First, make sure you mean the 2009 game
“MW2” can mean either Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022). This guide covers the 2009 PC game, which Steam lists as including single-player: Steam Store: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009). If your game is the 2022 release, its troubleshooting guidance is different.

Record what happens before changing settings
The phrase “won’t launch” can describe several different failures. Before troubleshooting, note your Windows version, where you launch the game, and what you see after selecting Single-player or pressing Play.

- Nothing happens: Steam or the launcher does not visibly open the game.
- It starts, then closes: a process appears briefly and exits.
- A black screen or crash appears: note whether the game remains open, closes, or becomes unresponsive.
- An error appears: copy the exact wording rather than paraphrasing it.
These details are needed to narrow the cause; the title alone does not identify one.

For a Steam copy, check the game files
- Open the game’s Steam Support page. Use the official Steam Support page for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) to reach the available help workflow.
- Verify the installation through Steam. In your Steam Library, open the game’s Properties and use the installed-files option to verify the integrity of the game files. Steam will check the local installation and may replace files it finds damaged or missing.
- Try launching Single-player again. Record whether the behavior changed, including any new message or error.
File verification is a sensible, low-risk diagnostic step for a Steam installation, not a confirmed fix for every issue with this 2009 game. If you have a non-Steam edition, Steam’s file-checking workflow does not apply.
Do not apply the 2022 game’s requirements to the 2009 release
Activision’s surfaced Modern Warfare II PC Troubleshooting article covers the 2022 game. Its listed Windows support, driver recommendations, antivirus guidance, clean-boot advice, and notes about interfering utilities are not established here as requirements or fixes for Modern Warfare 2 (2009).

The Steam Support page for the 2009 game also displays a Steam Client policy: “Starting January 1st, 2024, the Steam Client will only support Windows 10 and later versions.” That is a policy about the Steam client, not proof of the 2009 game’s compatibility status on a particular PC.

Use the official support route on the game’s Steam Support page and include the facts that help distinguish the failure:

- Your Windows version.
- Whether clicking Play does nothing, the game starts and exits, a black screen appears, or a crash occurs.
- The exact error text, if one appears, and whether verifying files changed anything.
A Steam Community discussion titled “The game won’t launch. (Steam / Windows 11)” is an individual report, not confirmation of a general Windows 11 fix. Its mention of a third-party launcher should not be treated as the default solution.
