On Windows, the strongest documented association is Adobe software, especially Photoshop and related DVA components.
The safest fix is not to download this DLL or copy it into System32. Find the Adobe application named by the error, then repair or reinstall that application from its official installer.

What boost_regex.dll is
boost_regex.dll is a Windows DLL built from Boost.Regex, a C++ regular-expression library. Boost.Regex can be compiled as a Windows DLL, but the copy used by an application is packaged by that application’s developer.
Adobe diagnostic reports have shown boost_regex.dll alongside other Adobe DVA libraries, including:

- Adobe Audition
- Adobe Media Encoder
- Photoshop Elements Organizer
The exact product cannot be identified from the filename alone. The full path in the error message, crash report, or Event Viewer is decisive.
It is an application DLL, not a Windows component. It normally sits beside the Adobe executable in an Adobe program folder. It should not normally be placed in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Reported version entries
Public file indexes have reported entries such as these:

These are catalog entries, not an Adobe compatibility chart. Do not use them to choose a replacement DLL. A file with the right name can still have the wrong architecture, exports, dependencies, or Adobe-specific build.
What the error means
Windows may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because boost_regex.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “boost_regex.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because boost_regex.dll was not found.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b).”
- “boost_regex.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Bad Image.”
These messages do not prove that boost_regex.dll itself is the original failure. Windows may report the first visible DLL while a dependent Adobe library or Microsoft runtime is the component that actually failed.
Before changing anything, note:
- Which Adobe product refuses to start.
- The complete path shown in the error or crash log.
- Whether the failure began after an update, migration, rollback, cleanup, or antivirus alert.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the message names another file such as
MSVCP140.dllorVCRUNTIME140.dll.
Fix 1: Repair the Adobe application
This is the most likely fix after an incomplete update, failed installation, disk migration, or interrupted download.
Creative Cloud applications
- Close Photoshop, Bridge, Lightroom, Audition, Media Encoder, or the affected Adobe program.
- Exit Creative Cloud from its taskbar notification-area icon.
- Open Adobe’s official Creative Cloud Uninstaller from Adobe Help.
- Right-click the uninstaller and select Run as administrator.
- Select Repair.
- Allow the repair to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud and update the affected application.
- Launch the application and test the operation that previously failed.
Repair restores Adobe installation files without immediately removing the whole Creative Cloud installation.

If Repair does not work:
- Run the Creative Cloud Uninstaller again.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install Creative Cloud again from Adobe’s official source.
- Reinstall the specific Adobe application that owns the DLL.
- Launch it before restoring custom plugins or third-party extensions.
If the application came from standalone installation media, an enterprise deployment package, or an organization-managed image, use that original installer instead of mixing files from another Adobe product.

How to confirm the repair worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The Adobe application starts without the DLL message.
- The original Adobe folder contains the restored application files.
- The same operation no longer produces a crash.
- Event Viewer no longer records the same application fault.
If only one Adobe application fails, repair that product first. Repairing Windows before repairing the owning application usually wastes time.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a DLL after an update or after Adobe changes an executable. The application then remains installed but cannot start.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
boost_regex.dll, the affected Adobe folder, or the Adobe executable. - Check the file path carefully.
- If the file is clearly inside the expected Adobe installation and the Adobe installation is trusted, review the available restore or allow options.
- Restart Windows.
- Run Adobe repair or reinstall the application so the file is restored from official media.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to make the application start. If the security product blocks the repaired file again, contact the security administrator or Adobe Support and provide the detected path and quarantine record.
A copy in a temporary folder, an unfamiliar application directory, or a Windows system directory deserves a malware scan rather than automatic restoration.
Fix 3: Check the file path and architecture
The full path tells you which program owns the DLL.
A path under an Adobe product directory suggests an Adobe installation problem. A path under a different application’s folder means that application, not Adobe, must be repaired.
To inspect the file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the path shown in the error.
- Right-click
boost_regex.dll. - Select Properties.
- Check the General and Details tabs.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Confirm that the location matches the application you were trying to launch.
Do not assume that every copy of the file is interchangeable. A 32-bit DLL cannot replace a required 64-bit build, and a DLL from another Adobe release may use different dependencies.

On 64-bit Windows, both 32-bit and 64-bit applications can be installed. Installing a 64-bit runtime does not automatically repair a 32-bit Adobe application.

The correct solution is to restore the exact build through the owning application’s installer.
Fix 4: Repair a missing Microsoft runtime
boost_regex.dll is not the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Install a Visual C++ package only when the error names a Microsoft runtime such as:
MSVCP140.dll
VCRUNTIME140.dll
MSVCP120.dll
Adobe’s installer may also report a runtime failure separately.

- Read the runtime filename in the error.
- Download the matching package from Microsoft.
- Install x86 for a 32-bit application.
- Install x64 for a 64-bit application on 64-bit Windows.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch Adobe again.
Older applications may require an older Visual C++ generation. Do not assume that the newest package replaces every legacy runtime.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components
Windows component corruption is less likely here because boost_regex.dll normally belongs to an application, not Windows. SFC and DISM will not normally recreate a missing Adobe DLL, but they can help when several Windows programs are also failing.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Adobe application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Its official System File Checker guidance explains the process and result messages.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM will not restore an Adobe DLL that was deleted from an Adobe folder. Repair the Adobe installation if the commands complete successfully but the same error remains.

Fix 6: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics or storage driver is not a normal source of a missing boost_regex.dll file. Consider driver troubleshooting only when Adobe crashes with display-driver errors, the system has disk I/O problems, or multiple applications fail after a hardware change.
Check drivers through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters for graphics drivers.
- Expand Disk drives and Storage controllers for storage hardware.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver or install the latest package from the hardware manufacturer’s official site.
- Restart Windows and test Adobe.
Do not replace drivers merely because boost_regex.dll is missing. Repair the owning application first.

Windows Features are not a normal source for boost_regex.dll. Do not enable random legacy components hoping to make the file load.
Check them only when the Adobe installer or another error specifically names an optional Windows component:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the component named by the installer or error.
- Enable it only when you know it is required.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
This is not a substitute for reinstalling the Adobe product.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. A private Boost.Regex runtime DLL is not normally a COM server.
Running this command:
regsvr32 boost_regex.dll
will commonly produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.
Do not use regsvr32 unless the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that exact DLL.

What not to do
- Do not download
boost_regex.dllfrom a random DLL download site. - Do not copy the file into
System32orSysWOW64. - Do not copy a DLL from another Adobe product or another computer.
- Do not replace a 64-bit file with a 32-bit file.
- Do not delete the Adobe folder before checking whether a repair is available.
- Do not disable antivirus permanently.
- Do not assume Visual C++ is required when the error does not name a Microsoft runtime.
- Do not use System Restore as the first solution when an official Adobe installer is available.
A downloaded DLL can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, use incompatible dependencies, or fail to match the Adobe executable. Even a clean file may not fix the damaged installation that caused the error.
Advanced fallback
If Adobe repair and reinstall both fail:
- Record the exact DLL path.
- Open Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Record the faulting application, faulting module, exception code, and path.
- Check antivirus quarantine history.
- Check available disk space and disk health.
- Test the application in a new Windows user profile.
- Provide the records to Adobe Support or the administrator managing the installation.
Adobe’s Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool is a later-stage cleanup method for persistent corrupt installation records. It removes Adobe installation data, so use it only after ordinary Repair and uninstall/reinstall have failed.
FAQ
Is boost_regex.dll part of Windows?
No. It is normally an application-local DLL. Adobe is the strongest documented association, but other Windows software can also build and ship Boost.Regex.
Which Adobe application owns my copy?
The filename alone cannot tell you. Check the complete filesystem path in the error, crash report, or Event Viewer. Multiple Adobe products can contain separate copies.
Should I put it in System32?
No. That can create version conflicts and DLL search-order problems. Restore the file through the installer for the application that owns it.

Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Only if the error names a missing Microsoft runtime or the Adobe installer reports a runtime problem. Visual C++ does not replace boost_regex.dll.
Can I use a DLL from another Adobe installation?
No. Adobe builds may differ in architecture, exports, dependencies, and packaging. Repair the affected product instead.
What if every Adobe application fails?
Check Creative Cloud installation state, antivirus quarantine, disk errors, profile corruption, and sign-in or licensing issues. If all Adobe programs fail together, repairing Creative Cloud may be more appropriate than repairing each application individually.
Does regsvr32 repair this DLL?
Normally, no. boost_regex.dll is not generally a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. The correct repair is to restore it through the owning application’s installer.
