Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere Roleplaying Game begins with The Stormlight Archive, but it is designed to reach beyond Stormlight and Roshar. Its first core books and adventure focus on Roshar; the rules are intended to support stories on any Cosmere world, with Mistborn presented as a planned expansion. That is a statement about setting breadth—not evidence that the game is already larger than Stormlight in books, play options, or release schedule.
What is Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere RPG?
The Cosmere RPG is an original tabletop roleplaying game developed by Brotherwise Games with Dragonsteel. Players collaboratively create a story, taking on characters in the Cosmere rather than playing a video game adaptation of the novels. The project team said it wanted a system that could capture the scope and tone of the setting, rather than adapting an existing ruleset; that design rationale appears in the official campaign FAQ.
The first line of books is built around The Stormlight Archive and its world, Roshar. The broader promise is that the underlying game can support adventures elsewhere in the Cosmere. The campaign describes an expansion from Stormlight to Mistborn and, ultimately, the whole shared universe. That is the intended direction, not a claim that every setting or companion book is available now.
What books do you need to play the Cosmere RPG?
The Stormlight Handbook is the foundational rules book. The official Stormlight RPG sample describes using it alongside either an adventure or the Stormlight World Guide. Those books serve different purposes:

The Handbook is the core purchase; the World Guide and adventure add reference and play material rather than replacing the rules. Miniatures and other accessories are optional, not prerequisites. For the physical book, “Cosmere RPG Stormlight Handbook” is the clearest product name to check with retailers.
Does the Cosmere RPG cover Mistborn and the whole Cosmere?
The intended scope is broader than Roshar. The Handbook sample says the system is designed for adventures on any Cosmere world, while Brotherwise Games’ campaign page frames the rollout as beginning with Stormlight, expanding to Mistborn, and growing to support the Cosmere. The campaign page was last updated October 1, 2026; its expansion language should be read as a roadmap, not a release calendar.

The publisher’s news index includes a Mistborn design diary, evidence that work has moved beyond a general aspiration, but the available official material does not establish a current release date for Mistborn game books. The sample names a Mistborn Handbook, Mistborn World Guide, and Mistborn Legacy in its publication context; for present-day status, consult the publisher’s news index rather than treating those sample references as a schedule.
How the game plays and what the Stormlight line adds
Brotherwise’s February 2026 news entry describes three scene types: Combats, Endeavors, and Conversations. That structure signals that the game is meant to handle more than battles, with room for problem-solving and social scenes as well. The publisher’s November 2025 news entry calls Echoes of the Father the inaugural Stormlight RPG adventure. Stonewalkers is separately identified in the Handbook sample as the first official Stormlight adventure, so the product naming and sequence should be checked against current publisher listings rather than inferred from a single sample description.

For a group deciding where to start, the Handbook supplies the rules, the World Guide deepens the setting and adversary options, and an adventure provides a specific scenario to play. The Handbook sample identifies Stonewalkers as a levels 1–8 adventure; it does not make that level range a rule for all Cosmere RPG adventures.
Cosmere RPG availability and release timing
Availability depends on region and format. In an October 2026 fulfillment update, Brotherwise said backer fulfillment was proceeding by region and that it was delaying retail release in a country until backers there had received rewards. The update moved the US retail date for the Stormlight line from October 29 to November 12, 2026, citing additional print-run time after stronger-than-anticipated retailer orders. It warned that other regions could have later dates. Check the publisher’s latest update and a live local retailer listing before assuming a physical copy is in stock.
The same update said Wave 1 PDFs had been distributed to backers and pointed readers to free Stormlight quick-start characters. It also reported updated Spanish PDFs for core books and select materials, while some Spanish physical and PDF products remained in progress at that time. Those statements describe the status in that update, not a guarantee of current stock or localization availability. The campaign FAQ, last updated August 2024, also discussed enhanced digital versions through Fantasy Grounds or Roll20/Demiplane; confirm current platform availability with the vendors before relying on that older information.

Brotherwise Games’ Kickstarter campaign reported 55,106 backers and $15,149,874 pledged as of its October 1, 2026 update. These are crowdfunding totals for the campaign—not retail revenue, a current player count, or a measure of the RPG’s eventual size.
