Brotato Crashing on PC? 8 Troubleshooting Steps to Try

Match a Brotato crash to the right next step: isolate Workshop mods, check AMD black-screen guidance, reduce effects, or collect the Godot log—with care around older branch and save instructions.

If Brotato crashes on PC, start with the symptom: remove Workshop mods for crashes after launch or during a run; use the AMD-specific driver steps for an AMD black screen; and reserve older Steam branches or save-file edits for the cases they were written for. These are eight documented steps to try, not guaranteed fixes. Several come from Blobfish’s update 1.1/DLC troubleshooting post, published September 29, 2022 and last edited March 12, 2025, so confirm that its branch and file instructions still match your Steam installation.

Before changing anything: check the symptom and PC baseline

Note when the failure occurs: before the menu, after the Godot splash screen, during a run, or as a black screen. Also note whether you use Workshop mods and whether your graphics card is AMD. Those details determine which steps apply.

Steam lists Brotato’s minimum Windows requirements as Windows 7 or later, a 2 GHz processor, 4 GB RAM, graphics with 128 MB and OpenGL 3+, and 200 MB of available storage. These are the game’s listed minimums, not a guarantee that every configuration will run without crashes. Steam separately says its client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024; that is a Steam-client requirement, distinct from Brotato’s listed minimum operating system. Steam’s Brotato listing provides the current requirements.

Eight troubleshooting steps, matched to the failure

1. Unsubscribe from Workshop mods

Try this first if the game crashes after the Godot splash screen, glitches during a run, or you have installed mods. Blobfish’s pinned Steam post recommends unsubscribing from all Brotato mods through the game’s Steam Workshop page, then relaunching. If the crash stops, a mod was implicated; if it continues, move on. This is an isolation step, not proof that mods are always the cause. Blobfish’s troubleshooting post is specifically about update 1.1/DLC issues.

2. Reinstall after the mod check

If the problem remains with mods removed, Blobfish’s post suggests uninstalling and reinstalling the game. A reinstall is not guaranteed to fix a crash. If it persists, report it using Brotato’s in-game F8 bug-report button or the Discord channel named #pc-bug-reports, as the developer’s post directs.

3. Try the developer’s Steam app ID file instruction

For crashes on a no-mod installation, Blobfish’s update 1.1/DLC post says to create a plain-text file named steam_appid.txt beside Brotato.exe, put 1942280 in the file, save it, and restart the game. This is a specific developer instruction from that issue post, not a general Windows repair procedure. If you cannot locate the game executable or the instruction does not fit your installation, do not guess at another folder or file.

4. Check for the named compatibility branch

If a no-mod crash continues after the previous step, the same Blobfish post names the Steam branch v1.1.0.0-compat. In Steam, open Brotato’s Properties and check the available beta/branch options. Select it only if it is currently offered and the old guidance matches your issue; branch names and availability can change. If it is absent, do not substitute a different branch—report the crash instead.

5. Consider the older gles2 branch only if the game has never worked

A Steam community troubleshooting reply suggests trying a gles2 branch for a game that has never worked, explaining that it uses OpenGL 2 rather than OpenGL 3 and might help older graphics cards without OpenGL 3 support. This is older, community-provided guidance—not a developer recommendation or a fit for every graphics card or current Steam build. Check whether the option exists in Steam’s current branch list before relying on it. The community troubleshooting reply dates to December 6, 2023.

6. For an AMD black screen, follow the targeted driver path

Blobfish’s post gives a separate sequence for a black screen at launch on AMD graphics: use AMD Cleanup Utility to cleanly uninstall the existing AMD graphics driver, install the newest official AMD driver, disable Image Sharpening in the driver settings, and retry. This advice is narrowly for the AMD black-screen case described by the developer; it is not a generic step for crashes on other hardware. Use AMD’s official utility and driver sources rather than third-party driver-updater tools. The steps are in Blobfish’s post.

7. Reduce selected effects if the problem looks performance-related

If the game freezes or appears to struggle during a run, a Steam community respondent suggests disabling Visual Effects, Damage Numbers, Explosions, and Screen Darkening in the game’s settings. The respondent said this “should help” when performance issues may be involved; no benchmark or guaranteed improvement was reported. Treat it as a reversible settings test, not a confirmed crash fix. The community reply is dated December 6, 2023.

8. Capture the log, then use the black-screen recovery only when relevant

For a repeat crash, a Steam community reply points Windows players to %APPDATA%Brotatologsgodot.log. Open the log and include its last lines in a support report; they may help explain what happened. Blobfish also directs players to report through F8 or Discord’s #pc-bug-reports channel. Steam’s support page links to Blobfish customer support, the product website and forums, and Steam community discussions: Steam Support for Brotato.

Black screen only: Blobfish’s post also describes changing fullscreen mode through the save file. This alters user data, so back up the file before editing. Disable Steam Cloud for Brotato, then open %APPDATA%Brotato<SteamID>save_v2.json and change the fullscreen value to false. Save the file and launch the game; if it succeeds, reenable Steam Cloud. Do not use this as a routine crash step or edit the file without a backup. The instructions are tied to the developer’s update 1.1/DLC troubleshooting post, so check that they still apply before changing a current save.

Which steps are reversible, and which need extra care?

Step Best fit Reversibility and risk Age or availability caveat
Unsubscribe from mods Crash after splash screen or during a run; modded setup Reversible by resubscribing; isolates mods Developer guidance from an update 1.1/DLC issue post
Reinstall Crash continues after removing mods Game installation changes; not guaranteed to resolve the crash Developer guidance from the same older issue post
steam_appid.txt No-mod crash Adds a file beside the game executable Specific to the developer’s update 1.1/DLC instructions
v1.1.0.0-compat branch Persistent no-mod crash after the file step Changes the selected game branch Use only if currently available in Steam
gles2 branch Game has never worked; OpenGL compatibility may be an issue Changes the selected game branch Older community advice; current availability is not established
AMD driver cleanup and settings AMD black screen at launch Removes and reinstalls a graphics driver; change Image Sharpening Developer guidance for this specific AMD case
Reduce visual effects Freeze that may be performance-related Reversible in-game settings changes Community suggestion, not a measured result
Read log / edit fullscreen save value Repeat crash / black screen, respectively Reading the log is low risk; save edit can affect user data, so back it up first Save-file method is older developer guidance; use only for a black screen

When the crash continues

Include the failure point, whether mods were removed, your graphics hardware, any branch or settings changes, and the last lines of godot.log in a report. Use the in-game F8 option when available, or the developer’s Discord #pc-bug-reports channel. A specific symptom and log excerpt give support a more useful starting point than a report that only says the game crashes.
