Its biggest changes are dedicated ray-tracing hardware, Shader Execution Reordering (SER), updated Tensor and optical-flow hardware for DLSS 3 Frame Generation, and AV1-capable video encoders. The benefits come from those components working with supported software—not from one magic core—and NVIDIA’s advertised performance figures are selected-workload maxima, not guarantees for every game or card.
What is Ada Lovelace?
Ada Lovelace is NVIDIA’s third-generation RTX architecture, introduced for the GeForce RTX 40 generation. “Ada” describes a shared design lineage; it is not a GPU model. The RTX 4090, for example, is one product built around Ada, while individual RTX 40 cards differ in specifications and performance. NVIDIA’s launch article describes Ada as built on a custom TSMC 4N process and reports up to 76 billion transistors for the largest configuration discussed there; that figure does not apply to every RTX 40 card. NVIDIA’s Ada Lovelace architecture overview and launch article describe the architecture and its features.

How Ada changes ray tracing
Third-generation RT Cores
Ada’s third-generation RT Cores accelerate ray-triangle intersection and add hardware for opacity micromaps and displaced micro-meshes. These features target work involved in ray tracing scenes with alpha-tested geometry—such as cutout foliage—and complex geometry. They matter only when a game or other application uses the relevant ray-tracing pipeline; their presence does not automatically improve every scene.

Ray tracing can send GPU threads toward different materials and shading operations. When neighboring threads take different paths, they do less useful work together. SER reorganizes shading work so similar operations can be processed more efficiently. It is an application-controlled technique described in NVIDIA’s architecture material and technical white paper, not an automatic acceleration for every ray-traced workload.

- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
NVIDIA advertises up to 3× shader performance for SER and up to 25% higher in-game frame rates. Those are vendor-reported maxima, not independent benchmark results or expected gains across all supported games. Actual results depend on the workload and implementation.
Opacity micromaps and displaced micro-meshes
Opacity micromaps help represent opacity information for geometry such as alpha-tested surfaces, while displaced micro-meshes provide a way to represent detailed geometry efficiently in supported pipelines. NVIDIA cites up to 10× faster bounding-volume hierarchy (BVH) build time and up to 20× less BVH storage for the displaced micro-mesh engine. These figures describe a specific geometry-processing operation, not a general frame-rate increase. Both features need software support to be used.

How DLSS 3 Frame Generation uses Ada hardware
Ada adds fourth-generation Tensor Cores and a new Optical Flow Accelerator. NVIDIA DLSS 3 Frame Generation uses these components to synthesize additional frames between conventionally rendered ones. A generated frame is not a new frame rendered by the game engine with fresh simulation and input sampling; it is an additional displayed image inferred by the technology. Therefore, a higher displayed frame rate from Frame Generation is not the same thing as the game producing that many new, fully rendered frames.

Its availability and effect depend on the title, settings, and system; the architectural capability alone does not mean every game can use it. NVIDIA’s architecture page also lists 1.4 Tensor-petaFLOPS with its FP8 Transformer Engine. That is a peak throughput claim, not a general measure of gaming performance.

What Ada’s AV1 encoding means for creators
GeForce RTX 40 cards use eighth-generation NVENC hardware with AV1 encoding. AV1 can be useful for recording, editing, streaming, and video calls, but the practical result depends on encoder settings and whether the whole workflow supports the format: the application, streaming or sharing platform, and playback device all matter.
NVIDIA describes AV1 as 40% more efficient than H.264. This is NVIDIA’s stated encoding comparison, not a guarantee of a particular file-size reduction or quality improvement in every workflow. NVIDIA also said AV1 dual encoders could speed video exports by up to 2×; that is a launch claim tied to supported workflows, not a universal export-time result. See NVIDIA’s architecture overview and RTX 40 launch article.

How to interpret Ada’s performance figures
NVIDIA’s headline specifications help describe what its hardware is designed to do, but they should not be read as direct comparisons of typical game performance. For example, NVIDIA listed up to 83 shader TFLOPs and up to 191 effective RT TFLOPs for the RTX 4090 in its September 20, 2022 launch announcement. These are RTX 4090 launch specifications, not figures for every RTX 40 card and not third-party game benchmarks. NVIDIA’s release notes that statements about benefits, specifications, and performance are subject to risks and uncertainties.
