Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To troubleshoot Call of Duty crashes on Windows 11, first identify the exact game, launcher, crash timing, error code, GPU and any recent updates; then work through Windows and graphics updates, shader loading, game-file repair and background-app checks. The right fix depends on whether you play Warzone, Black Ops 7 or another release, so do not apply a title-specific fix to every Call of Duty game.
Record what happens before changing settings
A crash on startup, during shader compilation or in a match can point to different problems. Note the exact Call of Duty release and launcher (such as Steam or Battle.net), when the crash occurs, whether it repeats, the full error text or code, your graphics card, and whether the issue began after a game, Windows or driver update. Activision asks for these details in its PC crash report.
If the game shows a specific error, keep the full message rather than relying on a general description such as “it crashes.” That information will help you choose the relevant troubleshooting branch below.
Update Windows and the graphics driver for your game
Restart the PC, install available Windows updates, and check Activision’s current support guidance for the exact Call of Duty release you play. Activision notes that outdated operating systems and graphics drivers can cause technical issues, but its recommended driver versions vary by game and GPU maker. A driver recommendation for one release is not a universal Call of Duty requirement.

Use the support page for the current recommendation rather than copying a version number from an older article or a different Call of Duty title.
If you play Warzone, let shader preloading finish
Activision’s Warzone PC troubleshooting guidance says to allow shader preloading to complete before leaving the Main Menu. Leaving early can interrupt preloading and affect performance. If the game is compiling shaders, wait for it to finish before joining a match or closing the menu. This instruction is specific to the Warzone guidance; follow the in-game behavior and support advice for other releases.

Repair or verify the game files in your launcher
Damaged or incomplete installation files can cause problems. Activision lists these repair options for Warzone; use the one matching where your copy is installed:
- Battle.net: Open the Call of Duty page in Battle.net, select the gear icon beside the Play button, then choose Scan and Repair and Begin Scan.
- Steam: Open your Library, right-click Call of Duty, select Properties, open Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files.
Launcher labels can change, and options may differ by title or distribution. If you use another launcher, use its own repair or verification feature rather than following steps for a different storefront.

Test for a conflict with background software
Temporarily close overlays, capture tools, hardware-monitoring utilities, RGB-control programs and other nonessential background apps, then launch the game and see whether the crash returns. This is a diagnostic test, not proof that any particular app is responsible. Activision’s Warzone guidance names NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner and Razer Cortex as possible conflicts in that context; the list should not be treated as universal for every release.
If closing apps does not isolate the problem, a clean boot can help determine whether a background service is involved. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions, test Call of Duty, and then restore normal startup settings. A clean boot is a temporary troubleshooting state, not a recommended way to run the PC indefinitely.

Use the DirectX branch only when the error points to DirectX
If the crash message explicitly identifies DirectX, consult Activision’s DirectX error guidance and ensure Windows and the game are current. That article is dated 2019, so prioritize current Windows updates and the game-specific instructions if its steps differ from newer guidance. Avoid downloading DirectX files from unofficial sites.
Do not change BIOS security settings as a general crash fix
TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are requirements for Black Ops 7 and Warzone according to Activision’s security requirements page; Activision says they are not requirements for other currently available Call of Duty titles. Check the current requirements for your game, and consider these settings only if that title requires them or displays a related security notification. Activision warns that incorrect UEFI/BIOS changes can cause system issues; consult your PC or motherboard manufacturer’s documentation or get qualified help before changing firmware settings.
Send a crash report or contact support if it continues
If the game still crashes after the relevant checks, collect the crash log and submit it through Activision’s PC crash report form. The form explains how to run CrashLogGenerator.exe from the game’s installation folder and upload the resulting Error Log ZIP. Submitting the form is voluntary and does not create a support ticket. For help from an agent, use Activision’s Support Options.
