jbrws.dll errors usually mean that a legacy Jasc application cannot find one of its own program files. The safest repair is to restore the complete Jasc installation rather than downloading this DLL separately.

You may see messages such as:

  • “This application failed to start because jbrws.dll was not found.”
  • “The file jbrws.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “A required component is missing: jbrws.dll.”
  • “Error loading jbrws.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The program can’t start because jbrws.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “jbrws.dll could not be located.”
  • “jbrws.dll is not designed to run on Windows.”

These are common error forms reported by third-party DLL indexes, not an official Microsoft list. The wording matters less than identifying which executable requested the file.

The 60-second answer

jbrws.dll is the Jasc Browser Support DLL, a component of Jasc Browser Support from Jasc Software, Inc. It is associated especially with older Jasc graphics software, including Paint Shop Pro 7.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is an application DLL, not a normal Windows component. It should usually be beside the Jasc program executable in its installation folder. Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Do this first:

  1. Read the full error dialog and note the program name.
  2. Check whether jbrws.dll is still in that program’s installation folder.
  3. Check Windows Security’s quarantine history.
  4. Repair or reinstall the affected Jasc application from original installation media or a legitimate installer.
  5. If the program still fails, use compatibility troubleshooting and investigate missing companion files or obsolete dependencies.

What jbrws.dll is

The file’s recorded description is Jasc Browser Support DLL. Its product identity is Jasc Browser Support, and its listed publisher is Jasc Software, Inc.

The file is reported as a legacy Win32, 32-bit DLL. Older file inventories commonly associate it with Paint Shop Pro 7 and list it alongside files such as:

  • jbrwsutil.dll
  • JControls.dll
  • JCMYK.dll

Those neighboring files are important. A missing jbrws.dll message does not prove that this is the only damaged or absent file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exact application cannot be determined from the filename alone. Look at the error dialog title, the executable name, and any path shown in the message. If the program is psp.exe or the path points to an old Jasc installation, Paint Shop Pro is the likely caller. Other Jasc applications or bundled components may also use the file.

Is jbrws.dll part of Windows

There is no reliable evidence that Windows supplies jbrws.dll as a built-in system file. It is not a standard Windows DLL, DirectX file, .NET file, or normal Visual C++ redistributable file.

That means these are usually the wrong repairs:

  • Copying the file to System32
  • Copying it to SysWOW64
  • Downloading a replacement from a random DLL website
  • Registering it automatically with regsvr32
  • Installing a modern runtime without identifying the missing dependency

A reported 32-bit Jasc DLL belongs with the 32-bit Jasc application that uses it. On 64-bit Windows, many 32-bit applications can still run, but that does not mean their DLLs should be moved between Windows system folders.

Fix 1: Identify and inspect the affected application

Before changing files, establish which program is failing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the error path

  1. Start the affected application.
  2. Expand the error dialog if Windows provides a details option.
  3. Record the program name and executable path.
  4. Look for references to psp.exe, Paint Shop Pro, Jasc, or another legacy graphics application.
  5. Write down the complete error text.

If the error names a different application, repair that application instead. The same filename can be requested by more than one old program.

Check the application folder

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, select Open File Location.
  4. Look for jbrws.dll in the folder containing the application executable.
  5. Also look for related Jasc files, including jbrwsutil.dll.

If the file is present, do not immediately replace it. The file may be damaged, blocked by security software, or accompanied by another missing dependency. If it is absent, continue with the repair steps below.

A successful result is the application opening normally from its original shortcut. If the message changes to name another DLL, the installation is incomplete rather than fixed.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security Protection History

Antivirus software can quarantine an application DLL after installation or during a later scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections for the Jasc application folder or jbrws.dll.
  6. Open a detection to see its path and action.
  7. Restore the file only if you have verified that it came from your legitimate Jasc installation and the entire application directory is trustworthy.

Microsoft warns that allowing a genuinely malicious file can expose the device. Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. If the detection is unclear, leave it quarantined and reinstall the parent application from trusted media.

After restoring a verified file, start the Jasc program again. If Windows quarantines it immediately, the installation may be modified or the file may not be safe. In that situation, remove the old installation and reinstall from legitimate original media instead of repeatedly overriding antivirus protection.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the Jasc application

This is the most reliable repair because it restores the DLL and its companion files together.

Use Windows repair options

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find Paint Shop Pro or the affected Jasc program.
  5. Select it.
  6. Choose Repair, Change, or Modify if available.
  7. Follow the installer prompts.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Start the application from its normal shortcut.

Some older installers do not offer a repair option. Preserve your projects, custom brushes, plug-ins, and configuration files before uninstalling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall from original media

If repair is unavailable:

  1. Back up your personal projects and custom settings.
  2. Obtain the original Jasc installation disc, backup, or legitimate installer.
  3. Uninstall the affected application from Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Run the installer.
  6. If the installer fails to write to its destination, right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  7. Apply any updates that came with the original product.
  8. Restart Windows again.
  9. Launch the application.

Do not use a standalone jbrws.dll download as a substitute for the installer. A replacement can be the wrong build or architecture, omit jbrwsutil.dll and other Jasc files, or leave the program without required registry and configuration entries.

The repair worked if the original application starts without a missing-file message. If it starts but crashes later, the program may have a broader compatibility problem.

Fix 4: Run the old application with compatibility support

Very old Jasc software may install successfully but fail on a current Windows release.

  1. Right-click the application executable or shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Choose an older Windows version suggested by the application’s documentation or installer.
  6. Select Run this program as an administrator only if the application requires it and you trust the installation.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.
  8. Start the application.

You can also use Windows’ compatibility troubleshooter:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Troubleshoot.
  4. Select Other troubleshooters.
  5. Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
  6. Select Run.
  7. Choose the affected application and follow the recommendations.

Some Windows versions route older troubleshooters through the Get Help application. Use Microsoft’s built-in guidance rather than downloading compatibility utilities from unofficial sites.

If compatibility settings allow the program to start, keep the setting tied to that application only. Do not change system-wide compatibility settings unnecessarily.

Fix 5: Restore the complete dependency set

A Jasc program can report jbrws.dll even when another required component is the real problem. Older Paint Shop Pro installations may depend on several Jasc modules and legacy Microsoft libraries.

The correct response is to reinstall the application bundle, not to collect DLLs from different websites.

If the original installer explicitly names a Microsoft runtime:

  1. Note the exact runtime name and architecture.
  2. Obtain it from Microsoft’s official download or product documentation.
  3. Install the x86 package when the affected application is 32-bit.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Test the Jasc application again.

Do not install a modern Visual C++ package simply because a DLL error appears. Current Visual C++ redistributables provide Microsoft runtime libraries for supported development toolchains; they do not provide jbrws.dll.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs are also failing

DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party Jasc DLL, so use them when other applications also show corruption or when Windows itself is behaving abnormally.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows if requested.

Run SFC

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the Jasc application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program. If it reports that it could not repair everything, repeat the application repair rather than expecting SFC to create jbrws.dll.

Running DISM and SFC repeatedly without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows what it identifies, while repair is performed by the full version; for this file, reinstalling the Jasc application remains the definitive fix.

Fix 7: Install Windows updates

Updates may improve compatibility and repair unrelated Windows components.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the Jasc application.

Windows Update will not normally provide jbrws.dll. This step is useful for the operating system, not as a source for the missing Jasc file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Check drivers only if the failure is hardware-related

A missing jbrws.dll is not normally a device-driver problem. Use Device Manager only when the application also fails during printing, scanning, display initialization, or another hardware operation.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Printers, or Imaging devices.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows and test the application.

For a clean reinstall, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not replace jbrws.dll with a driver update.

Manually checking several hardware vendors can mean hunting versions and guessing which driver is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing the drivers it identifies, while installation is performed by the full version; use it only for driver maintenance, not as a replacement for reinstalling the Jasc program.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not run this merely because an error names jbrws.dll:

regsvr32 jbrws.dll

If the DLL is not a self-registering COM or ActiveX component, the command can produce an error without repairing anything. It can also create confusion about whether the file belongs in a system folder.

Use regsvr32 only when the original application documentation specifically says that the file must be registered. A normal Jasc application repair should be performed through its installer.

Should you copy jbrws.dll to System32 or SysWOW64

No. Those folders are not general storage locations for application DLLs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • System32 is used by Windows and can contain 64-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.
  • SysWOW64 supports 32-bit Windows components on 64-bit Windows.
  • Neither folder is the normal destination for a Jasc application DLL.

Putting a file in either location can hide the original installation problem, create version conflicts, or expose other applications to an untrusted binary. Restore the file to the Jasc program directory by repairing or reinstalling the application.

Fix 9: Use System Restore after a clear system change

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after software removal, a system change, or another identifiable event.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the failure.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.

System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs but does not normally remove personal files. It may not restore an application’s data or a missing DLL if the program was separately deleted. Reinstall the Jasc application afterward if the error remains.

If the program still will not start

Collect these details before trying another repair:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The exact executable name and full path
  • The complete error message
  • Your Windows version
  • The Jasc application name and version, if shown
  • Whether the error affects every Windows account
  • Whether antivirus reported or quarantined the file
  • Whether the file exists in the application folder
  • Whether reinstalling changed the error

If every user account sees the same message, suspect the installation or system-wide security software. If only one account is affected, test a fresh Windows profile and inspect per-user permissions and configuration.

There is no current official standalone jbrws.dll download that should be treated as a universal fix. Use original Jasc installation media or a legitimate application installer, and be prepared for the possibility that very old software is no longer fully compatible with the current Windows release.

FAQ

Is jbrws.dll a Windows system file

No. It is identified as the Jasc Browser Support DLL and belongs to legacy Jasc software.

Which application normally needs jbrws.dll

Paint Shop Pro 7 is a documented association, but the filename alone cannot identify every caller. Check the error dialog and executable path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download only jbrws.dll

Avoid random DLL download sites. A standalone file may be malicious, incompatible, or incomplete. Repair or reinstall the Jasc application instead.

Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable

Only if the application or its legitimate installer specifically identifies a missing Microsoft runtime. Visual C++ packages do not supply jbrws.dll.

Do I need both System32 and SysWOW64 copies

No. Do not copy this application DLL into either folder. Keep the correct file with the Jasc program.

Will regsvr32 fix the error

Usually not. It is intended for DLLs that support registration, not for every missing application DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if reinstalling restores the file but the program still fails

Use compatibility troubleshooting, confirm that companion files were installed, check antivirus history, and consider running the application in an older supported Windows environment. The software itself may be obsolete even after its files are restored.
