If Borderlands 3 crashes on PS5, start with the step that matches the trigger: fully power down after a crash on waking from Rest Mode, or close and restart the game if lag and hitching build during a long session. For startup failures or crashes without a clear pattern, work through the lower-impact console checks before trying storage or reinstall steps. No single step is a guaranteed fix for every crash.
Start with the symptom you see
- Crash after waking from Rest Mode: Borderlands Support documents this specific pattern and recommends saving, fully powering down the console, and not leaving the game open in Rest Mode. See its October 28, 2025 notice.
- Lag or hitching that gets worse over time: A September 17, 2025 2K Support notice reported memory-leak reports on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X, and advised closing the game completely and restarting when stability declines. The notice is a dated report; it does not establish the issue’s current status.
- Game will not start, or the cause is unclear: Try the general console checks below. Sony and 2K list these as troubleshooting options, not as confirmed Borderlands 3-specific cures.
10 ways to troubleshoot Borderlands 3 crashes on PS5
1. Close the game and restart the PS5
Close Borderlands 3 fully, then restart the console. 2K recommends a complete restart as a general console troubleshooting step so the system can resync and process updates. It is a low-impact place to begin, but it is not a guaranteed game-specific fix. See 2K’s general console troubleshooting guide.
2. Avoid leaving the game open through Rest Mode
If the crash happens after waking the PS5, save your game, close it, and fully power down the console instead of leaving the title running in the background through Rest Mode. Borderlands Support specifically describes that wake-from-Rest-Mode crash pattern and recommends fully powering down after saving.
3. Restart when stability declines during a long session
If lag or hitching gradually increases, close the game completely rather than leaving it suspended, then restart the PS5. In its September 17, 2025 notice, 2K Support said it had received memory-leak reports affecting PS5 and Xbox Series S/X and gave this as a workaround for declining stability. The notice does not confirm whether the reports remain unresolved today.

4. Install available PS5 system software updates
Check for and install available system software updates. Both 2K’s general console guidance and PlayStation’s game-start troubleshooting guidance include keeping system software updated among the checks. Follow the PS5’s on-screen instructions and allow the update to finish before testing the game again.
5. Move the game to console storage if it is on USB extended storage
If Borderlands 3 is installed on USB extended storage and will not start, move it to the PS5’s internal console storage and try again. Sony includes this as a general diagnostic recommendation for games that fail to start; it is not a confirmed Borderlands 3 crash cure.

6. Test the internet connection if the problem appears when connecting online
If the failure occurs while connecting or launching online, use Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. 2K lists this PS5 check in its general troubleshooting guide. The result can help identify a connection problem, but it does not diagnose every application crash.
7. Try another PS5 user profile
Test the game from a different PS5 user profile, or create a new one for diagnosis. 2K notes that a corrupted profile can cause launch problems and suggests trying another or new profile. If the game starts there, that points toward a profile-specific issue; it does not by itself identify the underlying cause.

8. Clear the cache and rebuild the database in Safe Mode
PlayStation and 2K list clearing the cache and rebuilding the database as troubleshooting options. Start the PS5 in Safe Mode and use the current on-console prompts to find the relevant options; labels or available choices can change with system software. Back up important data before storage-related Safe Mode actions.
9. Consider Repair Console Storage in Safe Mode
If the earlier checks do not help, 2K lists Repair Console Storage as another Safe Mode option. Treat it as a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed repair, and back up important saves before entering Safe Mode.

10. Restore licenses or delete and reinstall the game
If simpler checks fail, Sony’s game-start guidance includes restoring licenses and deleting and re-downloading the game. Reinstallation takes more time and may require a fresh download, so reserve it for later in the sequence. Back up saves before any step that could put local data at risk, and note any error code shown on screen.

- Rest Mode trigger: Save, close the game, and fully power down rather than leaving it open through Rest Mode.
- Gradual instability: Close the title completely and restart when lag or hitching starts to build.
- Startup problem or unclear trigger: Begin with a full restart and available system updates; then check storage location, network if relevant, and another profile.
- Still crashing: Consider Safe Mode options, then license restoration or reinstall. Back up saves before steps that could affect local data.
When to contact support
If crashes continue, contact PlayStation or 2K Support with the error code, if one appears, and a concise description of the steps that reliably precede the crash—for example, whether it happens after Rest Mode, at startup, or after a long session. The official guidance does not establish a universal root cause, success rate, or fix for all PS5 crashes.
Do you need to buy another copy?
No. Buying another copy is not a troubleshooting fix. The U.S. PlayStation Store listing for Borderlands 3 PS4 & PS5 says eligible owners of the PS4 game can get the PS5 digital version at no extra cost under the listing’s stated conditions. Check the listing and your account eligibility rather than purchasing a second copy to address a crash.
