Yes—but the resurgence was on Steam, and it did not last. SteamCharts recorded an average of 11,252.52 concurrent players for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in March 2026, then a monthly average of 1,336.77 in September. The March spike coincided with a steep Steam Spring Sale discount reported at $5.99 in the US; the available figures do not establish a similar rise on consoles or Battle.net.
Which Modern Warfare saw the resurgence?
The figures concern Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the 2019 reboot—not the 2007 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, its remaster, or the later Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III. The reported player-count jump was measured on Steam.
How large was the March 2026 Steam spike?
SteamCharts lists a March 2026 monthly average of 11,252.52 concurrent players, up 1,456.21% from February, and a March peak of 61,453. These are Steam concurrent-player measurements, not unique players, sales, or total players across all platforms. SteamCharts’ Modern Warfare page provides the monthly series.
Contemporary reports gave different peak readings: Windows Central’s March 21, 2026 update cited 53,410, while TechRadar reported 61,667 from SteamDB on March 23. SteamCharts lists 61,453. Because these are source-specific figures taken at different times or from different trackers, they should not be combined into one definitive reading. Windows Central and TechRadar reported the spike as it unfolded.

Why did players return?
The most concrete explanation is the Steam Spring Sale. Windows Central reported a US price of $5.99, and TechRadar described a 90% discount, listing $5.99 in the US, £4.99 in the UK, and AU$9.59 in Australia on March 23, 2026. Those are historical sale prices, not current offers. The timing and discount were identified by both outlets as the likely driver of the surge.
Windows Central also raised anticipation around a future Modern Warfare release as a possibility, but did not establish it as a cause. The sale is the explanation supported by contemporaneous reporting; a sequel-related effect remains speculation.

Did the surge last?
No—not at the March level. SteamCharts’ monthly averages show a steep decline after the sale, with a small increase in September:
| Month in 2026 | Average concurrent players on Steam |
|---|---|
| March | 11,252.52 |
| April | 6,462.18 |
| May | 2,676.25 |
| June | 1,877.47 |
| July | 1,479.75 |
| August | 1,120.47 |
| September | 1,336.77 |
These are monthly averages of concurrent Steam players, as listed by SteamCharts. They indicate a substantial retreat from March, not that the game became inactive.

Does this mean Modern Warfare revived on consoles too?
The Steam figures cannot answer that. They do not track PlayStation, Xbox, or Battle.net activity, and the reviewed reports provide no corresponding counts for those platforms. Activision’s 2019 announcement lists PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC as release platforms, but its launch-era information does not establish player activity in 2026. Activision’s December 2019 announcement also reported more than $1 billion in worldwide sell-through and, for the game’s first 50 days, more than 500 million multiplayer hours and nearly 300 million matches—historical launch context, not evidence about the later spike.
