brspl2kb.dll is a Brother Industries, Ltd printer-driver component, not a Windows system file. If Windows says brspl2kb.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the Brother printer software that installed it rather than downloading a loose DLL.
The file appears in older Brother printer and fax packages, including packages associated with models such as the HL-1230, HL-1440, HL-1450, HL-1470N, HL-1650/1670N, HL-1850/1870N, HL-2460, HL-2600CN, HL-3260N, HL-3450CN, and some MFC and FAX products. That is not a complete list, and the correct package depends on the exact model.

Before fixing the error
First determine what is actually triggering the message. Note whether it appears:

- When you print
- When opening Devices and Printers
- When launching a Brother utility
- During installation or removal of a Brother driver
- After a Windows upgrade, cleanup, restore, or antivirus alert
Also check whether the printer is still installed and needed. If the device was removed years ago and the error only appears at startup, reinstalling the DLL may preserve an obsolete startup entry. In that case, remove the orphaned Brother software and driver instead.

Check the printer model
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 10. Select the Brother printer and record its complete model name.
If the printer is not listed, check:
- The label on the printer.
- Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers.
- Any old Brother utility listed in Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Device Manager, especially Print queues, Printers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Do not use a driver for a similar-looking model. Brother packages can contain model-specific files, control panels, PPD files, and companion components that a different model cannot use.
Check the file location
If a copy of brspl2kb.dll exists, right-click it, choose Properties, and inspect:

A file inside a Brother driver directory or an old printer-driver directory is more plausible than one found in a random application folder. A copy in C:WindowsSystem32 can still be third-party because older installers sometimes placed driver files there. The directory name alone does not prove that Microsoft owns the file.
Do not assume that every file with this name is safe. Verify its location, signature, and provenance. If antivirus quarantined it, review the security product’s detection and history before restoring anything.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Brother driver package
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely solution. brspl2kb.dll normally works as part of a Brother driver package, alongside other Brother files. Replacing only the missing file can leave the driver with missing dependencies, incorrect registry entries, or incompatible driver-store metadata.
- Identify the exact Brother model.
- Open Brother Support in your browser.
- Search for that model.
- Open its Downloads or Support page.
- Select Windows 10 or Windows 11 as appropriate.
- Select the correct architecture when offered: 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Download the Full Driver & Software Package when available. If Brother only offers a model-specific printer or PCL driver, use the package intended for your device.
- Save the installer locally.
- Close open print applications.
- Run the installer and follow its connection instructions.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
- Print a test page.
For an older Brother device, the download page may show discontinued status or only older operating systems. Do not assume that a package designed for an older Windows release is compatible with every current Windows installation. Check the model’s supported operating systems and architecture first.

Remove the broken package before reinstalling
If the installer reports that a driver already exists, or the error returns after reinstalling, remove the old package first.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Brother printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
control printersand press Enter. - In the Devices and Printers window, select any printer.
- Click Print server properties on the toolbar.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the Brother driver.
- Click Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct Brother package again.
If Windows refuses to remove the package, use Brother’s own cleanup utility if one is provided for that model and failed installation. Restart after cleanup before running the full installer again.

A successful repair usually means the error no longer appears at startup or when printing, the Brother printer appears without a warning icon, and a Windows test page prints normally.
Fix 2: Use Windows’ built-in printer driver
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If Brother no longer provides a compatible driver for your current Windows release, Windows may still support basic printing through a built-in driver or Windows Update. This is often safer than forcing an old Brother DLL into a newer operating system.
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if it is connected.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches.
- Select the Brother printer if it appears.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Print a test page.
For a network printer, confirm that the printer and PC are connected to the same network. If automatic detection fails:
- Choose Add manually.
- Select the connection method.
- Enter the printer’s network address or select the appropriate port.
- Choose a Brother model driver if Windows lists one.
- If no Brother driver is available, choose a compatible built-in driver only when its supported features meet your needs.
Windows also provides a classic driver path:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Devices and Printers.
- Click Add a printer.
- Choose The printer that I want isn’t listed if necessary.
- Select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings.
- Choose the correct port.
- Select the manufacturer and model.
- If the driver is absent, click Windows Update in the driver-selection window.
- Complete the wizard and print a test page.
A built-in driver may not expose every Brother feature, including advanced finishing, fax controls, scanning integration, or model-specific settings. It can nevertheless restore basic printing without relying on the obsolete brspl2kb.dll component.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and security history
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software can quarantine an old driver file after a detection, update, or scan. It can also block a damaged installer.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
brspl2kb.dll, a Brother installer, or a printer driver. - Expand the event and inspect the file path.
- Do not restore the file if it came from an untrusted download or an unexpected directory.
- If the file came from a legitimate Brother installation, reinstall the complete Brother package instead of restoring a loose copy.
- Run a full scan after the driver is repaired.
If a third-party security product is installed, check its quarantine and event history as well. A restored file can immediately be quarantined again if the underlying package is corrupted or incompatible.
The safest response to a genuine quarantine is usually to remove the old driver and install a fresh package obtained from Brother Support. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random file repository.
Fix 4: Update or remove the driver through Device Manager
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Device Manager can repair stale driver records, although it may not contain the complete Brother software package.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Print queues and Printers.
- Look for the Brother device or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install any driver Windows finds.
- Restart Windows and test printing.
If the device is clearly orphaned or the error started after a failed uninstall:

- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the complete Brother package or add the printer with Windows’ built-in driver.
Device Manager does not always remove every printer-server package. If the error remains, use Print server properties as described earlier.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use these commands when Windows itself shows broader corruption, such as damaged built-in applications, repeated component errors, failed updates, or multiple unrelated system-file warnings. They are not the primary way to restore a third-party Brother driver DLL.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Brother driver installation.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows resources. Neither command is expected to recreate an unprotected Brother driver file.
If SFC says it found no integrity violations, that does not prove the Brother installation is intact. It only means SFC did not identify a problem in the protected Windows resources it checks.

If DISM or SFC reports an error
Restart and run the commands again from an elevated terminal. If Windows still reports component corruption, investigate Windows servicing or update problems before retrying the printer installation.
Do not copy brspl2kb.dll into system folders because SFC did not restore it. That creates a separate driver-maintenance problem rather than repairing Windows.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit, 64-bit, and ARM compatibility
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A legacy Brother package may not work correctly with the architecture of the process loading it.

- Read System type.
You may see 64-bit Windows on an x64 processor, 32-bit Windows, or an ARM-based system. Select the matching package on Brother’s download page whenever Brother provides separate choices.
Do not copy the same DLL into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit components. The names are unintuitive, and placing a third-party driver file in both locations can cause wrong-architecture loading or servicing problems.

The message “not designed to run on Windows” can indicate corruption, an incompatible architecture, or a damaged dependency. It does not by itself prove that the file is malware.

Time needed: 10–20 minutes
If the message appears at every boot but the printer is no longer used, remove the software that is trying to load the missing file.

If a startup message remains, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Startup apps, and inspect Brother-related entries. Disable an obsolete Brother startup entry only after confirming that the printer and utility are no longer needed.
Do not use regsvr32 for this driver DLL
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration behavior, such as certain COM or ActiveX components. A printer-driver DLL is normally loaded by the print system as part of its driver package.
Running:
regsvr32 brspl2kb.dll
is therefore not a recommended repair. A message saying that DllRegisterServer was not found would generally mean the DLL is not designed for self-registration. It does not mean that registering it will repair the Brother driver.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid websites offering an isolated brspl2kb.dll download. A loose file can be:
- The wrong Brother version
- Built for the wrong architecture
- Missing companion files
- Incompatible with the installed printer model
- Missing required driver-store metadata
- Modified or malicious
- Placed in a directory where Windows should not load it
Public package listings also show that different historical Brother packages contain different file sizes. There is no single file size that proves a copy is correct.
Use the complete model-specific Brother package, or Windows’ built-in printer driver when the Brother device is no longer supported. Do not use a Visual C++ redistributable, DirectX package, or .NET repair as a substitute for the Brother driver.
What caused the error

- A failed Brother installation left stale print-server records.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- The wrong model or Windows architecture was installed.
- A disk cleanup or system-image restore removed companion files.
- An old Brother utility still launches after the printer was removed.
- The printer is obsolete and no longer has a compatible current driver.
- Windows has broader component corruption.
System Restore is justified when the error began immediately after a recent driver installation, Windows change, or system cleanup and other repair methods failed. Choose a restore point from before the change, and understand that System Restore can also roll back recently installed applications and drivers. It should not be the first choice for a long-disconnected printer.

Is brspl2kb.dll part of Windows?
