Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart by recording three details before changing anything:
- Which program, installer, or Windows action displays the error?
- Does it happen at startup, when opening a
.cabfile, in File Explorer, or only inside one application? - Is Windows 32-bit or 64-bit, and does the affected program use the same architecture?
cabview.dll is a Windows component, not a Visual C++ runtime or a general-purpose game DLL. It is the Cabinet File Viewer shell extension used by Windows to view, browse, open, and extract Cabinet (.cab) files. If cabview.dll is missing or damaged, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement from a random DLL site.

What cabview.dll does
Microsoft identifies cabview.dll as the Cabinet File Viewer shell extension. It is associated with Explorer’s handling of Cabinet archives and historically ships with Windows.

On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
%windir%System32cabview.dll
%windir%SysWOW64cabview.dll
Despite its name, System32 contains native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files used by 32-bit applications. Microsoft explains this architecture redirection in its File System Redirector documentation.

On 32-bit Windows, the file is normally under:
%windir%System32cabview.dll
The exact presence, version, and size can vary by Windows release, servicing level, language, edition, architecture, and installed components. Do not replace a file merely because its version number differs from an example found online.
What the error messages mean
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because cabview.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “cabview.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading cabview.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “cabview.dll could not be loaded.”
- “
[path]cabview.dllis either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The first messages usually mean Windows cannot find the file or cannot load it from the expected system location. “The specified module could not be found” can also indicate that a dependency required by the DLL is missing, even when cabview.dll itself exists.
The “not designed to run on Windows” message is commonly associated with status 0xC000007B, or STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_FORMAT. Microsoft documents that status here. It often points to a damaged file or a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or interrupted update can leave a protected Windows component incomplete. Start with Windows Update because a pending update may contain the correct component files.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update. In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not require an immediate restart.
- Repeat the check until no further updates are offered.
- Reopen the program or repeat the action that produced the error.
If the error started immediately after an update, restart first and then run the repair commands below. If Windows Update itself fails, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair path for a missing or corrupted Windows copy of cabview.dll. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which supplies replacement files to System File Checker. Run DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program or Cabinet file again.
Microsoft recommends this DISM-then-SFC order in its system file repair instructions. The SFC command documentation explains the available scan behavior.
Possible SFC results include:
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.” The protected files appear intact. The error may involve a dependency, an application-specific path, or a different file name.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.” Restart and test again.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.” Run DISM again, review the CBS log, and continue to the recovery steps below.
Repeating SFC without repairing the underlying component store usually does not add useful information. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work by showing what the scan identifies; its free scan shows the reported problems, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows DISM/SFC remain the authoritative repair path.
Fix 3: Give DISM a matching Windows source
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, Windows may not be able to obtain a clean component from Windows Update.
You need a Windows installation source that closely matches the installed release, edition, servicing state, and architecture. Do not point DISM at a random Windows folder or copy cabview.dll from another computer.

Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Defender or another security product may have quarantined a damaged or suspicious copy. This is more likely if the problem began after a security scan, cleanup operation, or malware incident.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections around the time the error began.
- Open a detection to see its file path and action.
- Confirm whether the reported path is a genuine Windows directory.
- Run a full scan before restoring anything.
Do not restore a quarantined file simply because an application reports it as missing. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine detection can expose the system. Follow Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.
If malware may have modified system files, disconnect from untrusted networks, back up important documents, and run a full or offline Microsoft Defender scan. A file named cabview.dll outside the Windows directory is not automatically malicious, but its publisher, signature, provenance, and hash need verification.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit paths
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL. On 64-bit Windows, do not swap files between System32 and SysWOW64.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
To inspect the normal locations:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%windir%System32. - Search for
cabview.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, repeat with
%windir%SysWOW64.
Finding the file does not prove that it is healthy. A damaged file, incorrect architecture, invalid signature, or missing dependency can still prevent loading. Let DISM and SFC restore the correct protected copy rather than copying one manually.
If the error appears only in a 32-bit application, identify that application and check its own installation. If it appears in Explorer or across multiple Windows functions, treat it as a Windows component problem.
Fix 6: Repair the affected application only when appropriate
Although cabview.dll is a Windows shell extension, a third-party application can display an error while requesting a Windows component. The application name, executable path, and full error path help determine where the failure originates.
If only one application reports the problem:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps. Windows 10 may show Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only after confirming that its local settings or data can be recreated.
- If neither option exists, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the publisher’s official installer.
Do not assume that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET caused a cabview.dll error. Those packages provide different files. Reinstalling them is relevant when the message names files such as MSVCP140.dll, a DirectX component, or a .NET assembly, not normally when it names the Windows Cabinet Viewer.
Fix 7: Update drivers only if the timing points to a driver problem
A graphics, storage, or security-driver change can expose broader system corruption, but cabview.dll is not a driver file. Device Manager is therefore not the first repair tool for this error.
If the problem began after a device change or Windows upgrade:

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Storage controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
For a recently installed driver, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if that option is available. Otherwise, obtain the driver from the device manufacturer or Windows Update.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are stale instead of making you hunt through Device Manager; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Updating a driver is optional and does not replace DISM, SFC, or repairing the affected application.

Do not run regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It calls a DLL’s DllRegisterServer entry point; it does not restore a missing file or repair the Windows component store.
Running:
regsvr32 cabview.dll
is therefore not a general solution for this error. It can also produce another error if the file is not designed for registration or if the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit version of regsvr32 is used.
Do not download cabview.dll and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or a game directory. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, have the wrong architecture or build, lack a valid Microsoft signature, or hide the actual component-store problem. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, or the official installer for the affected application.
Fix 8: Use Windows recovery when repair fails
If SFC cannot repair the file and DISM cannot access a suitable source, use recovery options rather than manually replacing system files.
