That free status did not promise downloads would remain available forever: in June 2026, the developer announced it would discontinue free distribution. ITmedia reported that removal was scheduled for June 15, 2026; the available sources do not confirm whether the Steam listing is currently downloadable.
Why did PICO PARK: Classic Edition become free?
TECOPARK initially considered charging a small fee after updating the game with online play. In its September 13, 2025 announcement, the developer said the first update in nine years had added online play for 2 to 10 players and Steam Input support, and that the game would remain free for about a week. On October 4, TECOPARK explained why it stayed free: “I was planning to switch to a paid plan after updating the online support. but I forgot that once you switch from paid to free, I can never go back to paid! :)” TECOPARK’s Steam announcement archive records the August, September, and October updates.
The game was originally released on Steam on April 28, 2016, with TECOPARK listed as developer and publisher in Steam Support’s game metadata.
Does “free forever” mean it can always be downloaded?
No. In June 2026, TECOPARK announced that it would discontinue the free version after considering how to continue the series. Responding to players on June 3, the developer clarified: “When I used the term ‘free forever,’ I meant that it would never become a paid game.” It added: “I did not imply that we would continue to provide the game indefinitely.” The developer said it had reviewed download and paid-game purchase figures before deciding to suspend free distribution. TECOPARK’s Steam Community explanation also says players who had already downloaded the game could continue playing, including online.

ITmedia reported that Steam distribution was scheduled to stop at noon on June 15, 2026. The report attributed 10 million downloads to TECOPARK; that figure is the developer’s claim as reported by ITmedia, not an independently audited Steam statistic. The sources establish the announced discontinuation and scheduled date, but do not independently verify the live listing, so they cannot confirm whether new users can claim the game now.
