Do not download this DLL from a random file website and copy it into System32. That can introduce malware, install the wrong architecture, leave dependent files missing, and fail to repair the actual driver registration.

Why the error appears
The most likely causes are:
- A Brother driver was only partly removed.
- The driver package became damaged.
- Windows was upgraded and rejected an old driver.
- The wrong Brother model or architecture package was installed.
- Security software quarantined the file.
- An old x86 driver is being used on modern 64-bit Windows.
- A dependent driver file or print component is missing.
- Windows has broader component or disk corruption.
If the error appears when printing, opening printer properties, or starting the print spooler, the Brother driver is the primary suspect. If it appears when an unrelated program starts, check which application is actually requesting the file before assuming that application needs a DLL downloaded separately.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the Brother printer driver
This is the best first repair for most brohl01a.dll errors.
1. Identify the printer and Windows architecture
Check the printer’s label or its existing Windows entry for the exact model. Do not rely only on “Brother laser printer” or a similar description.
To check Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
Most current systems use 64-bit Windows. An old Brother driver associated with brohl01a.dll may belong to an x86, or 32-bit, driver generation. Installing a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit driver environment does not make the driver compatible.
2. Remove the printer
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Brother printer.
- Click Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
If Windows says the printer is busy, cancel all print jobs first:
- Open the printer’s queue.
- Select Cancel all.
- Return to the printer entry and remove it.
3. Remove the old driver package
Press Windows + R, enter:
printui /s /t2
Press Enter.
The Print Server Properties window opens.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Find the old Brother driver.
- Select it.
- Click Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package if that option appears.
- Confirm the removal.
If Windows reports that the driver is in use:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Stop.
- Return to Print Server Properties and remove the driver.
- Return to Services.
- Right-click Print Spooler and select Start.
Restart Windows after removing the package.
4. Install the correct replacement
Use Brother’s official support page for the exact printer model. If Brother no longer offers a current package for that model, use Windows’ built-in driver or Windows Update.
Do not select a driver merely because its name contains “Brother” or because it is intended for a similar HL-series printer. Select the exact model whenever possible.

After installation:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Brother printer.
- Choose Printer properties.
- Select Print Test Page.
The repair worked if the test page prints without the brohl01a.dll message and the printer properties open normally. If the error returns immediately, remove every unused Brother driver entry from Print Server Properties, restart Windows, and repeat the installation with a clean model-specific package.
Manually comparing old driver versions and determining which of several installed packages is stale can take longer than the repair itself. Fix 2: Use Windows Update and the built-in printer driver
For an old or discontinued Brother printer, Windows’ built-in driver may be safer than forcing an obsolete package onto Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Brother identifies the HL-1440 as discontinued and directs users toward a built-in Windows driver or a driver supplied through Windows Update. This is especially important when the original package was designed for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000.
Add the printer through Windows
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if it is connected.
- Restart the computer.
- Turn on the printer.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Click Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches.
- Select the Brother printer when it appears.
- Follow the installation prompts.
If the printer does not appear:
- Select Add manually.
- Choose the appropriate connection method.
- Select the closest exact model from Windows’ driver list.
- Allow Windows Update to retrieve additional printer drivers if offered.
Print a test page after setup. If the Windows driver works but advanced Brother features are unavailable, that is expected with some built-in drivers. Basic printing is usually preferable to an incompatible legacy package that repeatedly produces DLL errors.

Security software can remove a driver file if it is damaged, altered, or detected as unsafe.
To check Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
brohl01a.dllor the Brother printer package.
Do not immediately choose Allow on device. First confirm that:
- The file came from a genuine Brother driver package.
- The package was downloaded from Brother’s official support system.
- The publisher and digital signature identify Brother where applicable.

Fix 4: Resolve an old 32-bit driver on 64-bit Windows
The historical evidence for brohl01a.dll points to an old Windows NT x86 driver family. Modern Windows installations are commonly 64-bit, and 64-bit Windows cannot simply use every 32-bit kernel-mode or print component.
Symptoms of an architecture problem include:
- The driver installs but the printer never becomes ready.
- Windows says the driver is not compatible.
- The DLL exists but cannot be loaded.
- The error returns after every restart.
- Printing works from one application but not another.
- The printer disappears after the spooler restarts.
The correct response is not to copy the 32-bit DLL into C:WindowsSystem32. Instead:
- Remove the old driver with
printui /s /t2. - Restart Windows.
- Check the exact Brother model.
- Install a driver that explicitly supports the installed Windows architecture.
- If no compatible Brother package exists, use the Windows built-in driver.
- If the printer cannot work with the available architecture, use the printer with a supported older Windows environment or replace it.
Installing a legacy DLL does not convert a 32-bit driver into a supported 64-bit driver.
Fix 5: Check the driver through Device Manager
Printer software does not always appear in Device Manager in the same way as display or audio drivers, but Device Manager can reveal a broader device or USB problem.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers or Print queues.
- Look for the Brother device.
- Also check Universal Serial Bus controllers if the printer is connected by USB.
- Right-click a relevant Brother entry.
- Select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
If Windows identifies a problem:
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Uninstall Device if the entry is clearly the old Brother device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver software.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the correct printer package.
Do not uninstall unrelated devices merely because they have a warning icon. Confirm that the entry belongs to the Brother printer before removing it.
Fix 6: Repair general Windows components
brohl01a.dll is not a protected Windows system file, so System File Checker is not normally the direct repair. However, Windows component corruption can interfere with driver installation, printing services, or system updates.

Install pending Windows updates and restart first. Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands finish, then reinstall the Brother driver.

DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not supply a missing third-party Brother driver, so do not treat a clean SFC result as proof that the printer package is intact.

A common suggestion is:
regsvr32 brohl01a.dll
That is not a general DLL repair command.
regsvr32 works with DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Printer-driver modules are normally installed through an INF-based driver package and loaded by the Windows print subsystem. They are not normally repaired by registering the DLL manually.
Possible results include:
- The module was loaded but the entry point was not found.
- The file is not compatible with the version of Windows.
- Another dependency is missing.
- The command appears to succeed but printing remains broken.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor’s documented installation instructions specifically require it. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
Why copying the DLL is unsafe
Copying brohl01a.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or beside another application is the wrong repair because:
- The file may be malicious.
- The file may be for another Brother model.
- The file may be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Required companion files may still be absent.
- The print driver may remain incorrectly registered.
- Windows may load a rogue copy from an unsafe directory.

If the error remains after reinstalling
Work through these checks:
- Remove all unused Brother printers from Printers & scanners.
- Open
printui /s /t2. - Remove obsolete Brother driver packages.
- Stop and restart the Print Spooler service.
- Restart Windows.
- Install only the exact model-specific package or built-in Windows driver.
- Check Windows Security Protection History.
- Confirm the printer’s USB cable, network connection, and power.
- Print a test page from Printer properties.
- Test from a second Windows application.
If the printer is an older model with no compatible driver for the installed Windows architecture, the remaining choices are a supported built-in driver, a supported older Windows environment, or replacement hardware. No manually downloaded copy of brohl01a.dll can solve an incompatible driver architecture.
