What causes the error
The filename alone cannot identify one exact Brother model. Public driver records associate it with older Brother printer and label-printer packages, including packages using a Windows Driver Store path similar to:

Common causes include:
- A Brother driver installation was incomplete or damaged.
- A printer was uninstalled but its queue or startup component still references the old driver.
- Windows retained an old Driver Store package during a driver migration.
- The installed package does not match the Windows architecture or application using it.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- Windows component or storage corruption damaged related files.
- The error names a missing dependency of
brmwuni2.dll, rather than the DLL itself.
The file may have been included with older Windows driver packages, particularly legacy installations, but it is not a core Windows operating-system component.
Fix 1: Identify the Brother device and reinstall its driver
This is the primary fix.
Find the printer model
Check the printer or label printer for its model label. You can also check Windows:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.

Also read the complete error message. It may identify the executable, printer utility, or path attempting to load the file. That information can reveal whether the problem belongs to a printer queue, a Brother utility, or old startup software.

- Select your printer or label-printer model.
- Choose Windows 10 or Windows 11, as appropriate.
- Select the architecture listed for your Windows installation.
- Download the Full Driver & Software Package when available.
- If that package is not offered, download the model-specific Printer Driver or label-printer software.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Disconnect the printer if the installer requests it.
- Follow the connection instructions for USB, Wi-Fi, or network printing.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
- Print a test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
To check your Windows architecture, open Settings > System > About and read System type. A 32-bit application and a 64-bit print-driver package do not necessarily use the same binary. Do not substitute a 32-bit file merely because the filename matches.

Rebuild a stale printer queue
If reinstalling the driver does not help, remove the old queue before installing the package again.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Brother printer.
- Select Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to the Brother installer and install the driver again.
- Add the printer only when the installer requests it.
For more control on supported Windows editions:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
printmanagement.msc. - Expand Print Servers > your computer > Drivers.
- Remove an obsolete Brother driver only if no active printer uses it.
- Expand Printers and remove the stale queue.
- Restart the Print Spooler service or restart Windows.

Windows Update can provide printer-driver updates, although a model-specific Brother installer is preferable for this legacy component.

- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates, including optional driver updates when they identify the affected Brother device.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Printers and Print queues.
- Right-click the Brother device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart and test printing.
If Device Manager reports that the best driver is already installed, that does not prove that the Brother package is complete. Continue with the model-specific Brother reinstall.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a driver component after an installation or update. Do not restore the file automatically.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
BRMWUNI2.DLL, a Brother installer, or the printer package. - Open the detection details.
- Confirm the original path, detection name, and associated installer.
- If the file did not come from a Brother installation, leave it quarantined.
- If the detection is confidently a false positive, reinstall the driver from Brother instead of restoring an isolated DLL.
- Run a full scan if the file appeared in an unexpected application folder.
A file in a Brother Driver Store directory is more consistent with a printer-driver installation than a copy in a random downloads or game directory. Path alone is not proof of safety, so verify the installer and digital signature where available.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows reports broader system-file corruption, or when the error references a protected Windows path. They are fallback repairs, not guaranteed replacements for a missing third-party Brother payload.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Brother driver if the DLL error remains.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can provide repair files for the Windows component store. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test the printer. If it reports that it could not repair some files, review the result and repeat the Brother driver installation rather than copying a DLL manually.

Fix 5: Check the application, dependency, and file path
A “module could not be found” message does not always mean that brmwuni2.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the rendering component.
Check the message for:
- The executable that failed.
- The full path named in the error.
- Whether the failure occurs when printing, at sign-in, or during startup.
- Whether a Brother utility or old printer queue was recently removed.
- Whether the printer is still connected and required.
If the file exists but Windows says it is “not designed to run on Windows,” suspect corruption, an incomplete package, wrong architecture, or a tampered file. Reinstall the complete Brother package rather than replacing only the DLL.

If the error appears at startup and no Brother printer remains:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall obsolete Brother software.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Remove unused Brother queues.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps and disable an obsolete Brother startup entry if identified.
- Check Task Scheduler for clearly identified remnants of removed Brother software.
- Restart Windows.
Why regsvr32 usually is not the answer
Do not run:
regsvr32 brmwuni2.dll
unless a specific Brother application or administrator document explicitly requires registration. regsvr32 is intended for self-registering DLL or OCX components, commonly COM components. A printer rendering plug-in is normally loaded by the print-driver system and is not necessarily self-registering.
Running the command may produce an error such as a missing entry point or indicate that the module was loaded but could not be registered. That does not repair the printer driver. Install the complete package instead.

Avoid DLL download sites, registry cleaners, and copied files from another computer. A loose replacement can have the wrong architecture, incompatible metadata, missing dependencies, or malicious modifications. It may also mask the real problem while leaving the Brother queue and Driver Store package broken.
Do not copy the file into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not place it beside an unrelated application executable. The safe sources are the official Brother model-specific installer and Windows Update. If you no longer own the Brother device, remove the obsolete software and printer queue instead of restoring the file.
If the error still persists
Collect these details before escalating:
- Exact Brother model.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and architecture.
- Complete error text.
- Executable or path named by the message.
- Whether the printer is still installed.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined the file.
- Results from DISM and SFC.
- Whether the error occurs during printing, startup, or application launch.
If the correct Brother package is installed but the error continues, remove the stale queue and driver package again, check for a missing dependency, and run a full security scan. System Restore is appropriate only when the problem began after a known change and a suitable restore point exists; it is not a guaranteed replacement for a missing Brother driver payload.

Is brmwuni2.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with a Brother printer-driver rendering pipeline. It may appear in a Windows Driver Store directory because Windows stages printer drivers there, but that does not make it a core Windows DLL.
