imjpcd.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows Japanese IME component, not a general-purpose runtime from Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a graphics driver. The safest repair is to reinstall Japanese language features through Windows, then use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC before considering an application repair.
What this file actually does
imjpcd.dll is associated with Microsoft’s Japanese Input Method Editor. Public file metadata describes it as a character-code dictionary component used by the Japanese IME.
Older Windows installations commonly place it in a path resembling:
C:WindowsSystem32IMEIMEJPimjpcd.dll
The exact location depends on the Windows release and installed language components. A copy under System32 is not automatically a 64-bit file. Public metadata identifies listed imjpcd.dll builds as 32-bit, and Windows can store 32-bit IME components in that directory.

“Microsoft IME 2012” is mainly an older Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 product label. It is not a current standalone runtime that you should download separately. Current Windows uses the built-in Microsoft Japanese IME, delivered as part of Windows language features and servicing.
Reported historical metadata includes these examples:
| Reported version | Architecture | Reported association |
|---|---|---|
| 15.0.9200.16384 | 32-bit | Microsoft IME 2012 |
| 15.0.9600.16384 | 32-bit | Microsoft IME 2012 |
| 10.1.7600.16385 | 32-bit | Microsoft IME |
| 10.0.18362.1 | 32-bit | Microsoft IME |
These are historical third-party metadata records, not a complete Microsoft-supported version list.
Diagnose the error before changing files
The exact wording varies by Windows and by the program showing the message. You may see:

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- “The program can’t start because imjpcd.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “imjpcd.dll was not found.”
- “The file imjpcd.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: imjpcd.dll.”
- “imjpcd.dll could not be loaded.”
- “imjpcd.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
Use the symptom to choose the starting point:
| Symptom | Most likely direction | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Japanese input no longer works anywhere | Japanese language component is missing or damaged | Reinstall Japanese |
| The error began after a Windows update or language change | Incomplete language or IME installation | Apply updates, then remove and re-add Japanese |
| One old application fails, but Japanese input works elsewhere | Application damage or compatibility problem | Repair or reinstall that application |
| Security software reported a system file | Quarantine or remediation may be involved | Inspect security history |
| The message says the file is not designed to run on Windows | Corruption, tampering, or mismatched build | Do not replace it randomly; repair Windows |
| Windows refuses to add Japanese | Edition, update, or management restriction | Check Windows edition and update policy |
There is no dependable public list of games or applications that uniquely require this file. If the message names a particular program, treat that program as part of the diagnosis rather than assuming Windows is the only problem.
Fix 1: Reinstall Japanese and Microsoft Japanese IME
This is the best first repair on Windows 10 and Windows 11 because it restores the component through Windows rather than introducing an unrelated DLL.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Time & language, then Language & region. In Windows 10, select Time & Language, then Language.
- Select Add a language.
- Search for Japanese.
- Select Japanese, choose Next, select the language features you need, and select Install.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install all available updates, and restart again.
If Japanese is already installed, remove and add it again where Windows permits:
- Open the Japanese entry under Language & region or Language.
- Select Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to the same screen and add Japanese again.
- Install pending updates and restart.
On Windows 8 or 8.1, the usual route is Control Panel > Language > Add a language > Japanese > Options. The wording and available controls differ by Windows release, so do not assume the Windows 11 Settings path applies unchanged to older systems.

Test the repair by opening a text editor and switching to the Japanese input profile. Then launch the application that reported the error. If Japanese input works but that application still fails, continue with the application-specific fix below.
If Windows cannot add Japanese, check whether the edition is Home Single Language, whether Windows Update is blocked, or whether the computer is controlled by an organization. Some Windows editions and managed devices restrict additional language installation.
Fix 2: Repair Windows component files with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when reinstalling Japanese does not restore the file, when several Windows components are failing, or when the error says the DLL is corrupted or not designed to run on Windows.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides the source SFC uses to replace damaged protected files. SFC then checks protected system files and repairs available copies.
A successful result may say that no integrity violations were found, or that corrupted files were found and successfully repaired. Test Japanese input and the affected program after restarting.
If SFC says it could not repair some files:
- Restart once more.
- Run DISM again.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain. - Review the detailed record at:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Do not copy imjpcd.dll from another computer merely because both systems use Windows. The release, language components, servicing state, and architecture may not match.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that identifies reported Windows problems, while its repair function requires the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in repair commands remain the direct fix for this Windows component.
Fix 3: Repair the application that displays the error
If Japanese input works in Windows and only one application reports imjpcd.dll, the application may be damaged, outdated, or incompatible with the current IME.

For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall it, restart Windows, and install the current version from the official source.
If the application is old, test whether it fails only when Japanese input is active. Microsoft has documented Japanese IME compatibility problems affecting some Excel, WinForms, WPF, and legacy applications. Installing current Windows updates may resolve those problems. On affected systems, Windows may also provide a temporary Use previous version of Microsoft IME setting under the Japanese keyboard options.
If reinstalling the application fixes the error while Japanese input was already working, the application installation was the practical source of the failure.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and file integrity
Antivirus software can quarantine a file after a detection or security remediation, but quarantine is only a possible cause. Verify it instead of assuming that security software removed imjpcd.dll.

- Do not restore the file unless the path and file are confirmed to be a genuine Windows component.
If your security product identifies the file as malware or the path is unusual, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. You can also use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
Do not disable antivirus protection just to obtain a replacement DLL. A missing system component should be restored through Windows language installation and servicing.
Fix 5: Check architecture and unusual paths
Do not infer architecture from the folder name alone. System32 can contain 32-bit IME components, and a 32-bit DLL is not automatically wrong on a 64-bit Windows installation.
Check an existing copy without replacing it:
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and record the file version if present.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if available.
- Check the full path.
- Compare the result with the Windows installation and Japanese language features on that computer.
A copy inside a Windows IME directory is more consistent with the expected role than a copy in a random download folder or an unrelated application directory. An “architecture mismatch” message can also indicate corruption, tampering, or a mismatched build, not just a 32-bit versus 64-bit problem.

Fix 6: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal missing-DLL repair command.
Public export metadata for one imjpcd.dll build shows an IME-related export named CreateIImeSystemDictInstance, not a registration export. Running this command is therefore not a supported normal repair:
regsvr32 imjpcd.dll
It may produce an entry-point or compatibility error and will not reinstall the Japanese language component. Restore the component through Windows Settings, Windows Update, DISM, or SFC instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 7: Consider drivers only when there is a separate device problem
imjpcd.dll is not established as a graphics, audio, chipset, or DirectX driver file. Do not begin by reinstalling every driver.
Check Device Manager only if you also have keyboard, touch, or input-device symptoms:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards and Human Interface Devices.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a physical keyboard problem, download the driver only from the computer or device manufacturer. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported outdated drivers, while driver installation requires the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling Japanese or repairing the named application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Use Windows recovery if repairs fail
If the error began immediately after an update, language migration, malware incident, or broader system failure, use recovery options rather than substituting a DLL.
First, install all pending updates and restart. If that does not help:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Review the available recovery options.
- If System Restore is available, select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings without intentionally removing personal files, but recently installed programs, drivers, and updates can be affected.

FAQ
Is imjpcd.dll a real Windows file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft’s Japanese IME and its language components.
Is imjpcd.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No reliable evidence connects it to those runtimes. Reinstalling them is not the normal fix.
Is Microsoft IME 2012 a separate download?
No. The label refers mainly to an older Windows IME product. Modern Windows restores Japanese input through its built-in language features and Windows Update.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I download imjpcd.dll from a DLL archive?
No. An archive copy may contain malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or an invalid replacement that does not repair the underlying Windows component. Use Windows language installation, Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or the original application installer.
Should I copy it from another Windows computer?
Normally no. The Windows release, language configuration, servicing state, and file build may differ.
Why does the error appear in only one program?
The program may have a damaged installation or may be incompatible with the current Japanese IME. Repair or reinstall that application after confirming that Japanese input works elsewhere.
What if the message says the DLL is not designed to run on Windows?
Treat that as possible corruption, tampering, wrong architecture, or a mismatched build. Do not interpret it as proof that the genuine Microsoft component is inherently invalid. Reinstall Japanese, apply updates, and run DISM followed by SFC.
