Borderlands 4 Specializations are a separate post-campaign progression system, not another name for a Vault Hunter’s main skill trees. The four branches—Survivor, Brute, Sharpshooter and Runner—offer broad stat bonuses. You earn progression through XP and activities, then spend points to complement your character’s combat style. Specialization respecs cost Eridium; Gearbox’s October 2025 update notes set the machine cost at 1,500 Eridium, though later balance changes mean you should check the current in-game descriptions.
What are Specializations in Borderlands 4?
Specializations are an additional progression menu that opens after the campaign. They add general stat bonuses on top of your Vault Hunter’s character-specific skills. 2K and Gearbox positioned them within the broader endgame progression loop, alongside activities such as weekly challenge missions and Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode. The Epic Games Store endgame guide describes progression through XP and activities; the available sources do not establish one universal minimum level or a fixed best route for every player.
How Specializations differ from skill trees
Your Vault Hunter’s three branching passive paths and three signature Action Skills are character-specific choices. Action Skills can be enhanced with augments and capstones, helping define how that character plays. Gearbox creative director Graeme Timmins described the system as enabling players to “enhance your Action Skills with special augments and capstone abilities” in the Vault Hunter skills overview.
Specializations are a separate layer: their bonuses are broadly applicable rather than an alternative set of character skill trees. Think of your skill trees as defining your core abilities and your Specialization investment as reinforcing parts of your combat loop.

The four Specialization branches
The Epic Games Store guide names four branches. Its overview lists health, shields, gun damage, status-effect chance and cooldown rate as examples of bonuses across the system, not as a complete node catalog. The broad combat emphases below are a way to orient your choices, not a guarantee that every node in a branch maps neatly to one role.
| Branch | Broad emphasis | How to think about it |
|---|---|---|
| Survivor | Survivability | Look for bonuses that support staying alive, such as health or shield-related effects. |
| Brute | Melee and close combat | Consider it if your preferred combat loop brings you into close range; check each node’s current wording. |
| Sharpshooter | Ranged damage | Review its current nodes for bonuses that fit your weapon and damage priorities. |
| Runner | Movement and melee | Check how its current effects work with your movement and attack choices; its bonuses have been tuned in patches. |
These descriptions are broad orientation only. The guide identifies example stat benefits across Specializations but does not provide a comprehensive, current node-by-node comparison. Read the descriptions in your game before committing points.

How to choose where to spend points
There is no supported universal best allocation for every Vault Hunter. Choose nodes that strengthen the skills and combat loop you actually use, rather than following a branch label as if it guaranteed a particular build.
- If you often need to recover from incoming damage, prioritize relevant health or shield effects.
- If your build relies on a specific weapon or damage type, check whether a node’s stated bonus applies to it.
- If your Action Skill is central to your rotation, compare cooldown-related bonuses with the time you spend waiting to use it.
- If you rely on status effects, confirm the node’s exact effect and how it interacts with your skills and gear.
Use the node text in the current game as the deciding reference. The October 2025 update notes, January 2026 update notes and Version 1.6 notes from April 2026 document continuing balance work. For example, the October notes changed what Groundbreaker stores, and the January notes changed Specialization bonuses for Daredevil and Runner.

How to respec Specialization points
Specialization resets use Eridium at the Specialization Respec Machine. Gearbox’s official notes for the October 23, 2025 update reduced its cost from 5,000 to 1,500 Eridium. That is the cost recorded in that update, not a guarantee that a later patch has not changed it. Check the machine and current patch notes before spending Eridium.
Why older Specialization advice may be out of date
Specialization effects are subject to balance changes, and official notes show that tuning continued after launch. Node values or interactions quoted by an older build guide may no longer match your game version. When comparing advice, check its date and patch context, then verify the relevant node descriptions in-game. This matters especially for specific bonuses and interactions; the broad branch names and system role are more useful as orientation than as a substitute for current node text.
