Build an Amiga Emulator with a Raspberry Pi 3: What You Need and What It Costs

A Pi 3 is a documented Amiga emulation platform, but whether a complete setup fits under $100 depends on local prices and the gear you already own.

A Raspberry Pi 3 can run Amiga emulation, but the available documentation does not verify that a complete build still costs less than $100. The practical route is to use software aimed at older hardware, supply the required Kickstart ROM files, and price the whole setup—not just the board—in your local market.

What a Raspberry Pi 3 Amiga build needs

The Pi 3 is a documented Amiga emulation platform. A Raspberry Pi Official Magazine guide describes a build using Amibian and UAE4ARM, while current Amiberry documentation directs Pi 3 users to its Lite version. The old walkthrough is useful as a parts and setup reference, but it does not establish current compatibility or prices. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s Pi-to-Amiga walkthrough

  • Raspberry Pi 3: the computer running the emulator.
  • microSD card: holds the operating system and emulator setup.
  • Power supply: required to run the Pi; confirm the appropriate supply for your board and include its cost if you do not already own one.
  • Controller: the historical walkthrough uses a wired Xbox 360 controller. It is an example, not a current buying recommendation.
  • Kickstart ROM files: Amiberry lists Amiga Kickstart ROMs as a requirement. The emulator alone does not provide the full firmware needed for broad compatibility.
  • Games and storage: the old walkthrough copies ROM and game files from USB storage. You can instead use media supported by the emulator and place it on suitable storage.
  • Display and input devices: account for a monitor and, where needed for setup, a keyboard. The source walkthrough also discusses HDMI audio and controller configuration.

Can the complete build stay under $100?

That depends on your location, what you already own, and the price and availability of the board and accessories. The available sources provide no current full build total, so they cannot substantiate an under-$100 claim. A board-only price is not the project cost.

Before buying, add up the items you actually need. At minimum, check local prices for the Pi 3, power supply, microSD card, and controller; include display or HDMI-related items if they are not already covered by your setup. State whether you already have a monitor, keyboard, or USB storage when comparing your total with the $100 target. No current prices or availability were established for these parts.

Choose software suited to Pi 3 hardware

Amiberry-Lite

The Amiberry Quick Start guide, edited August 2, 2026, describes the standard version as recommended for Raspberry Pi 4 and 5, and Amiberry-Lite as optimized for Raspberry Pi 3 or older hardware. It requires Amiga Kickstart ROM files and supports ADF, ZIP and 7z disk images, WHDLoad .lha archives, CD images, and RP9 packages. Amiberry Quick Start guide

On slower systems, Amiberry recommends “Good compatibility (approximate)” if the default cycle-exact setting cannot maintain full speed. That is a performance-versus-accuracy trade-off: use the setting that runs acceptably on your hardware rather than assuming the most exact mode will be smooth.

RetroPie Amiga cores

RetroPie documents lr-puae2021 as the option for lower-power devices and lr-puae as the more demanding, accuracy-oriented option. Its Amiga page lists recognized Kickstart filenames, versions, and checksums, and says ROMs belong in the RetroPie BIOS directory. Consult the page for the exact filenames and placement expected by your chosen core. RetroPie Amiga documentation

RetroPie also discusses UAE4ARM on Raspberry Pi and supported disk formats. Its notes say UAE4ALL2 is no longer developed. The choice between these emulator routes is primarily a question of software setup and the balance between performance on older hardware and emulation accuracy.

Kickstart ROMs: the part you must plan for

Kickstart is Amiga firmware, separate from the emulator program. Amiberry requires Kickstart ROM files, and RetroPie specifies filenames and checksums for its Amiga cores. Obtain ROMs through a legitimate route and follow the naming and directory requirements for the emulator you select; having a game disk image does not replace the firmware requirement.

The historical Raspberry Pi Magazine article says UAE4ARM included an AROS ROM, but notes that it supported only some programs and recommends genuine Amiga Kickstarts for reliability. It also quoted Amiga Forever Plus Edition at €29.95 at the time. That price and product information are historical, not a current offer or verified present-day acquisition option. Set up Amiga emulation on the Pi 3

Amiberry quick-start path

  1. Install and launch an Amiberry version suited to your system; the project identifies Amiberry-Lite for Pi 3 or older hardware.
  2. Copy your Kickstart ROM files into the Kickstarts directory.
  3. Rescan ROM paths so the emulator can detect the files.
  4. Choose an Amiga model, such as A500 or A1200, appropriate to the software you want to run.
  5. Load supported game media, such as an ADF disk image, then start emulation.
  6. If cycle-exact mode cannot maintain full speed, try “Good compatibility (approximate)” and assess the result on your setup.

These steps reflect the current Amiberry Quick Start guide; menu labels and supported formats can change, so use its instructions if the interface differs.

Historical Amibian and UAE4ARM path

The Raspberry Pi Magazine walkthrough describes writing Amibian to a microSD card, booting into UAE4ARM, copying ROM and game files from USB storage, rescanning ROM paths, selecting an Amiga configuration, choosing its matching Kickstart ROM, mounting an ADF image, and starting emulation. It says F12 returns to the UAE4ARM interface for disk swaps and save states. Because the walkthrough is more than nine years old, treat these as historically documented steps rather than confirmation that every detail works unchanged today.

What makes the setup “killer” on this budget?

On a Pi 3, the sensible target is a configuration that runs reliably, not a promise of maximum accuracy or a guaranteed bargain. Start with a lightweight emulator option, use the ROM and media formats it expects, and adjust compatibility settings if performance is insufficient. The documented choices provide a way to trade some accuracy for smoother operation on older hardware; the sources do not establish benchmark results for particular games or configurations.
