Vile Bounties are purple contracts found on Bounty Boards while playing in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode (UVHM). To repeat them, accept an available contract, defeat its marked target, then save and quit to refresh the boards when you have run out of available contracts. This is a guide-reported farming loop, not a guaranteed spawn schedule.
What Vile Bounties are—and which mode you need
Vile Bounties are contracts marked in purple on Bounty Boards. A current Borderlands 4 XP farming guide associates them with Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode (UVHM); it says they do not appear in normal mode outside story missions involving Vile enemies. The reviewed guide does not establish the exact campaign progress or rank required to unlock UVHM or these contracts, so there is no reliable unlock step to give here.

For the repeatable contract activity, set your session to UVHM and check Bounty Boards at Safehouses you have unlocked. Bounty Pack 5: Amara and the Vile Shadows is separate optional DLC; 2K describes it as including a repeatable mission and says the base game is required for that DLC. It is not a prerequisite for the base-game Vile Bounty contracts. 2K’s September 10, 2026 announcement lists Borderlands 4 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.
How to farm Vile Bounties
- Set the session to UVHM. The guide-described Vile contracts are associated with this mode.
- Check unlocked Safehouse Bounty Boards. Accept any available purple Vile Bounty contracts.
- Travel to the marked target and defeat it. Complete the contract, then check the boards for other available Vile contracts.
- Save and quit when you have exhausted the available contracts. Reload and check the boards again; the guide describes this as a way to refresh offerings, not a promise that a particular contract will return immediately.
A convenient board to start from
PC Gamer recommends the Makeshift Chalet Safehouse in Lopside, Carcadia Burn, because targets tend to be nearby, reducing travel. It is a convenience, not a requirement: any unlocked board can be used, and target locations can vary.

Are Vile Bounties worth farming for XP?
They are described as an XP-focused activity, so they may suit players who want to gain experience through repeatable contracts. The available guides do not establish a current-build XP rate or reliable completion time, so there is no substantiated numeric comparison to other farms. The same guide characterizes their loot potential as lower than some alternatives; if gear is your main goal, consider another activity rather than treating Vile Bounties as a loot farm.
Vile Bounty contracts versus His Vile Sanctum
His Vile Sanctum is a Weekly Wildcard Mission, not one of the repeatable purple Vile Bounty contracts. The shared word “Vile” does not mean the activities have the same access rules or reward loop. The April 30, 2026 Version 1.6 notes identify His Vile Sanctum as a Weekly Wildcard Mission and list a reward for that weekly activity.

What to do if a contract does not appear
Contract availability has been patch-sensitive. In its January 29, 2026 notes, Borderlands Support said it fixed issues that prevented Intrusive Thoughts Vile Ripper, Deep State Phalanx, and Breaux Chambeaux Phalanx contracts from appearing when accepted. That documents past fixes; it does not establish that those problems still occur. If a specific contract is missing, check the current game update notes and try refreshing the boards by saving and quitting, rather than assuming a particular spawn or unlock condition.
