Call of Duty 2 arrived on PC on October 25, 2005, and on Xbox 360 on November 17, 2005. Both versions are described as WWII campaigns spanning North Africa, Pointe du Hoc, and Russia, but the available official listings do not establish that every mission or feature is identical. Choose based on your platform and setup: Steam publishes legacy Windows requirements, while the official pages do not provide comparable resolution, frame-rate, or graphics benchmark data to declare a technical winner.
Release dates and platform context
Steam lists the PC version’s release date as October 25, 2005, with Infinity Ward as developer and Activision as publisher. Microsoft lists the Xbox version for November 17, 2005; Activision’s December 16, 2005 announcement identifies Call of Duty 2 as an Xbox 360 game. Steam’s listing, Microsoft’s Xbox listing, and Activision’s announcement document those dates and platform details.

Activision’s 2005 announcement, citing NPD FunWorld, reported a 77% attach rate for Xbox 360 in November 2005. That is a historical sales statistic, not a current figure or a measure of how the game performs on either platform.
Does the campaign differ between Xbox 360 and PC?
The official descriptions establish a shared high-level campaign premise, not complete feature parity. Both describe WWII battles in North Africa, at Pointe du Hoc, and in Russia, and say players can choose the order in which to take on missions. Steam’s PC description and Microsoft’s Xbox description also emphasize squad-based combat, with allies drawing fire, providing cover, using foxholes and moving tanks for cover, and warning of approaching enemies. These summaries do not confirm that the mission lists, mission details, or every gameplay feature match exactly.

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Microsoft’s listing describes the Xbox version’s multiplayer as Axis-versus-Allies team play. Steam lists single-player and multiplayer for PC. Neither listing, by itself, establishes that multiplayer modes or features are identical across platforms.
PC requirements for Call of Duty 2
Steam lists the following legacy Windows requirements. They describe the original game’s requirements, not a guarantee that it will install or run on a present-day PC.
Rank #2
- Strike Force Levels: New to the Call of Duty Franchise, strike force levels provide sandbox style game play experiences, allowing players to take command of any element of their squad at any time
- Branching Story lines: Choices the player makes could mean the difference between life and death for some characters and there exists an even greater opportunity for multiple endings
- Single Player Character Customization: Choose from a variety of weapons and load outs providing multiple choices for how you approach single player missions
| Requirement | Steam’s Windows listing |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 2000/XP |
| Processor | Pentium IV 1.4 GHz or AMD Athlon XP 1700+ |
| Memory | 256 MB RAM; 512 MB recommended |
| Graphics | DirectX 9.0c-compatible 64 MB video card |
| Storage | 4 GB free disk space, plus swap-file space |
| Sound | DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound |
| Input | Mouse and keyboard |
Steam separately lists a macOS requirements section; the table above is for Windows only. The same Steam page notes that Steam client operating-system support has changed since the game was released, so meeting the old game requirements alone does not establish current compatibility with the Steam client or a modern Windows installation. See Steam’s current game listing for its platform and requirements details.
Multiplayer and present-day online play
Steam’s PC listing specifies internet and LAN multiplayer and says internet play requires broadband. Microsoft’s current Xbox listing warns that some Xbox Network features may be unavailable, including cross-platform multiplayer and achievements. That general warning does not establish whether Call of Duty 2’s original Xbox 360 matchmaking service is operating now. The cited listings therefore are not enough to promise online play or to confirm that the original service has been shut down.

Which version looks or plays better?
The official listings consulted do not give a comparable resolution, frame rate, or measured graphics benchmark for the Xbox 360 and PC versions. Activision’s 2005 announcement quoted Robin Kaminsky, then Head of Global Brand Management at Activision Publishing, saying the Xbox 360 game “harnesses the power of the Xbox 360 hardware to set a new benchmark in epic, action games and delivers a movie caliber gaming experience.” That was promotional language, not an independent benchmark or a comparison against PC.
Without platform-specific measurements or clearly documented hands-on testing, it is not possible to identify a visual or performance winner from these sources. The practical choice is the version that fits the platform you can use; the cited information does not establish a specific resolution, frame-rate, or graphics advantage for either one.

How to choose
- Choose PC if you want the Windows version and your setup can accommodate an older game; treat Steam’s published specifications as legacy requirements and check current client and system compatibility.
- Choose Xbox 360 if you want the console release and already have access to the necessary hardware and game.
- Do not choose on assumed campaign identity or online availability: the official summaries support a shared campaign premise, not confirmed feature parity, and the current Xbox Network warning does not settle the status of original matchmaking.
