If poco.dll is missing or was not found, repair or reinstall the game, NVIDIA component, or Windows application that requested it rather than downloading a replacement DLL. poco.dll is not a standard Windows file, and the correct copy must match the parent application’s version, architecture, dependencies, and installation path.
What this file actually does
poco.dll is associated with the POCO C++ Libraries, an open-source framework used by Windows applications and games. POCO provides reusable components for networking, files, threading, encryption, and other application functions.

The bare filename poco.dll is not a universal Windows runtime. Normal POCO Windows builds commonly use library-specific names such as PocoFoundation.dll, while a vendor may bundle, rename, or build its own copy as poco.dll.

A real example is NVIDIA’s NvContainer directory, which has contained poco.dll alongside modules such as PocoInitializer.dll, MessageBus.dll, and OpenSSL libraries. Games and other third-party applications may also keep their own copy in the application’s installation directory.

That is why copying a DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is usually the wrong repair. The application normally expects its own copy beside the executable or inside a vendor-specific subfolder.
A publicly reported catalogue entry lists a 32-bit poco.dll as version 1.9.0.0 and approximately 4.07 MB. That is catalogue metadata, not proof that every copy should have that version or size. There is no universal version, checksum, or ownership record for every file named poco.dll.
Cause-by-symptom guide
| Error or symptom | Likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because poco.dll is missing” | Incomplete installation, update, or quarantine | Repair or reinstall the named application |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because poco.dll was not found” | The file is absent from the expected application directory | Check the path, then use the application’s repair function |
| “The specified module could not be found” | poco.dll may exist, but another dependency is missing |
Repair the application and check Visual C++ runtimes |
| “The procedure entry point could not be located” | Wrong or incompatible POCO build loaded | Restore the exact copy supplied by that application |
| “poco.dll is either not designed to run on Windows” | Corruption, wrong architecture, invalid file, or mismatched build | Reinstall from the application’s official installer |
| Error began after antivirus activity | Defender or another antivirus quarantined the file | Review Protection history before restoring anything |
| Error began after a driver update | NVIDIA container files or another vendor component may be incomplete | Repair or reinstall the affected driver package |
Before changing anything, record the exact error text, the program name, and any path shown in the dialog. Also note whether the failure affects one application or several.
Fix 1: Identify the application that owns the file
This is the most important step. A poco.dll from one application is not necessarily compatible with another.
Check the error dialog
- Read the title bar and message carefully.
- Write down the application or game name.
- Look for a full path, such as a game folder or an NVIDIA directory.
- Check whether the dialog names another DLL besides
poco.dll. - Close the message and try launching the same program again to confirm the error is repeatable.
If the path points to a game folder, use that game’s launcher repair function. If it points to an NVIDIA folder, treat it as an NVIDIA software problem. If it points to another application, repair that application instead.
Search for copies without replacing them
- Press
Windowsand typepoco.dll. - Choose Search or open File Explorer and search the relevant application drive.
- Right-click a result and select Open file location.
- Record every location you find.
- Do not copy one result over another.
Several applications can legitimately contain different POCO builds. Multiple copies are safer than forcing one global copy into a Windows system folder.
Check whether the problem affects one user
Sign in with another Windows account, if available, and launch the same program. If it works for another user, the problem may involve a per-user installation, permissions, or profile-specific quarantine rather than a missing Windows component.

Repairing the parent application restores the correct file and its related dependencies together.
Use a game launcher’s repair feature
The wording varies by launcher, but the process is generally:
- Open the launcher that installed the game.
- Open your library.
- Select the affected game.
- Open its Settings, Properties, or three-dot menu.
- Choose Verify integrity, Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair.
- Wait for the scan to finish.
- Allow the launcher to redownload damaged or missing files.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the game again.
If the launcher reports that files were repaired but the error remains, reboot once more and run the launcher as administrator. Right-click its shortcut, select Run as administrator, and repeat the verification.
Repair a conventional Windows application
- Press
Windows + I. - Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and wait for it to finish.
- Test the application.
- If it still fails, return to the same screen and select Reset, if appropriate.
Reset can remove application settings or local data, so use it only after Repair and after backing up important settings.
If no repair option exists:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- Reinstall using the application’s official installer.
Do not install a standalone poco.dll from a file catalogue. The parent installer is the source that knows which build, exports, and supporting files belong together.
Fix 3: Repair NVIDIA software if the path points to NvContainer
If the error names NVIDIA software or points to an NVIDIA container directory, repair the NVIDIA installation rather than repairing Windows.
- Close games and graphics applications.
- Open the NVIDIA App, if installed.
- Open Drivers.
- Select the installed driver.
- Choose the reinstall or repair action offered by the app.
- Complete the installation and restart Windows.
- Test the program that produced the error.
If the NVIDIA App is unavailable, download the current driver package from NVIDIA’s official site and run the installer. Choose the clean installation option only when the normal reinstall does not correct the problem, because a clean installation resets NVIDIA driver settings.
If the error started immediately after a driver change, use the supported rollback option:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Double-click the NVIDIA graphics device.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if enabled.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Device Manager can roll back a display driver, but it will not reliably restore every NVIDIA App or container file. If the poco.dll message points to NvContainer, reinstall the complete NVIDIA package.
Manually hunting through Device Manager for every outdated driver is slow and can leave related components mismatched. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers need attention; its full-version driver installation is optional, and reinstalling the affected NVIDIA package remains the definitive fix when that vendor’s files are damaged.
Fix 4: Install or repair the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
A program using POCO may also depend on Microsoft runtime files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. Installing Visual C++ will not install poco.dll, but it can fix a dependency failure that makes an existing POCO library appear unable to load.
- Identify whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit from its documentation, launcher, or vendor support information.
- Download the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s supported downloads page.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected program.
A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 runtime, even on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application needs x64. Do not replace an application’s 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit copy.
Older applications may require an older Visual C++ redistributable. If the current package does not help, use the version specified by the application’s official support documentation rather than installing random runtime files.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove a damaged or suspicious DLL. Restore it only after confirming that it came from the legitimate application.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the event involving
poco.dll. - Expand it and inspect the file path and detection details.
- If the file is clearly inside the genuine application directory and the detection is a confirmed false positive, choose Restore or Allow on device.
- Reinstall or repair the application afterward if the file remains damaged.
- Run a Windows Security scan before launching the program again.
If the file came from an unofficial download, an unknown directory, or a modified game installation, do not restore it. Remove the source and reinstall the application from its official installer.
Fix 6: Check architecture, signing, and permissions
A missing-file message can conceal a compatibility problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Right-click the application’s executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab and confirm that unnecessary compatibility modes are not enabled.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
- Right-click the application’s shortcut and select Run as administrator once for testing.
A legitimate copy should come from the application vendor or its installer. A file with the correct name can still have the wrong architecture, compiler build, exports, dependencies, or malicious contents.
If the application is installed under Program Files, do not grant broad write permissions to the entire folder. Use the application’s installer or launcher to restore files.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is suspect
Windows does not normally provide poco.dll, so System File Checker will not recreate an application’s missing POCO file. These tools are useful when several Windows components are failing or the problem began alongside broader system corruption.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. These commands repair protected Windows components, not arbitrary third-party files.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting longer. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader system issues and show what needs attention; its full-version repair is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned poco.dll.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run regsvr32 poco.dll as a general repair command. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration functions such as DllRegisterServer.
A POCO runtime library is normally loaded directly by the application, not registered as a COM component. Registering it will commonly produce an error or change nothing. Use regsvr32 only when the application’s vendor explicitly identifies the DLL as a COM component and provides registration instructions.

If the error returns after a clean reinstall:
- Record the full error text and file path.
- Check Windows Security Protection history again.
- Confirm the installer matches the application’s architecture.
- Check whether the application requires a specific Visual C++ runtime.
- Look in the application’s logs for a second missing DLL.
- Check whether the problem affects every Windows user.
- Contact the application vendor with the error, path, Windows edition, application version, and whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit.
A message saying “specified module could not be found” can mean that poco.dll is present but one of its dependencies is absent. An entry-point error usually indicates that the wrong POCO build was loaded. Reinstalling the exact parent application is safer than trying to solve either condition with a same-named DLL.
FAQ
Is poco.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with the POCO C++ Libraries and is normally supplied by a third-party application or vendor component.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Copying it globally can create search-order conflicts and still leave the application without the correct dependencies.
Is version 1.9.0.0 the correct version?
Not necessarily. That version and the reported 32-bit size are catalogue metadata, not a universal POCO specification.
Will Visual C++ install poco.dll?
No. Visual C++ may provide a dependency required by a POCO-based application, but the parent application’s installer must supply poco.dll.
Can I use a 64-bit copy with a 32-bit game?
No. The DLL architecture must match the application and its dependency set.
Should I use regsvr32?
Usually not. POCO runtime libraries are normally loaded by the application and are not COM servers.
What information should I provide when asking for support?
Include the exact error text, application name, expected DLL path, Windows version, application architecture, recent driver or antivirus changes, and whether repairing or reinstalling restored the file.
