What the free PS5 Squad preview includes
Offworld Industries announced the console version on October 15, 2026, with Secret Mode as a partner. The alpha places players in a 100-player battle on Gorodok, where the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the People’s Liberation Army fight over a strategic rail line.

Squad is built around combined-arms warfare rather than short, self-contained firefights. Infantry advance under armor cover, helicopters transport troops, and logistics crews deliver the supplies needed to keep an operation moving. Squad leaders, riflemen, medics, pilots and crewmen have different battlefield responsibilities, so the result depends on coordinated decisions rather than individual kill totals.

The preview’s central lesson is reflected in the official message: “The squad that talks and moves as one is the squad that takes the objective.”

How Squad differs from Call of Duty
Call of Duty covers cinematic campaigns, conventional competitive multiplayer, Zombies and the free-to-play Warzone battle royale. Warzone revolves around looting, eliminating opposing squads, redeploying and surviving a shrinking gas field. Squad is slower and more interdependent: movement, positioning, orders and supply lines determine whether an attack succeeds.

Offworld describes the broader game as 50-versus-50 combat across 13 factions and 24 large maps, with faction-specific weapons and vehicles. Those figures describe the store edition, not necessarily every feature available in this limited alpha.

Who should try the alpha?
It suits players who want a slower, social shooter
A microphone is not technically required to launch the game, but Offworld says communication produces a significantly better experience. Expect squad leaders to give directions, medics to coordinate revives and logistics players to explain where supplies are going. If you prefer planning an approach, holding ground and supporting a push, the preview offers a very different rhythm from an arcade-style match.

There can be substantial travel, waiting for a vehicle, regrouping after a failed assault and searching for an objective before the next firefight. Individual gun skill matters, but a lone player who ignores orders can waste an entire squad’s effort.

How to join the free PS5 preview
- Open the official Squad PS5 alpha enrollment page.
- Choose the enlist or registration option and complete the requested sign-up.
- Follow the PlayStation download link supplied after enrollment.
- Install the alpha on PS5 and play between October 16 and October 25, 2026.
The dates and access process are specific to this event and can change, so check the official alpha page again before downloading. Enrollment is required; simply owning a PS5 does not grant automatic access.
Controls, servers and PS5 performance targets
Offworld is designing a console-specific control scheme and interface rather than copying the PC key layout. Mouse and keyboard support is not planned for console, aim assist is included, and official dedicated servers will host matches.

The current PS5 target is 4K output using dynamic-resolution upscaling at 60 frames per second. Development is still being optimized, and Offworld says final performance details will be published closer to release. The current FAQ does not list separate performance and quality modes.
Learning the game without losing its depth
Squad has traditionally demanded knowledge of roles, communication channels and battlefield procedures. For console, Offworld says it has redesigned controls, the user interface and onboarding so newcomers can learn those systems without simplifying the underlying game. Its stated goal is “to make Squad easier to learn, not simpler to master.”

- Start by identifying your squad channel and listening before issuing orders.
- Choose a role whose job you understand; medics, riflemen and logistics players contribute differently.
- Stay near your squad rather than treating the match as a solo deathmatch.
- Ask where the next objective, rally point or supply route is before moving out.
What has not been announced for the 2027 console edition
The planned PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release is currently targeted for 2027, but the checked official announcements do not give an exact launch date or retail price. They also do not confirm whether PlayStation Plus will be required, whether console cross-play will be supported, or whether the alpha’s content and performance represent the final product. Treat each of those details as pending official confirmation.
Bottom line for Call of Duty players
The free October preview is a low-risk way for PS5 owners to discover whether they enjoy communication-led, combined-arms combat. It is not a new Call of Duty mode: success in Squad comes from moving as a unit, using the right role and keeping the wider operation supplied. As Offworld puts it, “Communication remains one of the things that makes Squad, Squad.”
