Bungie’s Marathon launched worldwide on March 5, 2026, for Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with cross-play and cross-save. The live game’s next announced milestones are an October 6 refresh and the larger Symbiosis update, now scheduled for December 8.
What is Marathon?
Marathon is a sci-fi PvP extraction shooter set on Tau Ceti IV. Players take the role of cybernetic mercenaries called Runners and can enter matches solo or as part of a crew, according to Bungie’s Marathon FAQ.

The game shares a world with Bungie’s original Marathon trilogy, but it is neither a remake nor a direct sequel. New players do not need to treat it as a continuation of the trilogy’s story.
Where can you play Marathon?
Bungie’s launch announcement confirmed availability on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with cross-play and cross-save. Cross-save requires a compatible copy of the game on each system and linked Bungie and platform network accounts; it does not make one purchase playable on every platform. What is changing in the next updates?
Bungie’s September 14, 2026 development update lays out two announced milestones. These are planned changes, not confirmation that the features have already shipped.
October 6 refresh
The smaller October update is planned to reset progression and the in-game economy, refresh rewards, and bring quality-of-life and balance changes. Players should plan for their progression and economy state to change when this refresh arrives.
Symbiosis on December 8
Content previously expected in September is now grouped into Symbiosis, which Bungie says is scheduled for December 8. The planned additions include the game’s first permanent PvE experience, a refreshed Perimeter zone, a social space and firing range, a new Runner shell, an experimental PvP Team Deathmatch mode, and improvements to onboarding for new players.

Bungie also says it is moving away from a strict seasonal schedule to give the team more flexibility to build, test, and improve features before release. The dates and feature list reflect the studio’s September 14 announcement; they should not be read as independently verified delivery.

What should you know about editions and accessories?
Bungie announced Standard and Deluxe digital editions, as well as a physical Collector’s Edition. Its Standard Edition announcement says gameplay updates such as maps, Runner shells, and events are included as the year progresses. The available information here does not establish current storefront prices or present Collector’s Edition stock, so check the relevant platform store or Bungie’s official channels before buying.

The Collector’s Edition was described as including a 1/6-scale Thief Runner Shell statue, miniature WEAVEworm, embroidered patch, postcards, digital rewards, and other items. PlayStation also announced a limited-edition Marathon DualSense controller; it is an optional accessory, not a requirement to play. PlayStation’s announcement listed Southeast Asian pricing and a March 6, 2026 start date for that region, while warning that availability and dates vary by country or region. No. Bungie’s support FAQ still contains an older statement that the game is in development and has no release date, but later announcements supersede that status: Bungie announced the release date, confirmed the game was live on March 5, and published a September 2026 update for the live game. Use the launch notice for release status rather than the outdated FAQ wording.
