If Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 keeps crashing or freezing on PS4, work through these nine checks in order, then relaunch the game to see whether anything changed. A crash may return you to the dashboard with error CE-34878-0 or another application or system-software message. The error alone does not identify the cause: it can depend on the console, the symptoms, and whether you play from disc or a digital installation.
Activision Support says, “Games can freeze or crash during gameplay for a variety of reasons.” Its Black Ops 4 guidance is dated October 8, 2019; PlayStation’s current CE-34878-0 and disc-troubleshooting guidance was accessed October 8, 2026.
Try these low-risk fixes first
1. Close and relaunch Black Ops 4
If the game is frozen, quit and close the application, then start it again. Activision’s Black Ops 4 support guidance recommends restarting the game as the first step. Test a normal play session before moving on.
2. Restart the PS4
Use the PS4 power menu to restart the console, rather than simply reopening the game from a suspended state. Activision and PlayStation both recommend restarting for persistent crashes and CE-34878-0.

3. Update PS4 system software
- Open Settings > System Software Update.
- If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions and let it finish before launching Black Ops 4 again.
Activision and PlayStation both include system-software updates in their crash troubleshooting guidance.
4. Check for a Black Ops 4 update
- Highlight Black Ops 4 in the PS4 Library.
- Press the Options button and choose Check for Update.
- Install any available update, then relaunch the game.
PlayStation’s CE-34878-0 guidance recommends checking for game updates as well as system software.

If you play from disc, check the disc and console conditions
5. Inspect and clean the game disc
Use this step only for a physical copy; digital players can skip it. Look for dust, scratches, or abrasions. Activision recommends dampening a soft cotton cloth with water and wiping from the disc’s center straight toward the edge. Let it dry fully before putting it back in the console.
6. Improve ventilation and review old data carefully
Place the PS4 in a cool, well-ventilated area. Activision also suggests deleting old files and game data, but does not specify which items are safe to remove. Before deleting anything, review what it is and make sure important saved data is backed up; do not casually delete saved progress as a troubleshooting shortcut.

Use the error and comparison tests to narrow the cause
7. Check CE-34878-0-specific conditions
CE-34878-0 is a general game or application crash error, not proof of a Black Ops 4-specific fault. If you use a PS Camera, try PlayStation’s camera-related check:
- Disconnect the PS Camera and restart the PS4.
- Go to Settings > User > Login Settings.
- Turn off Enable Face Recognition, then test the game again.
If the PS4 hard drive was upgraded, Activision and PlayStation say reinstalling the original HDD may be necessary. This is a console-level change; do not attempt it unless you can safely handle the hardware and understand the data implications.

8. Compare the disc and console behavior
If you can, test the Black Ops 4 disc on another PS4. If the problem follows that disc, Activision says the disc is the likely fault and provides a replacement-disc route. If other discs also fail on your console, test another game disc, Blu-ray, or DVD; PlayStation’s disc guidance uses these comparisons to help identify a broader disc-reading problem.
For a digital copy, there is no disc to inspect or test. Instead, note whether the crash is limited to Black Ops 4 or also happens in other games and apps; that distinction helps separate a game-specific problem from a wider console issue.

Escalate without risking avoidable data loss
9. Consider database rebuild or support
For disc-reading problems, PlayStation lists Safe Mode option 5, Rebuild Database. This is general PS4 disc troubleshooting, not a Black Ops 4-specific crash cure. Use it when the symptoms point to disc-reading trouble rather than assuming it will fix every game crash.
For errors that persist, happen across multiple games or apps, or appear immediately at startup, contact PlayStation Support or Repairs. Initialization is a later, destructive escalation: back up first. PlayStation warns that Safe Mode option 7 deletes all console information, including system software. Do not choose it as an early routine step.
What the pattern of crashes can tell you
- Only a physical Black Ops 4 disc fails, and the issue follows it to another PS4: focus on disc inspection and Activision’s replacement-disc route.
- Several games or apps fail, or the PS4 errors as soon as the game starts: focus on system software and console diagnosis, and seek PlayStation support if the problem continues.
- Only Black Ops 4 fails on one console: the checks above can narrow possibilities, but the title and error code alone do not establish a specific cause.
These steps are evidence-based checks, not guaranteed cures. The cited support pages do not establish a current Black Ops 4 outage or a newly acknowledged crash bug.
