The “Unable to access online services” or “Connection Failed” message in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare can stem from a service-side issue or a local connection or game-session problem. Check official service information first, then try the low-risk steps below; the message alone does not identify the cause.
1. Check whether services are available
Before changing network settings, check Activision Support and the service-status page for your gaming platform. Activision’s support portal lists Modern Warfare, but that page does not by itself confirm whether servers are currently online. If either service reports an incident, wait for it to clear and try again rather than making disruptive changes to your setup.
If status information shows no incident, that still does not rule out an account, regional, platform-specific, or intermittent service problem. Use the checks below to narrow down whether the issue appears local.
2. Reload the game from its launcher
A passage reproduced in an FTC filing from Modern Warfare-related support or manual text says this message can happen occasionally and advises reloading the game from the launcher without closing the current game session. The passage does not establish that the advice applies to every current platform or game version.

- Leave the current game session open.

- Try connecting again after the reload.
See the FTC filing containing the reproduced passage.
3. Restart and test the local connection
If reloading does not help and services appear available, restart the game and your device, then try connecting again. Check whether other online services work on the same device and network. If they also fail, the problem may be with the connection or platform rather than Modern Warfare alone.

Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If you normally play over Wi-Fi, temporarily connect the device to the router with Ethernet and retry. A wired comparison is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix: it may help identify a Wi-Fi or local-network problem, but it cannot resolve an Activision-side outage or an account issue. The wired-connection suggestion also appears in The Droid Guy’s guide to this error.
If you do not have an Ethernet cable, you can skip this test. Avoid buying replacement hardware or changing DNS or port-forwarding settings based only on this message; the available sources do not establish those as universal fixes.
