wxmsw28u_vc_custom.dll is a third-party application file, not a Windows system component. When Windows reports that wxmsw28u_vc_custom.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the program that installed it instead of copying a random DLL into a Windows folder.

Older applications and games have bundled wxWidgets files under names like this. The filename alone does not identify one universal owner, original path, or checksum. Examples of software inventories containing this file include LenovoEMC Storage Manager and older games, but those examples do not prove which program is installed on your computer.
Before replacing anything: identify the owner
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
The safest repair depends on finding the executable that requested the DLL.
- Read the error dialog carefully. Note the application name, shortcut name, or game title shown behind the message.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in. The target points to the executable and the start location often identifies the installation folder.
- Open File Explorer and search the suspected installation folder for
wxmsw28u_vc_custom.dll. - If the shortcut is unavailable, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager and inspect Startup apps for the affected program.
- You can also open Event Viewer by pressing Win+R, entering
eventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. Check Windows Logs → Application for an error recorded at the time the program failed.
If the file is present but Windows still says it cannot be found, the message may refer to a dependent DLL rather than the named file itself. Record the exact wording before continuing.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application

- Press Win+I to open Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Start the program again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not work, use Uninstall and then reinstall the program from its original developer, publisher, launcher, or installation media. Use the installer that matches the program’s edition and architecture.
For a game installed through a launcher, open that launcher and look for an option named Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair. The wording varies, but the function should compare the installed files and download missing files from the publisher’s service.
After repair, confirm that wxmsw28u_vc_custom.dll has returned to the application’s own folder. Do not move it to a Windows system directory.
If the installer fails
Temporarily check whether the installation folder is protected or read-only:
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Install to the program’s normal location unless the vendor specifies another path.
- Confirm that the disk has free space.
- Check whether security software blocked the installer.
- Restart Windows and run the repair or installation again.

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application DLL. This is especially plausible if the error appeared immediately after a security scan, update, cleanup operation, or application launch.
- Open the Start menu and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Review recent items around the time the application stopped working.
- Expand a detection that refers to the affected program or its installation folder.
- Confirm that the file came from the legitimate application installer and that the detection is not a genuine threat.
- If you are confident it is safe, use the available restore or allow action, then launch the application.
Do not blindly select Allow on device and do not create a permanent exclusion merely because a program is missing a DLL. If the file was altered or came from an untrusted source, remove the application, scan the computer, and reinstall it from the original vendor.
A safer repair after a confirmed quarantine is often to run the application’s repair function or reinstall it. That restores the complete set of files and gives security software a fresh file to evaluate.

An application may need more than wxmsw28u_vc_custom.dll. Related files can include:
wxbase28u_vc_custom.dllwxmsw28u_core_vc_custom.dllwxmsw28u_xml_vc_custom.dll
The exact companion files depend on how the application was built. If one file is missing, several others may also be absent or incompatible.
Use the application’s repair or verification feature rather than assembling a set of DLLs from separate downloads. The correct package must match the application’s build, including its x86 architecture, release/debug configuration, compiler family, and vendor customizations.

If you have a verified backup from the same application installation, restore the complete application folder or the exact missing file to the application’s documented directory. Do not use a file taken from a different game or program merely because the filename matches.
Fix 4: Install the required Visual C++ runtime
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
The vc portion of the filename identifies the compiler family used to build the wxWidgets DLL. It does not prove that installing a Visual C++ Redistributable alone will restore the missing file.
The parent application may require a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime in addition to its bundled wxWidgets files. If the application’s documentation or installer specifies a particular runtime, install that package from Microsoft.
For an x86 application running on 64-bit Windows, the x86 redistributable is generally the relevant architecture. A 64-bit Windows installation can legitimately have both x86 and x64 Visual C++ packages because different applications use different architectures. Installing both does not make a 32-bit wxWidgets DLL suitable for a 64-bit program.
After installing the vendor-required runtime:
- Restart Windows.
- Run the application’s repair or file-verification function again.
- Start the program.
- If the same error remains, reinstall the parent application rather than repeatedly reinstalling the redistributable.
Older applications can require a legacy Visual C++ runtime rather than the newest package. Follow the application’s vendor instructions instead of assuming that one current runtime replaces every older release.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only after the app repair
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party wxWidgets DLL installed by an application, so use them as a secondary step when other applications also show system-file or component errors.
First restart Windows and install any available Windows updates. Then:
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands finish.
- Try the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test the application after restarting. If both commands report no integrity violations but the DLL is still missing, return to the application’s installer.

Fix 6: Check drivers only if the application also reports graphics or hardware errors
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A display or device driver is not the normal source of a missing wxWidgets DLL. However, update drivers if the application also crashes with graphics, audio, storage, or device errors.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Storage controllers.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver → Search automatically for drivers, or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not replace the wxWidgets DLL with a driver file. If the application still reports the same missing filename after a driver update, repair the parent application.

Fix 7: Check optional Windows features only when the error identifies one

Windows Features are rarely the direct answer to this filename. Do not enable random components to compensate for a missing application DLL.

If the application’s documentation specifically requires an optional feature:
- Press Win+R.
- Enter
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. - Review the feature named by the application vendor.
- Select it, choose OK, and restart if Windows requests it.
- Test the application.
For older software, a vendor may specifically document a legacy framework or compatibility component. Enable only the named requirement. A Windows feature will not supply wxmsw28u_vc_custom.dll.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM components. A wxWidgets runtime DLL is normally loaded by its application and is not normally registered globally.
Running a command such as this is therefore not a standard repair:

regsvr32 wxmsw28u_vc_custom.dll
It may produce an entry-point error, and it does not restore missing companion files or dependencies. Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation explicitly instructs you to register that specific DLL.
If the error says “specified module could not be found”
That wording can mean either the named DLL is absent or a dependency required by it is absent.
Check the application’s folder for the DLL and its companion wxWidgets files. If the named file exists, repair or reinstall the whole application. Advanced users can use a reputable dependency-analysis utility to identify which imported module fails, but do not download replacement DLLs based only on the reported dependency name.
Also check whether the installed file is:
- x86 when the application expects x86;
- a release build rather than a debug build;
- built with the expected Visual C++ family;
- from the same application version;
- accompanied by the other wxWidgets libraries it needs.
A 64-bit, MinGW, debug, or differently customized build is not an interchangeable replacement.

Avoid these unsafe fixes
Do not download wxmsw28u_vc_custom.dll from a random DLL website. A downloaded copy can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different customized build, or fail because companion files are also missing.
Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Global placement can create version conflicts, hide which application owns the file, and expose other programs to an untrusted binary.
The safe sources are the affected application’s original installer, its official repair or launcher verification process, the application vendor, or a verified backup of the same build.

Check Protection history, installer logs, permissions, disk health, and whether security software is blocking the installation. Then remove the application completely and reinstall it from the original trusted source. If other programs also fail, investigate broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC.
