Borderlands 3 Fatal Error on PC: What to Try First

A Borderlands 3 fatal error does not point to one confirmed cause. Check your edition’s requirements, use 2K’s PC guidance, and treat forum fixes as reversible experiments.

If Borderlands 3 shows “Fatal error!” or “The UE4-OakGame Game has crashed and will close,” the message alone does not identify the cause—and there is no verified fix that works for every PC. First note whether you play through Steam or Epic, which operating system you use, and whether the crash happens at launch, when starting a new game, or during play. Then check the published requirements and follow 2K’s official PC troubleshooting guidance before trying reversible community-reported changes.

What the fatal-error message does—and doesn’t—tell you

“Fatal error” is a crash label, not a diagnosis. Steam players have reported different exception details and crashes at different points, including launch and in-session play. Those reports illustrate why the same broad message can have different causes; they do not establish how common any cause is. (April 2024 Steam discussion; August 2024 Steam discussion)

Before troubleshooting, write down your launcher (Steam or Epic), operating system, when the crash occurs, and the complete error text, including any exception code. That context helps distinguish a startup failure from a crash after the game has loaded.

Check the published PC requirements

Compare your system with the requirements published for the edition and launcher you use. The official Borderlands Support page was published April 14, 2025, and updated February 26, 2026; Steam publishes a separate listing. These are published specifications, not a fresh compatibility test of every newer Windows release.

Source and scope Minimum Recommended
Borderlands Support (Windows requirements; page updated February 26, 2026) Windows 7/8/10 (latest service pack); AMD FX-8350 or Intel i5-3570; 6 GB RAM; Radeon HD 7970 or GeForce GTX 680 2 GB; 75 GB storage. Additional software listed: DirectX June 2010, Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable, .NET 4.0, and PhysX 9.14. Ryzen 5 2600 or Intel i7-4770; 16 GB RAM; Radeon RX 590 or GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB; 75 GB storage.
Steam listing (Steam edition) Windows 7/10 (latest service pack); FX-8350 or i5-3570; 6 GB RAM; HD 7970 or GTX 680 2 GB; DirectX 11; 75 GB storage. Ryzen 5 2600 or i7-4770; 16 GB RAM; RX 590 or GTX 1060 6 GB; DirectX 12.

The pages differ in their Windows wording and in how they specify DirectX. Use the listing for your edition rather than treating Steam’s DirectX 11 minimum and DirectX 12 recommendation as a universal rule for every launcher or platform. If your PC falls below the listed baseline, that is a compatibility concern to address, but the error text itself does not prove that a particular component is defective.

Start with 2K’s official PC troubleshooting guidance

2K’s general PC troubleshooting article covers common crashes, freezes, and errors. Follow its current steps for your setup; it identifies clearing the game cache as an initial troubleshooting step. Because those instructions are general, they should not be treated as proof that cache is the cause of this particular crash.

If the problem continues, 2K notes that support may request DxDiag and MSinfo information to understand the computer’s hardware and software environment. Use the article’s instructions to prepare those reports and contact support with your crash timing and full error text. Avoid downloading unknown “fixer” or optimizer programs: the reported error does not establish that such software is needed.

Community-reported changes: use only as reversible tests

Steam discussions include individual reports of changing the DirectX launch option, deleting a WindowsNoEditor configuration folder, and adjusting window mode, VSync, or texture streaming. One April 2024 commenter said forcing DX12 resolved their case; other reports suggested DX11 in a different context. An August 2024 discussion included a report of recurring access violations and comments mentioning reinstalling, driver updates, and “-dx11 -sw.” These are anecdotes, not official recommendations or controlled comparisons; they do not establish which setting will work for your PC. • Before changing anything: Record the original launch options and graphics settings. Back up configuration files before moving or deleting them; a configuration reset can remove preferences.
  • Change one variable at a time: If you test a graphics API launch option or a configuration change, use instructions applicable to your installed launcher and version. The cited reports do not establish exact steps for every current installation.
  • Check the result: Reproduce the same situation that triggered the crash. If stability gets worse or the game no longer launches, revert the last change before trying another.

There is no evidence here that DX11 is generally better than DX12, or vice versa. Treat either API setting as a diagnostic experiment, not a guaranteed fix.

When to stop experimenting

If the official guidance does not resolve the crash, or a change makes it worse, restore the settings you recorded and contact 2K support with your DxDiag and MSinfo reports, launcher, operating system, crash timing, and full error. Avoid buying replacement hardware or paying for repair software based solely on the fatal-error message: the available reports do not identify a hardware cause.
