Fern Hook, who publishes art as ANTIREAL, said Marathon’s alpha included elements from her 2017 poster designs. Bungie confirmed that unauthorized artist decals had been placed on a texture sheet that made it into the game. The allegation concerned specific assets—not the entirety of Marathon’s art—and Hook later said the dispute was resolved to her satisfaction.
What did Fern Hook allege?
On May 15, 2025, Hook publicly said she recognized elements of her 2017 poster designs in Marathon alpha footage and screenshots. The Washington Post reported that the Scottish independent artist saw similarities in environmental assets and objects. Hook characterized the game as “covered with assets lifted from poster designs I made in 2017.” That is her description of the allegation, not a finding that all of Marathon’s art was copied. The Washington Post’s May 16 report covered her claim.
What did Bungie confirm?
In a response reported May 16, Bungie said it investigated the concern and confirmed unauthorized decals had been included on a texture sheet that was ultimately used in-game. The studio attributed their inclusion to a former Bungie artist and said the existing art team had not known about the issue. Bungie also said it had contacted Hook. GameSpot reported Bungie’s statement: “We immediately investigated a concern regarding unauthorized use of artist decals in Marathon and confirmed that a former Bungie artist included these in a texture sheet that was ultimately used in-game.”
Bungie said it would review assets and strengthen checks for documenting artist contributions. The public confirmation supports a specific account of unauthorized decal use; it does not establish how many assets were involved or show that the game’s broader art direction was copied.
