If Call of Duty asks you to reinstall packs or add-ons after a PS4 or PS5 restart, first check whether the specific content is installed, still downloading, and available to the account you are using. The prompt does not necessarily mean the whole game needs reinstalling. Sony and Activision provide general troubleshooting steps, but their published guidance does not identify one cause that explains every recurring pack prompt.
Start by identifying the prompt and the content
Before changing anything, note the exact Call of Duty title, whether you are playing its PS4 or PS5 version, and the prompt’s wording. Pack names and content menus can differ by game and version, so do not assume every title organizes add-ons the same way. Activision’s Black Ops 6 installation and setup guide, for example, applies to that specific game.
Look for the affected pack in the game’s add-on or content-management area, then check the console’s downloads or queue. Confirm whether it is installed or still pending. On PS5, Sony’s path is Game Library > Your Collection > select the game > Add-Ons. On PS4, open Library > Purchased, select the game, then choose PlayStation Store > Your Add-Ons. Sony’s add-on troubleshooting guide describes these paths.
Check that the add-on belongs to the account and game version
If the pack is missing or the console treats it as unavailable, verify that you are using the account that owns it and check the purchase in transaction history. Also confirm that the add-on matches the installed Call of Duty edition or version. For a disc game, Sony advises checking that the disc’s region matches the account region; keep the disc inserted when the game requires it.

Try low-impact fixes before reinstalling
- Restart the console. After it starts, check the game’s content list and download queue again to see whether the pack is recognized or still pending.
- Restore licenses. Use the console’s Restore Licenses option, then reopen Call of Duty and check the affected add-on. Sony includes this in its general add-on troubleshooting guidance: PlayStation add-on and DLC support.
- If a PS5 add-on says “Waiting to install,” check available storage and the network connection. Sony recommends checking both when an add-on is stuck at that status. Freeing space or resolving a connection issue may allow the queued installation to proceed.
Reinstall only the affected content if the checks fail
If the right account owns the add-on, the content is compatible, and the console still does not recognize it after the checks above, Sony’s guidance allows deleting and reinstalling the game and add-on. This can take time and bandwidth, so first establish which item is affected; do not assume the full game must be removed when the prompt names only a pack. Follow the console’s available game and add-on management options, then reinstall the affected content from the library or store.
Use cache steps cautiously
Activision documents separate cache-clearing procedures for PS5 and PS4 in its guide to deleting old files from PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. For PS5, its instructions include clearing the system software cache; for PS4, they include fully powering off the console. These are general maintenance steps, not a confirmed fix for Call of Duty repeatedly requesting packs after restart.

Do not make deleting saved game data a routine troubleshooting step. Activision warns that deleting it is permanent and recommends backing it up first. Cache clearing and saved-data deletion are different actions; if a menu or guide appears to ask you to remove save data, stop and confirm exactly what is selected before proceeding.

A recurring request could be associated with a pending or incomplete download, an entitlement or license check, or how the console recognizes installed content. Those are possibilities, not official diagnoses for this symptom. The PlayStation and Activision support material cited here offers general download, entitlement, update, and cache guidance; it does not confirm a universal defect or root cause behind every repeat prompt.
