The safest repair is to protect your .mny financial files, then repair or reinstall the same Money edition from legitimate installation media.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list to identify the correct path before changing anything:

- Microsoft Money stopped launching after an update, cleanup, or reinstall: repair or reinstall Money.
- Your antivirus recently reported or quarantined
mnyxml.dll: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything. - You copied Money to another computer: reinstall the complete program instead of copying DLL files.
- The file exists, but Windows says it could not be loaded: investigate dependencies, architecture, permissions, or corruption.
- The error names
MFC42.DLLor another file: repair the dependency or reinstall Money. The problem is not necessarilymnyxml.dllitself. - An unrelated program reports this filename: do not assume it is genuine. Confirm which executable is requesting it.
- You are about to uninstall Money: first make a separate backup of every
.mnyfile.
What mnyxml.dll belongs to
mnyxml.dll is associated with Microsoft Money and is commonly identified as the Microsoft Money XML Support Module. Historical installation evidence places it in Money’s own System directory beside the Money executable and other Money modules.
That makes it an application DLL, not a normal Windows file. It should normally remain with Microsoft Money rather than being placed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

It is also different from Microsoft XML Core Services files such as msxml3.dll and msxml6.dll. Installing MSXML does not provide a verified repair for a missing Money-owned DLL.
Reported messages include:
- “This application failed to start because mnyxml.dll was not found.”
- “The file mnyxml.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “The program can’t start because mnyxml.dll is missing.”
- “Error loading mnyxml.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load mnyxml.dll.”
The exact wording depends on Windows, the Money release, and the failure type.
Before repairing Microsoft Money, back up your data
Microsoft Money’s program files and your financial records are separate. Reinstalling the program does not necessarily delete your .mny files, but you should not rely on that.

*.mny. - Copy each relevant file to an external drive or another safe folder.

If Money still opens on another computer or under another Windows account, create a fresh Money backup from inside the program too.
Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Money
Repair is the least disruptive option because it can replace missing application files without removing the entire installation.
Try Windows Settings
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Money.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if that option exists.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test Money.
Not every traditional desktop program exposes an Advanced options or Repair button. If Microsoft Money is not listed, or Repair is unavailable, use Control Panel instead.
Try Control Panel
- Press
Win + R. - Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select Microsoft Money in Programs and Features.
- Look for Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch Money from its normal shortcut.
A successful repair should restore the missing module to the Money installation and allow the program to start without the mnyxml.dll message. If the installer asks for original media or cannot find its source files, proceed to a full reinstall.

Fix 2: Reinstall the same Microsoft Money edition
A complete reinstall is the most reliable solution when the installation was partially deleted, moved, or damaged.
- Confirm that your
.mnyfiles are backed up. - Find the original Money installer, disc, or trusted installation media.
- If Money is still listed, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select Microsoft Money and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Run the original installer as an administrator:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Install Money to its normal location unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch Money and open a copy of your backed-up data file.
If the installer is old, right-click it, select Properties > Compatibility, and use the compatibility troubleshooter or test an appropriate older Windows compatibility mode. Compatibility settings are not a guarantee that Money is supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11, but they can help older installers complete.
Microsoft Money is discontinued. Microsoft no longer provides a current official standalone download for every Money release, and Microsoft support records indicate that the former Money Plus Sunset download was removed from Microsoft’s servers. Do not replace the missing file with a random download from a DLL website. If you no longer have legitimate installation media, preserve your data and evaluate any replacement installer carefully.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine an old application file. Do not automatically restore it simply because Money needs it. First confirm that the detection concerns your legitimate Money installation.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent events for
mnyxml.dll, Microsoft Money, or the Money installation folder. - Expand the event and review its path and action.
- If the file came from your original, trusted Money installer and the detection is clearly a false positive, use the available restore action.
- Reinstall Money from the trusted media if restore is unavailable.
- Run another scan before launching the program.
If Protection history identifies an unknown file, a temporary folder, or a different program, do not restore it. Delete or quarantine it and reinstall Money from known-good media instead.
Fix 4: Resolve “could not be loaded” and dependency errors
“Could not be loaded” does not always mean the named file is absent. Windows may find mnyxml.dll but fail to load it because a dependency is missing, the file is damaged, the architecture does not match, or access is blocked.
Check these points:
- Open File Explorer and locate the Microsoft Money installation folder.
- Confirm that
mnyxml.dllis beside the Money program files, not just somewhere in a downloads folder. - Do not move it to
System32orSysWOW64. - Check the exact error text for another named DLL, such as
MFC42.DLL. - If another dependency is named, repair or reinstall the complete Money installation rather than downloading that dependency separately.
- If the file was copied from another computer, remove that copied installation and reinstall Money.
- Check whether the file is blocked:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- On the General tab, look for an Unblock option.
- Only use it when the file came from trusted installation media.
Public file catalogs disagree about whether particular mnyxml.dll records are 32-bit or 64-bit. Those catalog labels are not authoritative version information. Do not select a replacement based on an online architecture label. Use the file supplied with the same Money edition as the executable requesting it.

Do not use regsvr32 for this problem
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified basis for treating mnyxml.dll as a self-registering COM server.
Registering it can produce another error without restoring Money’s missing dependencies. Reinstall the application instead.
Fix 5: Repair broader Windows component corruption
Because mnyxml.dll belongs to Microsoft Money, SFC normally will not restore it. These commands are useful when other Windows programs are also failing or Windows itself appears damaged.
First install available Windows updates and restart:
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Search for
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Money again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling an application-owned Money DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and uncertain. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what needs attention, while the repair action requires the full version; reinstalling Microsoft Money remains the definitive fix for a damaged Money installation.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when other evidence points there
A graphics or storage driver is not a normal cause of a missing mnyxml.dll. Consider driver work only if Money began failing after a hardware change, a driver update, or a system migration, or if Device Manager shows a separate device error.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, and System devices.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Review the Device status message on the General tab.
- On the Driver tab, choose Update Driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not uninstall a working driver merely because Money reports mnyxml.dll. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the specific versions involved, with installation through the full version; driver updating is secondary here, and reinstalling Money remains the definitive repair.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
If Money worked immediately before a cleanup tool, update, driver installation, or other system change, System Restore may reverse that change.

System Restore does not replace a backup of your .mny files. Do not use it as a reason to delete those files.
Prevention after Money starts
- Keep a separate backup of your
.mnyfiles. - Keep the original Money installer or installation media with your records.
- Do not copy individual DLLs between computers.
- Do not add Money DLLs to Windows system folders.
- Review antivirus quarantine events before restoring files.
- Avoid cleanup utilities that remove files from legacy application folders.
- Record the Money edition and installation location that successfully works.
- Test a backup copy of your data after reinstalling.
FAQ
Is mnyxml.dll a Windows system file?
No reliable evidence indicates that it ships as a standard Windows component. It is associated with Microsoft Money and normally belongs in the Money installation directory.
Should I download mnyxml.dll separately?
No. A standalone DLL may be malicious, corrupt, the wrong architecture, or from a different Money release. Restore it through Money’s Repair option or reinstall the complete application.
Is mnyxml.dll part of MSXML?
No. mnyxml.dll is a Money module. Files such as msxml3.dll and msxml6.dll belong to Microsoft XML Core Services and are different components.

Will SFC fix the missing file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while mnyxml.dll is associated with an application. Run SFC only when broader Windows corruption is suspected.
Why does the file exist but still fail to load?
A missing dependency, damaged file, mismatched Money release, incompatible architecture, blocked access, or incomplete migration can cause that result. Reinstalling the complete Money edition is safer than replacing one file.
Does Microsoft still support Money on Windows 11?
Microsoft Money is discontinued, and compatibility is not an official Windows 11 support commitment. If repair fails, preserve your financial records and test the original installer in a controlled environment rather than deleting your only data copy.
