Bungie announced on July 31, 2024, that it would eliminate 220 roles—roughly 17% of its studio workforce—as part of a shift in its development plans. Separately, the company said it was working to integrate 155 roles into Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). Those positions were not part of the 220 roles Bungie said it would eliminate.

What Bungie announced

In its July 31, 2024 announcement, Bungie said 220 roles would be eliminated, describing that as roughly 17% of its workforce. The company also said it was working to integrate 155 roles—roughly 12%—into SIE over the next several quarters. Bungie described the integrations separately from the role eliminations; the two figures should not be added together as a single layoff total.

Bungie said more than 850 team members would remain working on Destiny and Marathon after the changes. These are figures reported by Bungie in its announcement, not independently audited totals.

Why Bungie said it was cutting roles

Bungie attributed the changes to rising development costs, shifts in the games industry and enduring economic conditions. Then-CEO Pete Parsons said the studio had tried to build toward three enduring franchises while seeding incubation projects with senior staff from existing teams. In his account, that approach stretched Bungie’s talent and support structures too thin.

Parsons also cited a broad economic slowdown, a sharp downturn in the games industry, what he called a “quality miss” with Destiny 2: Lightfall, and the need to give The Final Shape and Marathon more development time. He summarized the company’s financial position this way: “We were overly ambitious, our financial safety margins were subsequently exceeded, and we began running in the red.” These are Bungie’s stated explanations; its public announcement does not independently establish the full causes of its financial situation.

How the project plans were changing

Bungie said it would focus development on Destiny and Marathon. It also announced a plan to spin out an incubation project—an action game set in a new science-fantasy universe—into a new studio within PlayStation Studios. Those were plans announced in July 2024, not confirmation of the projects’ or studio’s present-day status.
