The 60-second answer
hpqmfc09.dll is not a normal Windows system file. It is an HP application component named CUE MFC Extension DLL, associated with hp digital imaging – hp all-in-one series software from Hewlett-Packard Co.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The catalogued file is a 32-bit DLL, version 82.0.130.0, with a recorded size of about 0.15 MB. It normally belongs inside an HP Digital Imaging installation, not in a random Windows folder.
The safest and most likely fix is:
- Identify the HP printer or scanner software that is failing.
- Uninstall the damaged HP package.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the correct software for the exact printer model from HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page.
- Install the full-feature package, HP Easy Start, or the HP application recommended for that model.
Do not download hpqmfc09.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32. That can install the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or malware while leaving the damaged HP installation unresolved.

The message means that an HP program attempted to load this DLL and Windows could not complete the request. Common causes include:
- The HP Digital Imaging installation is incomplete or damaged.
- A cleanup utility removed an HP file.
- HP software was partially uninstalled.
- An antivirus product quarantined the file.
- A Windows upgrade exposed an incompatibility in older HP software.
- A required dependency is missing.
- An old HP startup entry still runs after the printer software was removed.
- The HP software and the installed printer driver no longer match.
The exact cause cannot be determined from hpqmfc09.dll alone. Pay attention to when the message appears. If it occurs when opening HP scanning software or Printer Assistant, repair that HP installation first. If it appears at every startup after you removed an HP printer, an obsolete startup entry or incomplete uninstall is more likely.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete HP printer package
This is the primary repair and should be attempted before copying files, changing the registry, or running DLL utilities.
Step 1: Disconnect the printer
If the printer is connected by USB, unplug the USB cable temporarily. Leave the printer powered on if it uses Wi-Fi, but do not start the installation until the HP installer requests a connection.
Disconnecting USB prevents Windows from immediately reusing an incomplete driver while you remove the old package.
Step 2: Remove the HP software
In Windows 11:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the printer model, HP Printer Assistant, HP Digital Imaging, or another HP software entry.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
In Windows 10:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Apps and Features.
- Select the HP printer software.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the wizard.
Also check Control Panel if the package does not appear in Settings:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Remove HP printer, scanner, imaging, and Printer Assistant entries related to the affected device.
Do not remove unrelated HP software unless you know it belongs to the same printer or scanner.
Step 3: Remove an old printer entry if necessary
After uninstalling the software:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices in Windows 11, or Devices in Windows 10.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select the old HP printer.
- Choose Remove.
You can also open Control Panel → Devices and Printers, right-click the stale printer, and select Remove device.
If multiple copies of the same printer exist, remove entries that clearly belong to the old installation. Do not remove a printer you still use with a different working driver unless you are intentionally rebuilding that installation.

Step 4: Restart Windows
Restart instead of shutting down and turning the computer back on. A restart clears installer locks and unloads old HP components from memory.
Step 5: Download the correct HP package
Open HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page manually. Search for the exact printer model, including its series number where shown.
Select the installed Windows version and choose the recommended package. Depending on the model, HP may offer:
- A Full Feature Driver and Software package.
- HP Easy Start.
- The HP app.
- A basic driver or Windows scanning solution.
Use the newest package HP lists for that exact device and Windows version. Do not choose a package for a similar-looking model.
Step 6: Install only when prompted
Run the HP installer. If Windows displays a permission prompt, select Yes. Connect the USB cable only when the installer requests it. For a network printer, select the correct Wi-Fi or wired connection during setup.
When installation finishes, test the program that previously displayed the error. Open HP Printer Assistant, HP scanning software, or the printer control panel and start a test print or scan.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The HP program opens without the DLL message.
- The printer appears once, rather than as several stale copies.
- Printing works.
- Scanning works if the device supports it.
- The error does not return after restarting Windows.
If the same error appears immediately after reinstalling, continue with the next sections. The problem may involve antivirus quarantine, an unsupported legacy package, or a missing dependency.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an HP file. Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that the alert refers to the HP installation and that the file was located inside the expected HP program directory.
Check Protection History
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open an entry related to
hpqmfc09.dll, if present. - Note the detected path, threat name, and action.
If the file was found under an HP Digital Imaging folder and you have confirmed that the HP software came from HP, you can review the available action. Microsoft provides a Restore action for some quarantined files. Restore only when you are confident that the detection is a false positive.
Reinstalling the complete HP package is usually safer than restoring a standalone file. The HP installer can replace the DLL together with its matching configuration and dependencies.
If the detection identifies malware rather than a potentially unwanted or mistaken detection, do not restore it. Remove the affected software and run a full Windows Security scan.

Legacy HP all-in-one and scanner software may have limited support on newer Windows releases. A Windows upgrade can leave the old program installed even though some of its components no longer function correctly.

- Weight: 10.450 lbs
Find the exact printer model:
- Check the label on the printer.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer and review its name.
- Look at the original purchase or setup records if the model is unclear.
Then check HP’s support page for that model and the installed Windows version. If HP offers a newer full-feature package, install it after removing the damaged package.
If HP no longer offers the original imaging software, use the newest supported option instead. Depending on the device, that may be:
- A basic HP printer driver.
- Windows printing support.
- Windows Image Acquisition, or WIA, for scanning.
- HP Easy Start.
- The HP app.
- A supported driver supplied through Windows Update.
A basic driver may restore printing but not every feature of the old HP imaging suite. If the original scanner software has no supported replacement, the old interface may not be recoverable on the current Windows version.

Fix 4: Update or reinstall the printer driver
A broken driver can leave an HP application unable to communicate with the device, even when the missing DLL itself has been restored.
Reinstall through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Locate the affected HP device.
- Right-click it and choose Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when you are rebuilding the complete HP installation.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver from the exact HP model page.
Do not use a driver for a similar model simply because its name looks close. The correct package depends on the printer model and Windows version.
Manually finding the right driver can mean checking several model pages, Windows editions, connection types, and package names. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full version performs the driver installation, but reinstalling the correct HP package remains the definitive fix for an HP-specific DLL.
Test the device
After installation:
- Open Settings → Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Choose Print a test page, if available.
- Open the HP scanning program or Windows Scan.
- Start a test scan.
If the driver installs but the HP imaging program still reports hpqmfc09.dll, remove the remaining HP software and repeat the full-package installation rather than installing the DLL separately.

Fix 5: Determine whether a dependency is missing
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL itself is absent. Windows can show that message when a dependency required by the named DLL cannot be loaded.
Look at the complete error and the file path. If another filename appears, that filename may identify the missing component.
Common Microsoft runtime names include:
mfc*.dllmsvcp*.dllvcruntime*.dll
hpqmfc09.dll itself is an HP-named application DLL, so a Visual C++ problem is not the primary explanation for its absence. Install a Visual C++ Redistributable only when the diagnostic identifies a missing Microsoft runtime or the HP installer explicitly requires one.
Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable documentation and choose the architecture that matches the application. Because this HP component is catalogued as 32-bit, an old HP application may require the x86 runtime even on 64-bit Windows. Different Visual C++ generations can coexist.
Do not download an individual mfc, msvcp, or vcruntime DLL from an unofficial file site.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when several Windows programs have problems, Windows files appear damaged, or the error began after a failed update. They repair Windows components, not necessarily a third-party HP DLL.

- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if prompted.
- Enter:

- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows system files were not found to be damaged.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the HP program again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Review the Microsoft repair guidance, restart, and run the repair sequence again if appropriate.
Do not expect SFC to recreate a missing HP application file. If Windows is healthy but the HP DLL remains absent, reinstall the HP software.

Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems and show its findings; its full version performs repairs, but reinstalling the HP package remains the definitive solution for this application DLL.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows change, cleanup operation, or other software installation.
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs without changing personal documents. It may remove a recently installed driver or application, so review the affected-program list first.
If the restore does not resolve the problem, reinstall the correct HP package afterward. Do not use System Restore as a substitute for checking HP model compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould you use regsvr32?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general tool for restoring missing files or repairing every DLL error.
Running:
regsvr32 hpqmfc09.dll
may produce “DllRegisterServer was not found.” That message does not prove that the file is corrupt. It may simply mean that this HP application DLL is not a self-registering COM component.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that particular DLL and provides the correct architecture and path. For this file, reinstalling the HP application is the normal repair.
Why copying the DLL to System32 is unsafe
Do not treat System32 as a universal destination for third-party DLLs. On 64-bit Windows, it primarily contains 64-bit system components, while this catalogued HP file is 32-bit.
Copying a 32-bit HP DLL into a system directory can:
- Leave the original HP installation broken.
- Create a version conflict.
- Put an application file in the wrong directory.
- Cause Windows or another program to load an unintended copy.
- Fail because another dependency is still missing.
A 64-bit replacement cannot repair a 32-bit application that needs its matching 32-bit component. Manual copying is reasonable only when recovering the exact file from the original HP installer or a trusted backup, with the same version and architecture.
If the error appears at every startup
If you no longer use the HP printer:
- Uninstall the related HP software from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove the old printer from Printers & scanners.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Disable an obsolete HP startup entry if it clearly belongs to the removed software.
Do not disable unknown startup items merely because they have a short name. If several programs begin failing, investigate Windows corruption, malware, disk problems, or a broader software issue instead.

When to run a malware check
The file’s location matters, but location alone does not prove that a file is safe or malicious. A copy inside the expected HP Digital Imaging directory is more consistent with the associated software than a copy in an unrelated temporary folder, but verify the actual file and its source.

Frequently asked questions
Is hpqmfc09.dll part of Windows?
No public evidence identifies it as a Windows system DLL. It is associated with HP Digital Imaging and HP all-in-one printer and scanner software.
Is hpqmfc09.dll a Visual C++ file?
No. Its name and description identify it as an HP application component. A related Visual C++ dependency is possible only when a diagnostic specifically names a Microsoft runtime file.
Is hpqmfc09.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The catalogued build is 32-bit. Do not replace it with a 64-bit DLL.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which HP printer uses this file?
The available records associate it with hp digital imaging – hp all-in-one series, but they do not verify the exact printer models or installer releases. Identify your model and use its official HP support page.
Should I download hpqmfc09.dll separately?
No. A random download may contain malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture. Reinstall the complete HP package instead.
Should I restore it from antivirus quarantine?
Only after confirming the file belongs to a trusted HP installation and the detection is a false positive. Reinstalling from HP is safer than restoring an unverified standalone DLL.
Can I register it with regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose the required registration entry point. It is not a missing-file installer.
What if the HP software is no longer supported?
Check the exact model’s HP support page. Use the newest supported package, a basic driver, Windows printing support, or Windows scanning support where available. Some legacy imaging features may not have a modern replacement.
Final diagnostic checklist
Before seeking further help, record:
- The exact error message.
- The HP printer or scanner model.
- Whether Windows 10 or Windows 11 is installed.
- The HP program that fails.
- Whether the error appears at startup or only when opening the program.
- The path where Windows expected
hpqmfc09.dll. - Whether the issue began after an update, uninstall, cleanup, backup restore, or antivirus action.
- Whether reinstalling the complete HP package changed the message.
For this file, the correct repair is usually to restore the owning HP installation, not to obtain an isolated DLL.
