“The program can’t start because cabinet.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “cabinet.dll was not found,” “The code execution cannot proceed because cabinet.dll was not found,” or an installer error while reading a .cab package.
cabinet.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called the Cabinet File API. It reads and creates Microsoft Cabinet archives, which are packages commonly used by Windows and software installers.

Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website. Start by identifying whether Windows is damaged or only one application is failing.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list before changing anything:
- Only one game or application fails: Repair or reinstall that application first.
- Several applications or Windows installers fail: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- The problem began after Windows Update: Restart, finish installing updates, then repair Windows or the affected application.
- The problem began after antivirus activity: Check quarantine and security history before restoring anything.
- The error appeared after disk cleanup, malware removal, or a failed installation: Scan the computer, check Windows health, and consider System Restore if the timing is clear.
- The file exists but the error remains: The application may be using the wrong architecture, an app-local copy, or another missing dependency.
- Every application is affected: Treat this as possible Windows corruption, malware, storage damage, or a broader system problem.
No particular game or application can be identified from cabinet.dll alone. The program named in the error, installer, shortcut, or Event Viewer is the program that needs attention.

What cabinet.dll is and where Windows keeps it
cabinet.dll implements Microsoft’s Cabinet File API. Its FCI functions create .cab archives, while its FDI functions read and extract them. Microsoft documents these interfaces in the Cabinet FCI API and Cabinet FDI API.
It is part of Windows, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, or .NET runtime. Installing one of those packages will not normally restore Windows’ copy of cabinet.dll.
On a standard 64-bit Windows installation, the usual locations are:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →C:WindowsSystem32cabinet.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64cabinet.dll
Despite its name, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit system environment used by 32-bit applications. This arrangement is part of Windows WOW64 behavior, described in Microsoft’s WOW64 implementation details.
The exact file version follows the installed Windows build. Historical versions should not be copied over a current system file.
Fix 1: Restart and complete Windows Update
An interrupted update can leave the component store or an installer in an incomplete state.
- Save your work and restart Windows.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart again if Windows requests it.
- Try the affected application or installer.
If the error disappears, the problem was likely caused by an incomplete update or a temporary servicing failure. If it returns, continue with Windows repair.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this fix when cabinet.dll is missing from a standard Windows location, appears damaged, or multiple applications and installers are failing.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired store to replace damaged protected system files. Run them in that order.
Open an elevated terminal
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Terminal (Admin). On some systems this is Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Confirm that the window is running with administrator privileges.
Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. It can remain at one percentage for a while. Do not close the window simply because progress appears slow.
When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Allow the scan to reach 100 percent. Then restart Windows and retry the program.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Microsoft’s procedures for these commands are documented in its guides for repairing a Windows image and using the System File Checker tool.
Running SFC first is a common mistake. If the component store is damaged, SFC may not have a healthy source from which to restore cabinet.dll.
When repeated DISM and SFC runs leave you hunting through logs and guessing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show its scan findings before any repair; the repair is performed by the full version, but it is not required and does not replace Microsoft’s built-in tools.
Understand the SFC result
SFC normally reports one of these outcomes:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files. If the application still fails, repair that application or investigate architecture and dependencies.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the program again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again. If the same errors remain, review the CBS log or move to an in-place Windows repair.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: Restart and run the scan again from an elevated terminal. Persistent failure may indicate disk, servicing, or broader Windows damage.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, do not download a loose DLL. Use a matching Windows installation source or proceed to an in-place Windows repair.

Fix 3: Repair the affected application
If Windows itself works and only one program reports cabinet.dll, the application is the most likely problem. Its installation may be incomplete, damaged, updated incorrectly, or using a private copy of the DLL.
Repair a Windows application
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the application again.
The repair option may not appear for every program. If it is absent or does not help, use the application’s own maintenance option or reinstall it.
Repair a classic desktop program
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer’s instructions.
- Restart Windows if requested.
For a game, open its official launcher and look for Verify, Verify files, Scan and repair, or a similar command. These functions restore files from the game’s approved installation source without replacing Windows system files.
If repair fails, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the publisher’s official installer. Back up saved games and settings first when the program stores them locally.

If only that application now starts normally, Windows did not need a manually copied cabinet.dll.
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can quarantine a file after a false positive, malware event, or damaged installation.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
cabinet.dll. - Check the reported path, detection name, and action.
- Do not restore the file merely because its name is familiar.
Restore a quarantined file only when you have confirmed that it is in the expected Windows path, has a valid Microsoft signature, and the system is otherwise healthy. Update the security definitions and scan the computer afterward.
If malware or tampering is suspected, run a full Microsoft Defender scan. When ordinary scanning cannot remove the threat, use Microsoft Defender Offline through Windows Security. Microsoft’s Microsoft Defender Offline instructions explain how to start that scan.
Do not disable antivirus protection simply to force a DLL into a folder. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, investigate the detection instead of creating an exclusion.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application normally runs through the 32-bit Windows environment, while a 64-bit application requires the 64-bit system environment. On 64-bit Windows, that is why both of these paths can exist:

- STREAMLINED & INTUITIVE UI, DVD FORMAT | Intelligent desktop | Personalize your experience for simpler efficiency | Powerful security built-in and enabled.
- OEM IS TO BE INSTALLED ON A NEW PC with no prior version of Windows installed and cannot be transferred to another machine.
- OEM DOES NOT PROVIDE SUPPORT | To acquire product with Microsoft support, obtain the full packaged “Retail” version.
- PRODUCT SHIPS IN PLAIN ENVELOPE | Activation key is located under scratch-off area on label.
- GENUINE WINDOWS SOFTWARE IS BRANDED BY MIRCOSOFT ONLY.
C:WindowsSystem32cabinet.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64cabinet.dll
Do not swap the files between these folders.
A bitness problem is more likely when:
- One older application fails but newer software works.
- The error appeared after reinstalling an application.
- The program was copied from another computer.
- The application includes its own DLL files.
- Windows reports that the DLL is not designed to run on Windows.
The safe response is to repair or reinstall the affected application and use its official prerequisites. Do not copy an older 32-bit or 64-bit file into the Windows directory.
If the file exists but the program still reports it as missing, the program may be loading an app-local copy or reporting a broader dependency failure. Use the application’s repair process rather than replacing the system copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 6: Reinstall after a failed installation or update
An installer may fail while extracting a .cab package even when the problem is not a missing system DLL. A damaged download, interrupted update, blocked temporary folder, or damaged application cache can produce a similar message.
- Restart Windows.
- Delete only the failed installer’s temporary files if the publisher documents where they are stored.
- Download the application again from its official publisher.
- Run the installer as administrator if the publisher recommends it.
- Temporarily close other installers and demanding applications.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart and test the program.
Do not replace cabinet.dll with a file extracted from another application installer. The file may have a different architecture, version, signature, or servicing context.
Fix 7: Check storage and malware when failures are widespread
If Windows repair repeatedly finds new corruption, or files disappear again after repair, the cause may be storage failure, malware, or broader operating-system damage.
First back up important personal files. Then:
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
- Use Defender Offline if malware remains suspected.
- Check the drive’s health using the computer or drive manufacturer’s diagnostic utility.
- Avoid repeatedly reinstalling random DLL files.
- Note whether other protected Windows files are also failing.
A damaged disk can corrupt repaired files again. Malware can also alter or delete system components. The exact remedy depends on diagnostic results, so do not assume cabinet.dll is the only problem.
Fix 8: Use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair
System Restore can help when the problem clearly began after a recent update, driver installation, application installation, or system change.
To check for a restore point:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore if the point is appropriate.
System Restore is not a substitute for malware removal or disk repair. Do not use it to avoid investigating an active infection.
If DISM cannot repair the component store and SFC continues to fail, use an in-place Windows repair with matching Windows installation media. This reinstalls Windows system components while normally preserving personal files and installed applications, but back up important data first and follow Microsoft’s current installation instructions carefully.
What not to do
Do not use DLL download sites websites
A loose download can contain malware, the wrong Windows version, the wrong architecture, or a modified file. Even a genuine file may not match the component store or the application that is requesting it.
Manual copying can also create permissions, signature, servicing, and dependency problems. Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and the application’s official installer are safer sources.
Do not run regsvr32 cabinet.dll
cabinet.dll is an API/runtime DLL, not a self-registering COM component. It does not need general registration with regsvr32.
Running:
regsvr32 cabinet.dll
may produce a message that DllRegisterServer is missing. That does not repair the file. Use DISM and SFC for Windows corruption, or repair the application that is failing.
Do not install unrelated runtimes as a guess
Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET can repair other missing dependencies, but they do not normally supply Windows’ cabinet.dll. Install them only when the affected application specifically requires them.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Do not replace System32 manually
Copying a file from another PC, an old Windows installation, or an installer package can leave Windows with mismatched components. Controlled deployment and forensic work may use matching signed Windows images, but that is not ordinary troubleshooting.
Updating drivers
A graphics, storage, or chipset driver can cause an application or installer to fail, but a driver update does not normally replace cabinet.dll. Update a driver only when the symptoms point to a device problem, crashes, installation failures, or a driver-specific error.
For a manual update:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver supplied by the device manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
When hunting through Device Manager for stale drivers is taking longer than the original diagnosis, Outbyte Driver Updater can show its scan findings; the driver installation is done by the full version, and it is optional because the problem may still require application or Windows repair.
Prevention
- Keep Windows updates complete and restart when requested.
- Install applications from their official publishers.
- Use the launcher’s verification feature for games.
- Leave antivirus protection enabled.
- Do not delete unknown files from Windows folders during disk cleanup.
- Keep current backups before major Windows or application changes.
- Avoid copying system DLLs between computers.
- Record which program fails and when the problem began before changing files.
FAQ
Is cabinet.dll a Windows file?
Yes. It is Microsoft’s Cabinet File API and ships as part of Windows. It supports reading and creating Cabinet archives.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I download cabinet.dll?
No. A random DLL download can be unsafe or incompatible and often leaves the underlying Windows or application problem unresolved.
Does cabinet.dll belong to Visual C++ or DirectX?
No. Those packages may provide different dependencies, but Windows’ cabinet.dll is a Windows system component.
Why are there two cabinet.dll locations?
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains the 64-bit system copy and SysWOW64 provides the 32-bit environment for 32-bit applications.
Should I register cabinet.dll with regsvr32?
No. It is not a self-registering COM server. regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair tool.
Recommended Free Tools
What if SFC says it could not repair the file?
Run DISM first, then run SFC again. If the error persists, check the CBS log and consider a matching in-place Windows repair. Do not substitute a downloaded DLL.
What if only one game reports the error?
Verify or repair the game through its launcher. If that fails, reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer. A one-program failure usually points to that program rather than Windows as a whole.
What if every application reports cabinet.dll?
Run Windows Update, then DISM and SFC in that order. Also scan for malware and consider storage problems or an in-place Windows repair if corruption returns.
