Metacritic lists a 76 Metascore from 10 critic reviews across its aggregate page; its separate Xbox One page reports 80 from seven reviews. Those are different review sets, not platform-to-platform test results.

Metacritic’s aggregate page reports a 76 Metascore from 10 critic reviews. In that review set, six reviews were positive (60%), four were mixed (40%), and none were negative. Metacritic’s aggregate page reflects the 2019 reviews and was accessed in 2026.

What did reviewers like and criticize?
Visual and quality-of-life improvements
Reviewers on the Xbox One page praised the enhancements to the original game. That response fits the edition’s stated aims: 2K described it as adding visual upgrades and quality-of-life improvements alongside new weapons and the four content add-on packs.

#1 Best Overall
- Bazillions of guns: rocket-launching shotguns, enemy-torching revolvers, smgs that Fire Lightning rounds, and tons more.
- Radical art style: traditional rendering combined with hand-drawn textures give Borderlands its iconic style.
- Intense vehicular combat: behind the wheel, engage in frenetic vehicle-to-vehicle combat.
- Co-op frenzy: online or together on the couch, tear through enemies as a Crew of up to 4.
- With improved character models, weapons, textures, and more, Borderlands shines on a 4K display.
Technical rough edges and familiar gameplay
The Xbox One review set also includes reservations about occasional frame-rate or rendering issues. Some critics questioned how much the updated package adds for players who already know the game. The favorable overall reception therefore reflects a useful refresh, not a consensus that every technical issue was resolved or that returning players would find it essential.
What does the edition include?
According to 2K’s April 3, 2019 announcement, the edition includes all four content add-on packs, new weapons, visual upgrades, and quality-of-life improvements. 2K called it an updated edition that “breathes new life into the co-op shooter-looter that started it all.”

The base game is a co-op shooter-looter set on Pandora, where players choose among four mercenaries with distinct RPG skills, as described on 2K’s game page. The package’s appeal depends partly on whether the bundled add-ons and refinements matter to you; it does not change the identity of the original game.
Is it worth playing for newcomers or returning players?
For newcomers
The edition is a straightforward way to play the original Borderlands with its four add-on packs and the listed visual and quality-of-life updates in one package. It is most appealing if you want the first game’s co-op shooter-looter loop and are comfortable with a game that critics still found technically imperfect in places.
Rank #3
- Includes all four add-on packs released to date (on disc), as well as fold-out gameworld map
- Intense combination of FPS and RPG gameplay with Borderlands' random gun generator provides endless weapon variety
- Tear through the relentless monsters of Pandora with a crew of up to 3 of your friends in multiple modes including split-screen co-op
- Get behind the wheel of and engage in intense vehicle-to-vehicle combat
- Online multiplayer support for up to 4 players
For returning players
The case is stronger if you missed the add-on packs or want to revisit the game with its upgrades. If you already played the original and its content, reviewers’ reservations about limited added value are worth weighing: the refresh may make a return more convenient, but the review record does not suggest a substantially different game.
