14 MB |
| Version 7.0.0.0 | 32-bit | 0.16 MB |
| Version 5.0.0.0 | 32-bit | 0.16 MB |
These are catalog records, not an official compatibility list. An Adobe crash report also identifies a Premiere Pro CC 2019 copy with file version 13.0.0.225, showing why the filename and version alone are not enough to select a replacement.
Install the correct application architecture instead of substituting a DLL:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings → System → About and check System type.
- Check the application’s installer or vendor documentation for its x86 or x64 build.
- Remove the damaged application.
- Install the matching official build.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications, so the important match is between the application process and its DLL, not simply the Windows edition.
Repair a missing Microsoft runtime dependency
Boost.Filesystem is not the Visual C++ Redistributable. A particular application build may depend on Microsoft runtime files, but installing Visual C++ does not replace boost_filesystem.dll.
Use this step when the error also mentions a file such as VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll, or another Microsoft C/C++ runtime component.

- x86 Visual C++ Redistributable for a 32-bit application.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed, or complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Older applications may require older Visual C++ packages as well. Keep an older redistributable when the application specifically requires it. If the only error remains boost_filesystem.dll, return to repairing the owning application.
Repair Windows components
Windows repair commands are appropriate when several unrelated Windows files or applications are failing. They are unlikely to restore an application-private Boost DLL.
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Run these commands in order:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Wait for each command to finish before running the next. Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. The System File Checker instructions explain the expected results.
Restart Windows and test the application. If SFC reports repaired files but the same application still cannot load, reinstall or verify that application.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time while leaving the damaged application installation untouched. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repairs are completed by the full version, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for an app-owned DLL.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCheck recent driver or system changes
A graphics, storage, or security change can expose an application problem, especially when the failure began immediately after an update. Device Manager is useful for checking hardware drivers, but it does not install boost_filesystem.dll.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, and Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click a recently changed device.
- Choose Properties → Driver.
- Review the driver date and available Roll Back Driver or Update Driver options.
Use Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support page for driver packages. Do not expect a driver update to repair an incomplete application installation.
Manually hunting through Device Manager and comparing driver versions can be slow. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the required updates; its free scan shows the findings, while installation is handled by the full version.
Try System Restore only after application repair
Use System Restore when the error began after a recent system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose Next.
- Select a restore point created before the failure.
- Choose Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next → Finish.
System Restore affects installed programs, settings, and system files. Personal files are generally not affected, but applications installed after the selected restore point may be removed. Read Microsoft’s System Restore guidance before confirming.
What not to do
Do not download a random DLL
DLL download sites pages can provide the wrong Boost build, wrong architecture, modified files, or a file with missing dependencies. A replacement may silence one message while causing a different crash or security problem.
The safe source is the official installer or updater for the application that owns the file. If the application is Adobe software, use Creative Cloud. If it is a game, use its official launcher verification or installer.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
boost_filesystem.dll is normally application-private. Copying it into a Windows system directory can make Windows load the wrong copy and can create DLL search-order or hijacking problems. Microsoft explains these risks in its DLL security guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. A normal Boost.Filesystem runtime library is not a COM server.
Running this is normally irrelevant:
regsvr32 boost_filesystem.dll
It will usually produce an entry-point error and will not repair the application. Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register a particular DLL.
If the DLL exists but still will not load
A present file can still fail because of:
- Wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- File corruption.
- A missing dependent DLL.
- An incompatible application build.
- Antivirus blocking the file.
- A shortcut launching an older installation folder.
- Multiple copies being found in different directories.
Check the executable’s folder, the shortcut target, and the next error message after any repair attempt. If multiple copies exist, do not merge them or replace one with another. Remove the affected application and install a clean vendor-provided build.

FAQ
Is boost_filesystem.dll part of Windows?
Normally no. It is built from Boost.Filesystem and is generally installed privately by the application that uses it.
Is this always an Adobe file?
No. Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2018 and CC 2019 are verified associations, but other applications can use the same filename.
Can Visual C++ Redistributable replace it?
No. Visual C++ supplies Microsoft runtime libraries. It may repair a separate dependency, but it does not replace Boost.Filesystem.
Should I register boost_filesystem.dll?
Normally no. regsvr32 is not an appropriate repair for a standard Boost.Filesystem runtime DLL.
What if reinstalling does not help?
Confirm that the shortcut launches the newly installed executable, check antivirus history, verify the application’s files, and look for a different missing dependency. If several Windows components are failing, run DISM followed by SFC.
Is it safe to copy the DLL from another computer?
No, not as a general consumer repair. The other copy may have a different architecture, Boost build, compiler dependency, or application-specific interface. Reinstall the owning application instead.
