The right fix depends on what you’re joining. A dedicated server needs a current, authenticated server and a reachable UDP port; a friend-hosted world uses Hytale’s automatic port-forwarding features and usually shouldn’t send you straight into manual port configuration. If the connection is merely slow or the world will not load on Windows, check the network-adapter guidance instead. Hytale is in early access, so update both game and server before troubleshooting older instructions.
First identify the connection you’re trying to make
- Dedicated server: Follow the server owner’s checks for authentication, matching protocol versions, and UDP reachability.
- Friend-hosted world: The host’s game handles automatic port forwarding. Try the current game version and use the Online Play screen’s status and network report before changing router settings.
- Slow join or world that will not load: If you’re on Windows and single-player works, but joining a friend or server is very slow, use the adapter checks below. This pattern is different from an immediate rejection.
Also note whether the failure happens with one server or every server. That is a useful way to narrow where to investigate, but by itself it does not prove whether the cause is your connection or the server.
Update Hytale and retry
Update the client first. If you are joining a dedicated server, ask its owner to update that server too: Hytale’s server manual says client and server protocol hashes must match exactly, and a server needs updating when Hytale releases an update.
Recent Update 6 notes record changes to friend-world connectivity, not a universal fix for every failed connection. In version 0.6.6, dated September 14, 2026, retrying a join sets up automatic port forwarding again, and the game tries other connections if a router does not answer on one. Version 0.6.4, dated September 7, 2026, improved discovery for slow routers and addressed a case where two PCs on the same network could remove each other’s port forward. Version 0.6.1, dated August 27, 2026, added a direct network path when available instead of using an installed VPN adapter or relay, and added the Online Play screen’s Copy Network Report button. These are fixes documented for those versions; they do not establish that every current failure is caused by port forwarding. See the Update 6 hotfix notes.

If you cannot join a dedicated server
Check that the server started and authenticated
The host should confirm that the server finished starting and authenticated successfully. The manual describes /auth login device as the server authentication flow. Authentication is a server-side requirement for communicating with Hytale service APIs and accepting player connections; it is separate from matching the client and server protocol versions.
Before changing firewall or router settings, check the server console and logs for startup, authentication, or version errors. A server that has not completed startup or is running a different protocol version cannot be fixed by opening a port.

Verify UDP port reachability
Dedicated Hytale servers use QUIC over UDP, not TCP. The documented default is UDP 5520; a server can use a custom port through its bind argument. If the server is behind a router, the owner needs to forward its configured UDP port to the server machine and allow that port through the machine’s firewall. The manual says TCP forwarding is not required. QUIC handles NAT traversal well in many cases, but that is not a guarantee: the manual still calls for a UDP port forward when players cannot connect.
- Windows: Create an inbound Windows Defender Firewall rule for UDP 5520, or the custom port the server uses.
- Linux with ufw: Run
sudo ufw allow 5520/udp; replace 5520 if the server uses another port. - Linux with iptables: The manual’s example accepts UDP traffic to destination port 5520. Adapt the rule to the server’s configured port and firewall setup.
Keep the rule limited to the configured UDP port; disabling the firewall entirely is not a safe troubleshooting shortcut. The manual’s platform examples and bind details are in the Hytale Server Manual.

If a friend-hosted world fails
Do not assume a friend-world failure requires you to set up a dedicated-server port forward. Hytale’s Update 6 notes document automatic port-forwarding behavior for hosted worlds, including a retry fix in 0.6.6. Ask the host to update and retry the join. On the host’s Online Play screen, check whether the game says friends can join; if the problem persists, use Copy Network Report to capture connection details for support or further diagnosis.
If joining is very slow on Windows
Hypixel Studios’ support article describes a specific pattern: internet appears stable, single-player works, but joining a server or friend is very slow or the world does not load. In some cases, the friend may see the player move while that player cannot interact. The guidance applies to Windows and says rare issues with some network devices, including Intel and Realtek devices, can affect Wi-Fi and Ethernet. It does not mean every failed join is an adapter problem.

The article proposes a diagnostic comparison: connect through a USB Ethernet dongle and try the same connection using that adapter. This is a way to test whether the existing network adapter may be involved, not a required Hytale accessory or guaranteed cure. If you proceed with adapter changes, change one setting at a time and retry after each change, as advised in Hypixel Studios’ slow-connection guidance.
Try the lower-risk settings first
- Open the network adapter’s properties in Windows and disable Priority & VLAN, if the setting is present. Retry the connection.
- If the issue remains, disable Recv. Segment Coalescing (IPv4) and Recv. Segment Coalescing (IPv6), if present. Retest.
- Only if needed, consider the article’s next group of settings: Advanced EEE, ARP Offload, Energy-Efficient Ethernet, Flow Control, and Green Ethernet. Change them carefully and retest.
Adapter names and available properties vary by device. The support article labels its fourth solution “quite invasive” and warns that it can be difficult to reverse without reinstalling the driver because default values may not persist. Treat that as a last resort and follow the official slow-connection instructions rather than changing a long list of advanced values casually.

Save logs and connection details before escalating
Logs can help distinguish a client-side issue from a dedicated server’s startup or authentication problem. Hypixel Studios’ log-location guide says the game retains only the ten most recent client logs, so copy the relevant log soon after the failure.
- In the launcher, select the Settings cog, then Open Directory → User Data. This opens game data for the selected patchline, including client, editor, and server logs.
- To find the launcher log, use the launcher’s Hytale Install button to open the main installation folder.
- For a world’s server logs, check that world’s own folder; each world stores its own server logs.
- To report a bug through the launcher, use the bug icon and leave Attach logs enabled. The support guide says this attaches the launcher log and recent client/editor and server logs as described there. Account bug reporting also allows a log to be attached manually.
- For a friend-connection problem, include the Online Play screen’s Copy Network Report output where relevant.
Bandwidth is not the same as reachability
Hytale’s official download page lists 2 Mbit/s download as the minimum and 8 Mbit/s as the recommended multiplayer bandwidth, and identifies multiplayer as using UDP/QUIC. These figures describe bandwidth requirements; meeting them does not confirm that a particular server is reachable or that a router, firewall, or adapter is working correctly.
