What nlsdata0022.dll is
nlsdata0022.dll is a Microsoft Windows system DLL associated with the Microsoft Neutral Natural Language Server Data and Code component. Public file inventories identify Microsoft Corporation as its publisher and associate it with the Microsoft Windows Operating System.
The file appears to support Windows language and locale services. A public technical report lists an export named LangDataCall, but no COM type library or registration functions. That makes it a normal runtime component, not an ActiveX control that should routinely be registered with regsvr32.

The strongest public evidence places this file in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1-era system installations. A current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should not be repaired by copying an old version into a system folder. If a modern application requests it, first determine whether the request comes from an old program, a damaged Windows component, an application-local copy or unwanted software.

Error messages you may see
Common variants include:
- “The program can’t start because nlsdata0022.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “nlsdata0022.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading nlsdata0022.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “nlsdata0022.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Cannot register nlsdata0022.dll.”
The wording does not identify the cause by itself. The file may have been corrupted, deleted, quarantined by antivirus software, affected by a failed update, or requested by an old application that is no longer compatible with the installed Windows version.
Fix nlsdata0022.dll in order
Start with the first fix and test the affected program after each major step.
1. Install Windows updates and restart
A pending servicing update can leave system files incomplete or make an older application fail against the current component store.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Press
Win+Ito open Settings. - Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not explicitly require a restart.
- Open the application that produced the error.
If the error returns, continue with component repair. Do not start by downloading the DLL.
2. Repair Windows with DISM and System File Checker
Microsoft’s supported sequence is to repair the Windows component store with DISM, then use SFC to replace missing or damaged protected files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It can appear stalled for a while.
- When the command completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports either that it found no integrity violations or that it found and repaired corrupted files. If SFC says it could not repair some files, do not copy a replacement from a download site. Continue to the log and recovery steps below.
Manually hunting through Windows versions and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies; repair actions are performed by the full version, and it is not required for Microsoft’s built-in repair process.

Antivirus protection can remove or quarantine a file after a detection, including a false positive. Check the record before restoring anything.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
nlsdata0022.dll. - Expand the event and inspect the original path, detection name and action.
Restore the file only when the original path is clearly a Windows system location, the surrounding installation is trustworthy and the detection is confidently identified as a false positive. If the alert remains active, do not blindly choose Allow on device. Update Defender, run a full scan and consider a Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
If the file was removed from an application folder rather than a Windows folder, repair or reinstall that application from its official installer instead.
4. Check where the file is being requested
The full path in the error is important. A request from a Windows directory points toward component repair. A request from an application directory points toward that application.
Check these locations in File Explorer:
%windir%System32
%windir%SysWOW64
On 64-bit Windows:
System32normally contains native 64-bit system files.SysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system files.
The names are counterintuitive, so do not put a 32-bit file into System32 merely because the folder name sounds correct. Do not copy the same DLL into both directories.
If nlsdata0022.dll exists, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when available. A missing signature, an unexpected publisher or an application directory containing an unexplained copy deserves further investigation rather than manual replacement.

5. Repair the application named in the error
If only one older program or game reports the error, the application may have a damaged private copy or may be requesting a legacy Windows component incorrectly.
First try the program’s own repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if present.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If it still fails, return to the same screen and select Reset, if available.
For a traditional desktop application:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and then Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Change, Repair or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall it.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the developer’s original installer or launcher.
For a game, use the launcher’s file-verification or repair feature when available. If the installer is old, check whether the developer provides a version compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11.
There is no verified evidence tying this filename to one particular game, driver package or middleware product. Reinstalling the named application is definitive only when the error points to an application-local copy.
6. Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL
A message that says “Cannot register nlsdata0022.dll” often leads users to try:
regsvr32 nlsdata0022.dll
That is not an appropriate routine repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that implement self-registration, normally through an exported DllRegisterServer function. The public technical report for nlsdata0022.dll lists LangDataCall, not DllRegisterServer or DllUnregisterServer.
Use DISM, SFC or the relevant application repair process instead. Registering an ordinary Windows data or runtime DLL will not recreate a missing component dependency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Investigate a related driver only when the error identifies one
There is no established evidence that nlsdata0022.dll belongs to a particular hardware driver. Do not reinstall drivers simply because the error occurs while launching an application.
If the error names a capture device, printer, audio device or other hardware component, update that device through its manufacturer’s official support channel:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category matching the hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a verified package supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If the device has a warning icon, open Properties and read the Device status message before changing anything. A driver update cannot replace a missing Windows language component.
Finding which of dozens of installed drivers is stale can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing the drivers it identifies; driver installation is handled by the full version, and the hardware manufacturer’s package remains the preferred source when the exact device is known.
8. Check optional Windows features only when the program requires one
Windows Features is not a general repair tool for this DLL, and enabling random features will not recreate it. Use it only when the affected application specifically requires an older Windows component.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the feature named in the application’s documentation.
- Enable it if required.
- Select OK and restart if prompted.
Do not enable legacy components solely because nlsdata0022.dll is missing.
9. Use System Restore for a recent failure
System Restore can roll back system files, drivers and settings without removing personal documents. It is useful when the error began after an update, installation or system change and a suitable restore point exists.

Read the SFC repair details
If SFC reports unrepaired files:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
- Open
sfcdetails.txtfrom the desktop. - Look for entries involving
nlsdata0022.dllor related component failures.
The log can show whether SFC found the file, could not obtain a repair source or encountered broader corruption.
Consider storage or installation damage
Back up important files if DISM and SFC repeatedly fail. Disk corruption, an interrupted servicing operation or a damaged Windows installation may require deeper repair.
For a current Windows installation, use Microsoft’s available Windows recovery or repair-install options before considering a clean installation. Preserve personal data and application installers first. A clean installation should be a last resort, not the first response to a single DLL message.
Identify the requesting process
If DISM and SFC complete successfully but the error continues, record:

Open Event Viewer with Win+R, enter eventvwr.msc, and inspect Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the failure time. A successful SFC result does not prove that the application itself is healthy. The named DLL may be a symptom of another missing dependency.
What not to do
- Do not download
nlsdata0022.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy an unverified file into
System32,SysWOW64or an application folder. - Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit builds.
- Do not run
regsvr32on this file as a routine fix. - Do not assume Visual C++, DirectX or .NET is responsible without application-specific evidence.
- Do not disable antivirus protection to force an unknown DLL into Windows.
- Do not assume a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 system should contain a particular legacy build.
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture or build, fail signature checks and leave the original component-store problem untouched. The safe sources are Windows Update, Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC repair tools, System Restore, Windows recovery, and the official installer for the application that reports the error.
FAQ
Is nlsdata0022.dll a Windows file?
Yes. Public inventories identify it as a Microsoft Windows component named “Microsoft Neutral Natural Language Server Data and Code,” associated with language and locale functionality.
Which Windows versions contain it?
Public evidence reports variants from Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1-era installations. These inventories do not establish that every Windows installation contains the file or that a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 build should have it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I put it in System32?
No. Let Windows repair the component. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit files and SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit files, but the correct location depends on the Windows build and component architecture.
Will Visual C++, DirectX or .NET fix it?
There is no verified standalone runtime package for this filename. Install or repair those runtimes only when the affected application explicitly requires them.
What if the error appears after antivirus removal?
Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore only a confidently identified false positive from a trustworthy original path. Otherwise, scan the system and repair Windows through DISM and SFC.
When should I reinstall Windows?
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, application repair and System Restore first. Consider a Windows repair installation or reinstallation only when the installation remains damaged, recovery tools cannot repair it, or repeated system failures affect more than this one file.
