nvcuvid.dll is an NVIDIA Windows driver DLL used for GPU-accelerated video decoding. When Windows reports that nvcuvid.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is usually to repair the NVIDIA display driver or the specific application that requested it.
Do not download a random copy of the DLL and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or a game folder. That can introduce malware, use the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit build, or leave the actual driver problem unresolved.
What nvcuvid.dll does
nvcuvid.dll is the Windows implementation of NVIDIA’s Video Decoder, also called NVDEC or the NVIDIA Video Decode API. Video players, games, emulators, encoders, transcoders, and other media software can load it to use supported NVIDIA hardware for video decoding.
It is not a normal Windows component. Installing DirectX, .NET, or a Visual C++ Redistributable does not normally provide this file. For end users, the relevant copy is supplied by the NVIDIA display-driver installation. NVIDIA’s Video Codec SDK is intended for developers and does not mean that ordinary users should install the SDK to repair this error.

Applications may load the DLL through a normal link or dynamically at runtime. As a result, an application can fail only when opening a video, enabling hardware acceleration, or starting a particular game mode.
Reported errors and what they mean
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because nvcuvid.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because nvcuvid.dll was not found.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading nvcuvid.dll.”
- “nvcuvid.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all prove that the file itself is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by nvcuvid.dll is missing. A wrong-architecture DLL, damaged application copy, incompatible driver, or unsupported GPU can produce similar symptoms.
Reported file versions and sizes
The following values are commonly reported in file indexes, but they are not an authoritative NVIDIA version history. Driver branches, GPU support, application packaging, and file locations can differ.
| Architecture | Reported version | Reported size |
|---|---|---|
| 64-bit | 7.17.14.3160 | 5.17 MB |
| 32-bit | 7.17.14.2623 | 4.42 MB |
| 32-bit | 7.17.13.4201 | 3.81 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.14.13.142 | 2.41 MB |
Do not choose a replacement DLL from this table. The correct file must come from a compatible NVIDIA driver or the application’s legitimate installer.
Fix 1: Reinstall the official NVIDIA display driver
This is the most likely fix when several NVIDIA-dependent applications fail, the problem began after a driver update, or a driver-cleanup utility removed part of the installation.
- Identify the graphics card:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Note the exact NVIDIA GPU model.
- Check the current driver:
- Right-click the NVIDIA adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the Driver Provider, Driver Date, and Driver Version.
- Download the driver for the exact GPU from NVIDIA’s official driver-download page. Select the correct Windows version and architecture.
- Close games, video software, browsers, and recording applications.
- Run the NVIDIA installer.
- Choose Custom (Advanced) rather than the default installation when the option is available.
- Select Perform a clean installation if a normal update did not restore the file or if the previous driver was interrupted or corrupted.
- Complete the installation and restart Windows.
- Test the application that originally failed.
A successful repair normally means the program starts, hardware decoding can be enabled, or the previous loader message disappears. If Device Manager still shows an error symbol, the GPU is not detected correctly and the DLL alone will not solve the problem.
Manually hunting through driver versions and guessing which package is stale can take longer than checking the hardware directly. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and identify available driver installations; its repair and driver installation features require the full version, and NVIDIA’s official installer remains the preferred source for this specific file.
If the NVIDIA installer fails
Do not delete random files from System32. Instead:
- Restart Windows and run the installer again.
- Temporarily close monitoring, overclocking, recording, and graphics-management utilities.
- Confirm that the selected package matches the installed GPU.
- Check Device Manager for an existing display-driver error.
- If stale driver software clearly prevents installation, use a documented, reputable driver-removal procedure, then reinstall from NVIDIA.
- Restart and check the driver version again.
If the installer reports that the hardware is unsupported, an old application may require a driver branch or GPU capability that the computer cannot provide.

Fix 2: Repair the affected game or application
If only one game or application reports the error, repair that installation before changing Windows globally. The program may have a damaged private copy, incomplete update files, or an obsolete dependency.
Use the application’s own repair option if it has one. In Steam:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish.
- Start the game again.
For another launcher, look for Repair, Verify, Scan and repair, or Validate files in the game’s settings. If repair does not help, uninstall and reinstall the affected application from its official installer.
This is especially important when the program loads nvcuvid.dll from its own directory. A system-wide driver reinstall may succeed while the application continues loading an old or damaged private copy.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate driver file after an update or during an application installation.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving NVIDIA, the affected application, or
nvcuvid.dll. - Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error.
- If the file is confirmed to have come from the official NVIDIA installation, follow your organization’s security policy before restoring or allowing it.
- If its origin is uncertain, leave it quarantined and reinstall the driver or application instead.
Do not disable antivirus protection to force a DLL into place. If malware is suspected, use a full scan. Microsoft Defender Offline is available through Windows Security and can scan after restarting outside the normal Windows environment.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application do not necessarily use the same DLL architecture. Copying a 64-bit nvcuvid.dll into a 32-bit program directory can cause messages such as:

- “Not a valid Win32 application”
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows”
- “The specified module could not be found”
Do not assume that a DLL in one folder is suitable for every program. Determine the architecture of the affected application from its documentation, installer, or publisher. Then repair the NVIDIA driver and the application using installers that support that architecture.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 and SysWOW64 have specific Windows redirection behavior. Their names are not a safe instruction to copy files manually. Let the driver installer place the correct binaries.
Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency
A loader message can identify nvcuvid.dll even when another library in its dependency chain is the real problem. This is more likely when the file exists but the application still says “The specified module could not be found.”
Check the following:
- Record the full path shown by the application, crash dialog, or Event Viewer.
- Open Event Viewer by searching for it from Start.
- Go to Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Note the faulting application, faulting module, and error code.
- Reinstall the NVIDIA driver and the affected application.
- If the error names a Microsoft runtime such as
VCRUNTIME140.dllorMSVCP140.dll, install the matching current Microsoft Visual C++ v14 Redistributable, including the required x64 or x86 package.
Visual C++ Redistributables do not supply nvcuvid.dll. Install them only when the actual error identifies a missing Microsoft runtime.
Fix 6: Confirm that the hardware is supported
nvcuvid.dll does not create NVIDIA hardware support. If the computer has only Intel or AMD graphics, installing the DLL alone cannot provide NVIDIA decoding.
Recommended Free Tools
Check Device Manager → Display adapters. If no supported NVIDIA GPU is present, use the application’s software-decoding mode, select an available Intel or AMD acceleration path, or consult the application’s hardware requirements.
If an old application fails on a newer or different GPU, it may require an obsolete NVIDIA API, an older driver branch, or a GPU capability that the current system does not support. A successful DLL copy cannot overcome that limitation.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when other Windows files are also failing, Windows has broader corruption, or the issue followed an interrupted update. They are not a substitute for reinstalling a third-party NVIDIA driver.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. SFC repairs protected Windows components; it normally does not replace a missing NVIDIA driver DLL. If both commands complete without reporting a relevant repair, reinstall the NVIDIA driver instead.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what needs attention; repairs require the full version, and it is not a replacement for the official NVIDIA driver or an application reinstall.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
If nvcuvid.dll worked until a driver update, cleanup, or application change, System Restore may return the system to an earlier working state.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the failure.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can roll back drivers and applications. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the official driver reinstall and application repair steps.
What not to do
Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites pages may provide malware, a modified file, the wrong architecture, or a build incompatible with the application. A copied file can also be loaded from an application directory before the legitimate driver copy, creating a security and compatibility risk.

Do not run regsvr32 nvcuvid.dll
nvcuvid.dll is a driver API library, not a normal COM or ActiveX component that users repair by registering it. Running regsvr32 generally does not install its dependencies, restore the driver, or make unsupported hardware work. It can also produce another misleading error.

Do not install unrelated runtimes indiscriminately
DirectX, .NET, and Visual C++ packages do not normally provide this NVIDIA DLL. Install a Microsoft runtime only when the error names that runtime.
Information to collect if it still fails
Before contacting the application or GPU manufacturer, record:
- The exact error text
- The affected application executable
- Whether other NVIDIA-dependent applications fail
- NVIDIA GPU model
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 version and build
- NVIDIA driver version
- Full path of the reported
nvcuvid.dll - Event Viewer’s application error details
- Whether the problem began after a driver, antivirus, Windows, or application change
This information separates a missing driver file from an application bug, dependency failure, architecture mismatch, or unsupported hardware.
FAQ
Is nvcuvid.dll part of Windows?
No. The relevant Windows copy is supplied by the NVIDIA display driver. It is not normally repaired by installing Windows multimedia components.
Is it part of the CUDA Toolkit?
The name refers to NVIDIA’s video-decoding API, but ordinary users should repair the display-driver or application installation rather than install a developer SDK.
Can I copy it from another computer?
No. The other computer may use a different driver, architecture, GPU, or dependency set. NVIDIA driver DLLs are not a functional replacement for the complete driver installation.

Why does only one game fail?
That game may have damaged files, a private outdated DLL, an incomplete update, or a hardware-decoding requirement that other programs do not have. Verify or reinstall the game first.
What if I have an Intel or AMD GPU?
The NVIDIA DLL cannot add NVIDIA decoding support. Use the application’s compatible software or vendor-specific decoding mode, or check whether the program supports the available hardware.
Does SFC repair nvcuvid.dll?
Usually not. SFC targets protected Windows components. A missing or damaged NVIDIA copy normally requires repair or reinstallation of the NVIDIA display driver.
