Borderlands is recognizable as an adaptation of Gearbox and 2K’s game franchise, but its Pandora setting and familiar characters do not automatically make a compelling film. Eli Roth’s 2024 movie turns a sprawling, interactive world into a linear quest; the result offers franchise identity without consistently giving its ensemble, comedy, or action enough momentum. You do not need to play the games to follow the premise, though familiarity may make the film’s world and characters more meaningful.
What is the Borderlands movie about?
Directed by Eli Roth, Borderlands follows Lilith, an infamous bounty hunter who returns to Pandora. There she encounters an unlikely team and becomes involved in protecting a girl with extraordinary power. The official film synopsis identifies it as based on the game from Gearbox and 2K. The official film site provides the premise and credits Roth.

Is Borderlands a good adaptation of the games?
As an adaptation, it draws on the wider Borderlands franchise rather than directly retelling one named installment, as Rotten Tomatoes’ background article explains. That gives the film room to assemble a familiar world and characters around a new feature-length quest. The trade-off is that recognition is not the same as development: the setting can feel like Pandora while the story still has to earn its momentum on its own.
The adaptation challenge is substantial. The games offer an expansive world and interactive play; a film has to select a route through that material and make the resulting plot work without player choice. Epic Games Store’s feature on the franchise describes that shift from an open-world game with roots in procedural generation to a linear, plot-driven film. Here, the premise supplies a clear destination, but the journey does not always make its team or quest feel as lively as the setting promises.

How do the story and ensemble work?
Pandora’s hostile terrain, corporate interests, fortune hunters, and vault-seeking premise provide usable ingredients for a scrappy adventure. GameSpot’s review emphasizes those elements in its account of the film’s world. The central question is whether the group gives them dramatic shape. In this adaptation, the ensemble is a collection of recognizable personalities, but the quest does not consistently turn their differences into strong character interplay or escalating stakes. The plot moves toward its objective more reliably than it builds a sense of discovery.
The principal cast includes Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jack Black as Claptrap, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, and Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ film listing. Their presence helps establish the franchise’s recognizable lineup, but a cast list cannot substitute for chemistry or characterization. The film’s challenge is to make this group feel like a team rather than simply bring familiar names together for the mission.
Do the comedy, action, and performances capture the games?
The games’ irreverent energy is part of their identity, yet translating that tone requires more than placing jokes and eccentric characters into a movie. When the humor does not grow naturally from the characters or the situation, the film’s chaotic surface can feel more like an imitation of the games’ attitude than a cinematic equivalent of it.
Critical response at release was sharply negative. RogerEbert.com’s 2024 review criticized the screenplay as shallow and the action direction as ineffective, while noting that Blanchett sells some material with a knowing performance. Those are that review’s judgments, not objective measures, but they point to the film’s central imbalance: a committed lead performance can lend a scene personality, yet it cannot by itself supply the story or action with sustained force.

Should you watch it if you have not played the games?
You can understand the movie without prior knowledge of the games: the film establishes Lilith’s return to Pandora, the team, and the protection mission. Playing the games is not a prerequisite, and this is not a direct adaptation of one installment that requires familiarity with a specific game’s plot. For longtime fans, the broader franchise references and recognizable characters may add interest; for newcomers, the film has to stand on its own as a quest adventure—and its uneven storytelling and comedy may be more apparent without that extra recognition.
