If Windows says bthmigplugin.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a loose DLL.
The error may appear during startup, a Windows upgrade or rollback, Bluetooth setup, or another servicing operation. It can also appear as a generic “Bad Image” message. The filename alone does not identify the exact trigger, so begin with the repair steps that restore protected Windows components.

What bthmigplugin.dll does
Microsoft file tables associate BthMigPlugin.dll with Bluetooth-related Windows components. Microsoft installation-media manifests place it under Bluetooth configuration and migration areas, rather than identifying it as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, game dependency, or ordinary third-party driver.

Depending on the Windows version, the file may appear in a path similar to:
C:WindowsSystem32migrationbthmigplugin.dll
It may also be represented beneath a migration-manifest directory such as:
C:WindowsSystem32migwizdlmanifestsMicrosoft-Windows-Bluetooth-Config
Do not treat either path as universal. Windows can keep component files in servicing or migration locations, and a file’s presence in System32 does not by itself prove that it is correct.

Note what was happening when the message appeared:
- At sign-in or startup: suspect damaged or removed Windows components.
- During Windows Update or a feature upgrade: suspect incomplete migration data or a failed rollback.
- Only when Bluetooth is used: inspect the Bluetooth adapter and its driver after repairing Windows.
- After cleanup, debloating, or antivirus action: check whether a protected file or migration directory was removed.
- Across several unrelated programs: suspect system-wide Windows corruption, not several broken applications.
- Inside one third-party application: confirm that the application is actually calling a Windows component before reinstalling the application.
Representative messages include “bthmigplugin.dll was not found,” “the code execution cannot proceed,” “could not be loaded,” and “the file is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.” The wording varies by Windows build and by the component that attempted to load it.
Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus any restart
A pending update can contain the missing component or correct the servicing state that caused the error.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update. On some Windows 10 installations, open Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available Windows updates.
- Restart even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Check for updates again after the restart.
- Repeat until Windows reports that the system is up to date.
Try the action that previously produced the error. If the message remains, continue with the component repair commands below.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
DISM repairs the Windows component store. System File Checker then uses that repaired store to replace damaged protected files. Run the commands separately and in this order.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- At the prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
A successful result may say that SFC found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If the repair completed, test startup, Windows Update, Bluetooth, or the upgrade again.
If SFC says it repaired files but the error remains, restart once more and run SFC again. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use the matching Windows installation media or continue to the repair-reinstall options below. Do not substitute a DLL copied from another computer.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing whether the component store changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair provides a scan that shows what it identifies; its repair functions require the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the authoritative repair path for this system component.
Fix 3: Check the file’s location and signature
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If the file exists but Windows still reports it as invalid, check whether it is in a Windows directory and carries a Microsoft signature.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the path shown in the error dialog, if one is provided.
- Right-click
bthmigplugin.dlland select Properties. - Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the listed signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Microsoft.
- Open the Details tab and note the file description, version information, and original filename if present.
Do not assume that a file is safe because its name is correct. A DLL in a temporary folder, a user profile, a download directory, or an unrelated application folder deserves further investigation. Do not delete it before scanning the computer.
You can also check the Windows build:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winver. - Press Enter.
- Record the Windows edition and build number.
Microsoft publishes historical file versions for particular releases, including Windows 8.1 and Windows Server versions, but there is no reliable public Microsoft list of one current size or hash for every Windows 10 and Windows 11 build. A 32-bit and 64-bit copy are not interchangeable, and a file from another Windows build may fail even when the filename matches.

If the signature is missing or invalid, run a full scan in Windows Security, then repair Windows with DISM and SFC. Do not register or replace the file manually.
Fix 4: Repair a failed Windows upgrade
Time needed: 30–90 minutes
If the problem began during an upgrade, rollback, or feature installation, Windows migration files may be incomplete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst repeat Windows Update and the DISM/SFC sequence. If the error continues on a supported Windows 11 installation, use the built-in repair reinstall:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Keep the computer connected to power and do not interrupt the restart sequence.
This process reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings. The option may not appear on every Windows installation. If it is unavailable, use matching Microsoft installation media and select the repair or in-place upgrade path that preserves personal files and applications.
If the failure started immediately after a specific update, Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates may provide a suitable rollback. Use that option only when the timing clearly matches the update, and install the update again after Microsoft or your administrator provides a corrected path.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy, or a cleanup utility may remove a file that Windows expected during migration.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections that match the time the DLL disappeared.
- Expand an entry to see its path and action.
Restore a quarantined file only when its path, Microsoft signature, and Windows context confirm that it is genuine. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can cause it to be detected again. If there is any doubt, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.
Afterward, run a Full scan from Virus & threat protection > Scan options. If malware was found and Windows remains unstable, use System Restore or Windows recovery media rather than copying files from the internet.
Fix 6: Reinstall the Bluetooth driver only when Bluetooth is also failing
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A Bluetooth driver problem can occur at the same time as a Windows component problem, but reinstalling a driver does not directly restore bthmigplugin.dll.
Use this branch when Bluetooth devices no longer appear, the adapter has a warning icon, or Device Manager reports a driver problem.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth.
- Right-click the Bluetooth adapter.
- Select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test Bluetooth.
If that does not help:
- Return to Device Manager > Bluetooth.
- Right-click the adapter and select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal without selecting any option to remove unrelated system software.
- Restart Windows.
- Allow Windows to reinstall the adapter.
- If needed, install the current driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer’s official support page.
Finding the correct Bluetooth package can involve checking hardware IDs, Windows architecture, and several manufacturer releases. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues and show what it identifies; driver installation through the full version is optional. A driver update will not replace a missing Windows migration DLL, so complete DISM and SFC when the DLL error persists.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Use System Restore or recovery media
Time needed: 20–90 minutes
Use System Restore when the error began after a cleanup program, driver change, update, or other identifiable system modification and a restore point exists.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review affected programs and complete the restore.
- Restart and test Windows.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but applications, drivers, and settings installed after the restore point may be changed. If no restore point is available, use Settings > System > Recovery or matching Microsoft installation media to access repair options.

If DISM cannot repair the component store, provide a matching installation source using Microsoft’s documented repair-source procedure. The source must match the Windows edition, language, architecture, and applicable build closely enough for servicing. An unrelated copy of bthmigplugin.dll is not a substitute.
Do not download or register the DLL manually
Avoid DLL download websites and “fixer” packages. A loose file can contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, lack a valid Microsoft signature, or leave the component store inconsistent. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or a migration folder often hides the real servicing failure rather than repairing it.
regsvr32 is also not a general missing-DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that are designed to expose COM registration entry points. Microsoft provides no instruction to manually register this Bluetooth migration component, and registration cannot recreate a missing or corrupt file. Running:
regsvr32 bthmigplugin.dll
is therefore not a normal troubleshooting step.

FAQ
Is bthmigplugin.dll a genuine Microsoft file?
Yes. Microsoft’s Windows support tables and installation-media manifests associate it with Bluetooth migration and configuration components. Its exact location varies by Windows release and servicing state.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Generally no. bthmigplugin.dll is not identified as one of those runtimes. Reinstalling them will not normally restore a protected Windows Bluetooth migration component.
Is the file supposed to be in System32 or SysWOW64?
There is no single guaranteed path. It may be under a migration directory or represented in Windows installation manifests. Do not copy between System32 and SysWOW64 based only on the filename.
What if the file is present but the error remains?
Check its path, Microsoft digital signature, architecture, and Windows build. The file may be corrupt or incompatible. Run DISM followed by SFC rather than registering it.
Will reinstalling Bluetooth drivers fix the DLL?
Only if the separate driver problem is causing the Bluetooth symptom. Driver reinstall does not directly restore bthmigplugin.dll.
When is a clean reinstall necessary?
Consider it when malware or severe disk corruption persists, Windows recovery cannot repair the installation, and matching repair media fails. Back up personal data first and use Microsoft recovery options.
