There is no reliable evidence that this file belongs to Windows itself. A message naming it usually points to Brother printer software, a print-driver installation process, a Brother utility, or a stale startup entry left after removing the printer.
Error messages you may see
Reported messages include:
- “The program can’t start because BRURD23A.DLL is missing from your computer.”
- “BRURD23A.DLL was not found.”
- “Error loading BRURD23A.DLL. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load BRURD23A.DLL.”
These are reported error strings, not confirmed universal Windows messages. Record the exact wording before closing the dialog. Also note the executable named in the message, if one is shown.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the Brother package
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus the download time
This is the most likely fix because printer drivers are installed as complete packages. Replacing one DLL does not repair the package, its dependencies, or its driver-store entries.
Remove Brother software with Brother Utilities
- Make sure you know the exact Brother printer model.
- Close printing, scanning, and Brother utility windows.
- Open Start and search for Brother Utilities.
- Open Brother Utilities.
- Select your printer model if prompted.
- Open the Tools section.
- Choose the option to uninstall or remove the Brother software.
- Follow the prompts until the removal finishes.
If Brother Utilities is not installed or the uninstall fails, use Brother’s official Brother Uninstall Tool for your model and Windows version. The tool is preferable to manually deleting individual DLLs.
- Restart Windows, even if the uninstall does not request it.
- Open Brother’s official support or driver-download page.
- Search for the exact printer model, not just “Brother printer.”
- Select your Windows edition and architecture when asked.
- Download the Full Driver & Software Package unless Brother’s model page specifically directs you to a different package.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it, particularly if it uses USB.
- Complete setup and print a test page.
How to tell whether it worked
The original error should no longer appear when Windows starts or when you open Brother software. Printing should also work from a normal Windows application.

If the same error returns during installation, remove the package again and restart before trying the installer a second time. Confirm that the download matches the exact model and Windows version. A package for a similar Brother printer is not necessarily interchangeable.
Fix 2: Remove the driver package manually
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Use this when Brother’s normal uninstall process leaves the error behind or the printer appears duplicated in Windows.

- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Brother printer.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
control printersand press Enter. - In Devices and Printers, select Fax or Microsoft XPS Document Writer.
- Select Print server properties in the toolbar.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the Brother driver.
- Select Change Driver Settings if that button is visible.
- Select the Brother driver again and choose Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting, reinstall the model-specific Brother package from the manufacturer.
Do not delete files from C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the Driver Store by hand. Windows printer drivers are managed as packages, and deleting a single DLL can leave a broken driver registration behind.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may quarantine a Brother component after an installation, update, or repair. This is possible, but it does not prove that the quarantined file was safe.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
brurd23a.dll, Brother software, or the printer installer. - Expand the entry and read the detected path and action.
- If the file came from an official Brother installation, verify the installer’s source and digital signature before taking action.
Avoid restoring an isolated DLL as the main repair. Reinstalling a clean, complete Brother package is safer. If Microsoft Defender detects the restored file again, leave it quarantined and contact Brother support or investigate the installer rather than creating an exclusion.

After checking Protection history, remove the Brother package and reinstall it from the official Brother support page.
Fix 4: Update Windows and the printer driver
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
A recent Windows update or an old printer package can expose a driver mismatch. Windows Update may provide a related printer-driver update, but it is not guaranteed to provide this particular DLL.
Check Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the printer again.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers if the printer is connected by USB.
- Look for the Brother device or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Device Manager may not find the complete Brother software package. If it reports that the best driver is already installed but brurd23a.dll remains missing, use Brother’s model-specific installer instead.

Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally reconstruct a third-party Brother DLL, so use them when Windows has broader problems, such as damaged built-in applications, update failures, or multiple unrelated system errors.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Brother software and printer.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, test again after restarting. If both commands complete without resolving brurd23a.dll, return to the Brother uninstall and reinstall procedure. Repeating SFC and DISM will not replace a missing vendor DLL.

- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Brother entries or an unknown entry that appeared at the same time as the error.
- Note its name before disabling it.
- Select the entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
You can also check Settings > Apps > Startup for the same entries. For scheduled tasks:
- Open Start.
- Search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for clearly identified Brother tasks.
- Disable an obsolete Brother task only if you are certain the associated printer software has been removed.
Do not delete random registry entries or unknown scheduled tasks. If the dialog names a specific executable, record it. That executable identifies which remaining component is requesting the DLL.

Time needed: 15–30 minutes
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, software removal, or other system change, System Restore may reverse the change when a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove recently installed software or drivers. Afterward, reinstall the correct Brother package if the printer software is no longer present.

Do not register or copy this DLL manually
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It calls a registration entry point, commonly DllRegisterServer, and a printer-driver support DLL may not provide that entry point. Running it can produce another error without repairing the driver.
Do not copy brurd23a.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
That can create an architecture mismatch, bypass the Brother driver-package process, and introduce an untrusted or incompatible file. A “specified module could not be found” message can also mean that a dependency is missing even when the named DLL exists. Reinstalling the complete package addresses both possibilities.

Avoid random DLL download sites websites. A loose file may contain malware, belong to a different Brother package, have the wrong architecture, or fail because other driver files are also missing. Use Brother’s official support and driver pages, selected by the exact printer model.
